Season 25 Novices and Intermediates Trophy - Round 3 - Monaco

NB. There is ONE grid for both the Novices and the Intermediates

The Novices and Intermediate Trophies will remain sharing a grid until further notice.

Welcome to the thirdd round in the 65's class of UKGPL for the continuation of our twenty fifth season. Monaco. Papy original, classic track, a real driver's circuit. Really hard!

Hopefully there will be a better turn out than last time before the summer break.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_T7_2
IP address = 62.149.202.168
Race date = 30-07-2013
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying Time = Between 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time
Track = Monaco (Papy)
Variant = 65F1 - the 2.02 Release of the 65mod should be used
Damage Model = INT
Race length = 50 minutes (laps 27)
Password: see above
Replays Available here

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here

Driver lists can be found on the Novice and Intermediate championship standings pages.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Intermediate drivers are limited to ONE reset. Novices have unlimited resets but EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

All drivers have a free choice of car.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the exit of the Gazometres hairpin. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Hello fellow sim-racers,
I am new to the UKGPL, and I would like to race at Monaco. Hopefully all goes well.
Thanks,

I've not managed a single clean lap so my expectations for this race is not high. Seems a tough one for Novices IMO.

Hi Tony, it's a challenging race track, but it does reward you once you have learnt it. Keep at it and you'll get there.

I really enjoy this track because it's a challenge, not saying I ever do well here, but it's certainly one that I enjoy.

It IS tough Tony but steady will reap reqards and I picked it because it is a Papy track and a classic circuit. If you CAN get round it is so much more rewarding than, say, Watkins Glen. Not everyone's cup of tea I know but with ten races hopefully there is enough to satisfy everybody.

At a tough track, it's a good idea to get on a pre-race Server.  The Ai don't behave exactly as real drivers do, and there's more to learn from us humanoids.  Most of us don't mind an occasional bump, if it helps to sort out what is safe, and what isn't safe for the race. smartass

(Was either last night or tonight!)

Thanks for the invitation though!

From the comments here opinions are divided about Monaco, but I have found that there is nothing to fear except over ambition.

Each corner requires that you approach it safely without any demon last minute braking, just concentrate on keeping all four wheels gripping and rolling, concentrate on smooth entry and best possible exit.

A quick resumee of my approach to Moanaco...

StDevote I slow slightly early ( rather than jump on the brakes and make the tyres lose traction) aiming to get a tight line through the apex and just miss the raised pavement on the inside up the hill. This line allows me to get on the gas early and max my speed up the hill.

Brake early and get the car hooked up to the long left hander into Casino Square. I set my cars up to oversteer slightly under power so that I can feed in some extra juice through the corner and keep well to the left. This will open the right hander and allow me to accelerate through that (without running wide into the armco).

I lift slightly over the "hump" to keep the car settled fpr braking into the right hand hairpin. I see this as a double apex, so I go tight to the kerb on the first apex, allowing the car to brake and turn to line up with the second apex and then nail the gas just clipping the curbs on either side down to the left hander.
This I approach as wide to the right as possible without fouling the kerb. Your gearing needs to be just right for this corner so that 1st does not bog down, but also that you do not spin up the rear wheels when you exit the corner. I try and take as late an apex as I can around this hairpin so that it straightens up the short down hill straight.

A bit tricky to describe my approach to the next corner and Portius.... I aim to do a slow drift through the apex of the first right hander with my inside wheel against the kerb allowing the camber of the road to take the tail round, then a squirt down to Portious keeping well to the left and looking for a late and tight apex. Here it takes practice to get the power on smoothly and use as much of the road as you can to max your exit speed which you will carry all the way to Tabac. I suggest that you even short shift slightly to avoid wheelspin towards the tunnel.

You should be taking the tunnel flat as you go up through the gears and getting across to the right as you approach the crest on the exit.
I aim my car at the gap in the chicane as I come over the crest and keep the gas nailed straight through. I only lift off the gas when the car has straightened to avoid spinning or losing the rear end.
Brake early for Tabac and aim for a smooth and fast exit rather than be tempted to demon brake!!
Build up as much speed as you can before braking for the final hairpin. Again, exit is more important than entry. Go in too fast and you will struggle to get the car turned and aimed along the S/F straight. Short shifting might also help reduce wheelspin out of this corner, where you want all the traction and acceleration that you can find.

Above all around Monaco you are fighting the track more that the other drivers...survival is evrything!!

At a tough track, it's a good idea to get on a pre-race Server.

A pre-race server....yeah, I remember them. Whatever happened to them?

I hosted a server last night from about 19:30 to approx 21:30 and no one joined Sad I did quite a few lonely laps.

I tried to join last night and received a bandwith mismatch error. This is not the first time for me to get this error. I looked it up on SRMZ just now, and it says that, "GPL reports a Bandwidth mismatch error when the server is sending more data than your GPL expects.
:hat-tip:

DO the following if you haven't:
1)Install a core.ini file in your gpl folder(find out who's got the 'hot' core ini nowadays,i still run alisons).
2)Download,and install the bandwith patch.(alters some lines in your new 'core.ini'.
This is what i did in 1999." (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=6523&hl=+bandwith%20+mismatch%20+error#entry62128)

Any advice is welcome, should I do a fresh install? Thanks, Walt

EDIT: I just ran the Bandwidth Patch, and found that the option for cars behind was not selected. I ran the patch again to make sure that one and two are applied. I'll try to test it and report back.
ReEdit: The problem is not solved. I received the Bandwith Mismatch error while trying to join the GPL Brasil server.   sweatdrop I think I'll try installing a second copy of GPL to see if I get the same error.
