Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
A race of attrition on a very challenging circuit. Ronnie Peterson kept his head to take the win from Bob Whitwell who looked to have the race in the bag until he made an unforced error at Cascades. Bob recovered to hold onto second place from Sam Blood. There were some very fast lap times set in qualifying and the race but as ever, steady consistent driving wins the day.

A very clean red zone with only one incident of note during the race.

Server replay time: 0h26m29s

Lap 15 - Dear Leap - Fulvio Policardi and Natan Veksler
Fulvio's engine explodes at Clay Hill but he decides to coast around the track in an effort to complete another lap. He keeps to the right as Bob, Ronnie and Sam fly past at racing speeds. As Fulvio exits Deer Leap his car is now crawling along at 11 mph but rather than pull off, Fulvio tries to get to the finish line. He moves over onto the racing line where he is hidden from the view of any approaching car. At this point Natan exits Deer Leap at racing speed and has no chance of avoiding Fulvio's car. A severe impact occurs and both Natan and Fulvio are out of the race.

Fulvio should have pulled off the track as soon as it was apparent that his engine trouble was terminal. Had it been the last lap some mitigation could be allowed but with more than half the race still to run there was little to be gained from freewheeling around the track. Natan did nothing wrong and had no chance of avoiding a car hidden over the crest of a rise that was practically stationary on the racing line.

Whilst there is no explicit rule addressing this issue, it is covered under Etiquette in the GPL Recommended Driver Behaviour. Specifically under the section entitled "Get off the track and out of the way ASAP if your car is non functional".

While others fell by the wayside I just tried to stay on track at a reasonable pace to keep Bob and Sam behind me. That was a scary 34 laps to survive and I was mighty relieved to see the chequered flag. Tough track this one as the signs are solid and unforgiving if you get too close. Grats to everyone who finished and commiserations to those who did not. See you next time at yet another unforgiving track, Montjuich!

So in qualifying I managed to get the Beast of Bourne slightly further up the grid than is due, and in the race I was harassing one of the Brabham crew (Dean?) that numbered 7 in that race, before I was a little distracted by a bunny chewing on something shiny and causing the flash in the corner of my eye (upon further inspection and throwing the object at said rabbit it turned out to be a cereal box from that well known corn-based manufacturer). That took my eye off the corner after Island bend and made the Beast unleash full fury against the invisible barriers that number a-plenty at Oulton. Shame, as I was just trying to keep it mainly on the black stuff and pick up from those that fell off. Ah well, yet another DNF...  Undecided

Grats to Ronnie, who appears to be more consistent as races go on!

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10. Why the hell do I keep crashing then?!

Nice race and battle with Andy L.
When the leaders overlapped us, Andy made a mistake and I could overtake him for the 4th position.
Unfortunately at 9 laps of the end, I lost my concentration and waste almost 50 seconds !

If you look at the championship, the first 5 drivers are the first 5 drivers of this race !

Surprised to make it to the end of this one, but at the same time annoyed to hand another race away.  After seeing the qualifying times of the first two I didn't expect much from the race, but around half distance I found myself in the lead having only overtaken Sam.  Ray was keeping me honest though and with around 8 to go I got my braking wrong into cascades and went off letting him by.  He had a small lead that I thought I'd be able to claw back, but after setting my FL I then had another couple of moments and settled for 2nd.

I acknowledge the track was tough but I was surprised to see so few finishers, only 5 out of 14 running at the end.  WD to all finishers, commiserations to my teamie Arf, a first lap engine failure when seemingly treating the car well.

See you in Montjuich, far from my fav circuit.
