Season 25 Friday Trophy - Rounds 3 & 4 - Kyalami

Again we race South Africa, Kyalami. Classic track, long time home of formula 1 in the Southern hemisphere.

The original, sweeping circuit was in use from 1961 until political sanctions eliminated the Grand Prix after the 1985 race. A very quick circuit, it yielded some memorable races. Gilles Villeneuve outfoxed team mate and home driver Jody Scheckter in a wet/dry race in 1979, and Alain Prost raced from the back to win in 1982. By the time the circuit held its last Grand Prix in its original incarnation cars were lapping the track in 1m 02s – 20 seconds faster than in 1967, a lap time in the 1m 02s might not quite be obtainable.

PLEASE READ THIS. IT EXPLAINS THE FORMAT THAT THIS 20 RACE SERIES WILL USE.

Please refer to the list of tracks on the "Announcements" page for the Friday Trophy.

This is really designed to be a fun series with 4 different car mods running 2 sprint length races each Friday.
The first week will be F2's and 69x cars and the second week will be GT's and Can Ams.
In each category there is a choice of 4 cars for drivers from the Heavy brigade, but the Lights will be limited to a choice of 2 cars. ( see the list below)

The first race at each circuit on the schedule will always be F2 so that makes it easier to learn the track and the first qually session will start at approx 20:45 for 20mins. Race starts at approx 21:05
The second race will be for 69x cars with another 20minute qually and a 25 minute race.

The following Friday we will do the same again but with GT's and Can Ams on the same track.

There is a single S/R allowed and you DO NOT need to perform a Stop and Go. It would be nice if those who cause an accident allow the innocent victims to regain their position when you rejoin the racing.

These cars are for the first half of the season including the races at MOON. There will be different sets of cars for the second half of the season.

So, the last 2 cars are for the Lights and the Heavies can chose any car from the list of 4 if they wish. Please be honest and choose a car that suits your ability. The aim is to have some very close racing.

Cars for F2            Brab BT23 and Lotus,               Cooper and Ferrari

Cars for 69X          Lotus 49b and Matra MS80        Mclaren M9A and BRM P126/139

Cars for GT           Chap 2F Porsche 910                Mirage M1 and Ford Mk2B

Cars for Can Am     Mclaren M8D and Lola 260         Porsche 917/10 and Ferrari 712M

If it proves that the handicap for the lights is too harsh in any of the categories, I might consider changing the cars, but let us wait and see how things work out. I suspect that the Lights will still be quick.

*** NOTE***
Ensure that you have the pit wall in place. Those without the pit wall will risk disqualification. Advantage can be gained without it and in particular, drivers should ensure that they know where the pit entry is WITH THE PIT WALL IN PLACE

I can't make this race and am quite disappointed- I think the Friday trophy could be the jewel in the calendar.

Tried to, but just too effin' hot to race here right now (32C in the shade, about 85% humidity, ~35C in room where computer is), sweat dripping into eyes and making wheel slippery.

Meaning to lengthen gearing before race, but realizing (sitting on grid) that I'd actually shortened it, doesn't help. Tongue

Not quite that hot where I was DL , but only by a couple of degrees. All I will say about what I am NOT wearing is   " that it is a good thing that we do not use webcams or Skype" Roll Eyes

Maybe the hot weather plus beer and BBQ's distracted many others this evening and I cannot really criticise them, because a cold beer sounds just about perfect right now. Grin

I confess that I was struggling with the Mirage in Gt's, just could not find a stable setup and ended up fighting the car for the whole race. I think I may be able to claim a new world record for Kyalami for having the hottest rear tyres ever!! I did not know that GPL even recorded those sorts of temps lol!!

The Can Ams were the total opposite for me and right at the end of qually a small adjustment to my setup transformed the Porsche and I squeezed in a pole lap on race fuel....always a good omen  Wink The car felt solid and planted and as long as did not try any demon late braking and got the nose hooked up, I found I could pour on the power and really max out my corner exit speeds.
Sergio was keeping me honest in the Fezza until I think he had a small wobble and the gap suddenly grew to a comfortable size  and I was able to relax a little for the last 8 laps

I hope we get a few more drivers at Effex for the F2's, which should be just about the perfect car/circuit match I think.  Grin

Practiced for the Can Am part in the McLaren. Found it wasn't one of the choices - d'oh. The McLaren that was available was horrid so I swapped to the Porsche. Very nice. Although I was last I sould comfortably lap in the 1:18s which was at least respectable. Halfway through though the heat got too much and I got REALLY nauseous. Happens to me sometimes but usually when I am doing the 'Ring.

Fun series.

Yeah, great FUN tonight!

I would have won every "wet T-shirt" contest  Grin
Same here, sweat running in the eyes and glasses... (32°C)

But I had a perfect Mirage setup in the GT's that made it easy to drive and after Sergio had a wobble took the lead til the end  Wink

For the CanAms I was allready done, so I made some mistakes and only when Ray had a moment I could pass him and had some adrenaline that gave me more speed...

Looking forward to Effex, one of my favourite fun tracks  Tongue

I hate the GT cars love the Can Am cars but BOTH races were great fun despite the low turn out. Thanks again to all who participated and grats to the podiums.

It is just the original Papy track!

If you don't have it, it is patched...

I remembered there was a useful tip last season on how to easily re-instate the wall.   I guess just be careful out there Smiley
Taken from: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11624#event3503

don't forget you need the pitwall , If you have installed a GFX update that removes the pitwall here is how to get it back for the race;

1. Rename or remove kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
That will give you back a wall you can crash your car into , if you want the old papy Armco GFX back for the wall do this;
2. Rename or remove Armco_s.mip

Cheers,
Dave.
