Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
A flag to flag victory for Maarten in his Cooper having been pushed all the way by Bartosz in a Lotus. After qualifying sixth on the grid, Clive drove a great race to take the final podium place.

Server replay time: 0h00m01s

Lap 1 - Start Line - Maarten Steverink
Maarten swaps chassis in practice from the Ferrari to the Cooper after having set a qualifying time in the Ferrari. This is against the rules but given that Maarten is new to UKGPL it would be petulant to penalise him on this occasion. However, any future transgressions of this rule will be penalised.

All drivers are reminded to read both the general rules on the UKGPL web site and the division specific rules accessible via the championship tables pages.

  • Maarten Steverinkadvice — Read the rules on the website and Championship Table page.

Server replay time: 0h11m33s

Lap 8 - Tarzanbocht - Natan Veksler and Doni Yourth
Doni has the outside line on the run down to Tarzanbocht and is a fraction ahead as the drivers approach the braking zone. Natan locks his rear wheels under braking and isn't quite as good as Doni at slowing down the Cooper. Doni extends his advantage as they approach turn-in and he stays wide to give Natan room. Natan needs all the space he can get in order to get his car down to a slow enough speed to make the corner. As Natan turns in on the racing line, Doni is slightly ahead and at least six feet away but warp contact is made and Doni is knocked off the track.

Although the server replay clearly shows Doni is knocked off by warp contact, it is also apparent that Natan was struggling to slow his car and his trajectory took him over the tarmac that had been occupied by Doni's car. If warp had not occurred Natan would almost certainly have hit Doni anyway. However it is very difficult to be absolutely sure. What is certain is that Natan did not hug the kerb on the inside of the corner, he ran wide.

At this level, drivers should have the skill and race craft to race in close company with other cars whilst maintaining an inside or outside line. Warp can always intervene and there is no guarantee that Doni would not have been affected by warp even if Natan had maintained a position very close to the inside kerb. If that had been the case then Natan would be totally exonerated but the fact that he ran wide means that Natan should shoulder some of the responsibility for the incident.

Server replay time: 0h51m57s

Lap 35 - Finish line - Arf Arf Arf
Arf was warping badly on lap 2 and was dropped from the server lap counter. However he did finish the race distance 58 seconds behind the race winner. His fourth place position has been reinstated.

Season 25 Works Trophy, Round 3, Zandvoort

Welcome to the third round in the premier division of the premier class in UKGPL for the continuation of our twenty fifth season.  After a copule of rounds in the southern hemisphere, this round marks the start of the European season with a visit to Zandvoort in the Netherlands.

The circuit was inaugurated on August 7, 1948 and has been through several changes but unlike many of the popular 1960s tracks it has continued to be used for top flight racing and is in regular use today but not for Formula 1.  The last Formula 1 race a Zandvoort was held in 1985 and was won by Niki Lauda ahead of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.  The 1967 Formula 1 Grand Prix saw the debut of the Ford Cosworth DFV engine, in Jim Clark and Graham Hill's Lotuses.  Jim Clark went on to win the race and post the fastest lap after Graham Hill retired with engine problems after starting the race from pole position.

As always, we will run Pro Damage, so resets are not allowed.

Race List = IGOR

Replays Available here

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to Hondenvlak. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I did register for this series in the Announcement thread (at least according to the forum I did) but I can't see the password? Would like to do this one and at least make (another) attempt at a season's participation.

Weird night. Was it just me or was there massive warp this evening?

I was confused in qually as my results told me that Maarten had set times in both a Cooper and a Ferrari. I was getting big warp and the occaisional judder through my wheel when the 'S' bar hit the bottom. Disconnecting and reconnecting didn't improve the connection quality.

In the race I stopped getting accurate position information after about lap 2 or so. I've had this before, the server had stopped recognising me. As such I'd just like to make it clear that I finihsed 4th tonight, as I took the flag 5 seconds ahead of Fulvio. The in-game results didn't say this, putting me -1 lap.

I had a great battle with Fulvio....and another car earlier on. The Coop was on fire, and I knew before the race that the small improvement in lap time i could get from the Fezzer or Brabby wasn't worth the tokens. Happy with 6th on grid, and just as happy with 4th in the race.

Grats to Maarten on a dominant win and to Bart for rescuing his 2nd spot  Grin.

I was undecided about taking the Brabham or the Eagle, but opted for the safer Brabham and saved my tokens ( not sure what for, but I saved them anyway lol!!).
Qually was very tight and Maarten showed his potential by taking pole twice ?? Incidentally, I think there is a rule that a driver cannot change his car once he has posted a lap time in qually?? but as Maarten is relatively new to UKGPL he may not have known this. I think he might still have been too quick for us to catch anyway.

I have been struggling with either my 67 setups or my driving lately as I seem to be able to lap quite quickly, but the moment I try and squeeze that extra bit of pace my tyres go into instant meltdown!! which was the case around Zandvoort last night. Normally I could lap the famous Wazamobile at these sorts of laptimes without burning up the rears, but the Brabham would push them from 250 degF to 350 deg F in half a lap if I tried to push.
So although I picked up a couple of easy places early in the race..the only real pass was on Fulvio into Tarzan Wink I could see Bart ahead but dare not drive any faster. Then he made a few errors and I was on his tail but could not get past as his Lotus had the speed on the straight to drag him clear.
Then he ran wide and I was through with only about 8 laps to go, but I just could not go any faster and he reeled me in and passed easily on the straight. Even my half hearted attempt to up my pace cost me super hot tyres and I had to surrender 2nd place without a fight.
On the last lap I thought I would try just one more time to get at Bart...late braking into Tarzan and closing up but before I could even get close my rear tyres refused to grip and I almost went off and that allowed bart to escape. I succeeded in actually going off track only a few corners later but avoided anything nasty and just cruised to the finish afterwards, happy to have held on to 3rd spot.

Get me hanging out in the Works area!  Don't worry, I'm leaving again now.

I'm not an official,  but I knew I'd seen this somewhere - and as you asked Smiley
Just pasting here,  as this may well help others.

From the Sporting regulations: https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/sporting
"Once the driver has entered the server their car choice is made. They may not exit and change car after they have joined the server. The only exception to this is if WinVROC or the driver accidentally selects the wrong car. In this case they must exit immediately (without driving any laps) and change to the correct car.
Any driver who sets a time and then changes car will be penalized. Please see the Penalty Guidelines for more details."

The penalty: https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/contravene_sporting
Ranging from a caution/2-place penalty/3-place penalty/exclusion.

Y'see - so I'm not trying to stick a dagger in;  as maybe a caution/or place penalty/or exclusion or something else.  But that is for the moderators of course!

Cheers,
Dave.

My, my...  What a fluke!  Maarten wins at Zandvoort.

 Grin

Not bloody likely is it a fluke!  Maarten and I go way back in our days with the Average Drivers Club and to see MS rip around the dunes here, making the rest of us look rather sedated by comparison, is SOP.  Standard Operating Procedure.  And to rub it in, he does it in a Cooper.  (Apparently, he wasn't satisfied with the Ferrari)

Congratulations on a stunner of a drive, Maarten!  That surprises me not one whit.  Well done, amigo.

Fine jobs by both Bart & Clive to score the P2 & P3 slots, respectively.

I had a fine drive going even if it wasn't on the pace.  I find Zandvoort very tiring with all the switchbacks so paced myself for the 35 laps.  As well, in the latter laps, my vision was acting up a bit with things getting just a little on the fuzzy side here and there.  The zebra kerbs that I have in my folder tend to blend in with other textures and it makes for hard placement.  Must swap them out for something more eyeball friendly some day.

I had some fine duels going with Natan and Deaner.  A early collision with Natan set me back quite far but I was able to pick up the pace enough to close on Natan in the dying laps.  Just when it looked like I was close enough to stage a slipstream pass on the home straight, the back end stepped out coming off the last corner and I stuck the Cooper hard into the fence.  And stuck is right word.  Couldn't move so much as in inch.  A possible P7 up the spout.  Sigh...

Thanks for sticking up for me there, Donnie Smiley I was VERY satisfied with the Ferrari, and i didn't want to be too fast (that sounds arrogant, but i just know Zandvoort very well), and chose the Cooper to get into some good fights. Next time i'll just stay with the Ferrari then?

It was a long time ago since i touched GPL, and i wasn't sure how fast i would be. The last race was VERY short with UKGPL at Adelaide, when i was rear ended at the start ( no ones fault btw Smiley) This time i started practice on the day of the race, and hit a 1:23,5 with the Ferrari. I wasn't sure how fast the rest would be, so i started qualy with the Ferrari. Did 3 laps, and set pole. I then left the server with 35 minutes to go, as i wasn't registered as a regular driver, to let the regulars join. I rejoined with 10 minutes to go with the Cooper, got a Kyalami setup, and did 4 or 5 laps, and i JUST got pole.

Start was great, no real problems, and i could drive my own race after that. Was trying not to go for the 24's and CRASH heavily, so i was just trying to be consistent, which was quite a challenge after so long without GPL. 67's are pretty hard to start with anyway hehe.

Anyway, sorry if i bothered anyone with changing chassis. I could care less about the points and the championship. If i cared about that, i would have taken the Ferrari wouldn't I. All i care about is some good racing.

Thanks for racing everyone!
Congrats to the 2nd and 3rd place, and to all the finishers!

Maarten

You are absolutely right Dave and the standard penalty for setting two competetive qualification times is 2 places BUT the rules are designed to stop someone gaining an advantage through chassis swapping and in no way can swapping the Ferrari for the Cooper be seen as 'gaining an advantage'.

Interesting race last night. Smiley
I had difficult in qually to run a fast lap, but right at the end I did a very clean lap and went under 1' 26".
At the start I contended T1 inside to Jethro, but he went wide. Too bad, I didn't want to force a pass there. Then I had soon Clive on my tail and let him by when he came inside at T1 at lap 2, I knew he was faster. When Sky had an off at last but one turn Clive passed by and I had some battle with Sky till my tires get hot and had to calm down. So I had Arf on my tail that I guessed had been lost by the server so I pushed again to maintain a gap, but tires get hot again and I went wide before Tunnel Host having a nice trip on the dunes and rejoining the track with a lot of luck without big damage and facing the wrong direction. In the meantime I rejoined the track Arf and Andy passed by and I barely managed to stay ahead of Ronnie. In a couple of laps I was on Andy tail, but he had a moment at last turn so I had to force a pass inside to not risk a spin myself braking. At 3 laps to go I had almost an heart attack when DLogan did a 180° in the middle of the last turn to rejoin the track after a spin right when I was coming, so I had to ride the inside curb swearing at him  Grin
So I can state that Arf ended 4th ahead of me.

Aha. I did wonder why I caught you, but then you just seemed to wake up and make a comfortable gap for yourself.....at one point I was actually wondering if you could even see me, given the problems I've mentioned. You managed to get the post spin gap between us down from c. 15 secs to 7 at the end. I helped a bit by developing a total inability to downshift properly at the end of the straight, and thought I'd end up on the banking at Tarzan. Was getting a little worried that it might end up costing me a place.....
