Maybe strap Mabel to the front of the car holding a couple of torches?  Would add some downforce too.

Well, spicing things up is very apt as I will be out celebrating a friend's 50th at the local curry house (via the local beer house of course). Hoping to remain upright for most of the evening  Smiley

Sorry folks problem when Roguk joined my screen showed Roger joining but just pulsed with green hue.  Had difficulty even to shut it down using device manager.  Had to turn off computer and reboot.  Runs OK off line but when I go on line all's well until I get to Roger loading when it all goes tits up again. Roll Eyes Huh

Results now posted but we are experiencing technical difficulties so the replay will be added later.

Very sorry that we lost Bill & Postal  Sad

Bill, I had a similar problem in the previous race, just with wheelgonekid.  When he joined, I got the flashing screen and unresponsive GTL.  I had to shut down and restart GTL a few times, but somehow it worked out in the end.  You shouldn't have to restart the entire computer though - you can Alt-Tab out of GTL and then shut it down from task manager; that should save you a lot of time, if it happens again.

Postal, was yelling for you to join the grid at the start.  Had truly wished for you to get a good result this time  Sad

My own race; had a hard time motivating myself for this one, after last week's disastrous end to the race.  Didn't try all the cars like in previous races, but just picked the 2nd fastest for me at Sepang, which was the 911.

Couldn't match my offline pb in qualy, but it wouldn't have moved me up the grid anyhow, so didn't matter.  Was 3rd - or 2nd with Postal's untimely exit. At the start Clive streaked ahead, but went wide at T1, so I could pass him. Roger got the drop on both of us though, taking the lead.  After a few corners, he went off and I slid into 1st.  Lasted a couple of laps, with Clive reeling me in.  I then went a bit wide at the infield, lefthand tightening hairpin, momentarily putting a rear wheel onto a spot of sand.  No self-respecting 911 is going to miss such a golden opportunity for mugging its driver, and mine stayed true to form, promptly spinning.

Clive was gone, and Matt inched past in his Mini.  Was marvellously entertaining to see him at 90º sideways, on and off the track at most corners, but somehow still keeping it together.  I got back in front, but could follow his sideways antics in the mirror.  Then I had a big off, but miraculously managed to keep the nose pointing in the right direction, and ended up on the track, ready to continue.  Matt seemed to think he could better that, and went off in the opposite direction.  Looks rather amusing in the replay; around the 550-600 mark  Smiley

Race now seemed to settle for me.  Clive was 14-15 secs ahead and seemed totally in control. Whenever I managed a fast(er) lap, reducing the gap to maybe 13-14 secs, you could be dead certain that next lap, he would have increased it to 14-15 secs again.
Gap to 3rd kept increasing through the race, so I had no threats from behind.  With no realistic chance of catching Clive, all I could do was try to keep myself from screwing up - a major task in itself some will argue  Grin

Much surprised then to find Clive digging himself out of the sand early on lap 20, meaning I could snatch the lead.  All I had to do was keep it together for 3 more laps, and victory would be mine. What do you do then ?  Yep, start making mistakes..  Smiley - aided in no small part by that frenetic soundtrack of the Nissan; it's like being chased by the Tasmanian Devil.  Tony, do we have a rule against psychological warfare ?  Grin

On the penultimate lap, I unintentionally cut a corner too steeply, hitting a high curb.  911 rear end woke up, overjoyed at a new opportunity to get its driver, snapping the car round before I could react.  The language I used wasn't for children, I can tell you that, but strangely, Clive didn't come flying past.  I concluded that by an exceptional streak of luck, he must have gone off at the same time.  Puzzled to see him in the pits though, as I started on the final lap - didn't think there was anything to hit around the place where I lost him, so couldn't understand he had to retire.  The fact that things went eerily quiet at the time he disappeared, should have been a clue about him running out of fuel.  Bad luck Clive; you really had deserved the win!  Smiley

Main goal for me this race was to NOT bump anyone off.  Happy to have accomplished that - and much surprised to win the race too; couldn't really have hoped for that.

Edit; Bill: You may have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of an unresponsive GTL.  That should give you the blue Windows screen, from where you can start task manager and then shut down GTL.

Cheers,
Erling

Grats to Erling on the win. and commiserations to Postal and Bill with their technical problems.

I finally felt that I was getting the hang of these GTL saloons for this race, but it was through a process of much trial and error...mostly error!.
When Tony reported on the forum that a 2:26 lap was reasonable, I realised that my efforts in the Mini and the Porker off line were not going to offer any competition. I dragged the BMW out of the garage and tried the only setup that I had for that, and times improved to a 1:24 after several laps. I cannot explain why, but I felt that the BMW would be wasted here because, although the track had some develish sharp turns there were also some long straights. Plus the fact that bootloads of grunt would come in handy out of the slow corners...provided it was handled with respect  Roll Eyes.

So I tried the Commodore, but it just felt too big and clumsy. I had given the Nissan GTR a try at Melbourne and actually discarded it as an uncontrollable monster Undecided. maybe I have adapted my GPL driving to GTL over the past weeks, because at Sepang it suddenly did not feel quite so bad and a first flying lap of 2:26 suggested a great deal of promise.

I am still not fully at ease with the setup page in GTL and there were several abortive attempts at tweaking the handling to suit my needs, but eventually I tamed the rear end which I am sure has some DNA link to the Porsche that Erling was driving. Then the gears needed sorting and I went aggressive this time, using all the revs in all the gears. Gradually the confidence that the car would stick increased and with that the lap times started to drop until on Sunday P.M. I clocked a 2:21:05 on race fuel on what felt like a slow lap. I guess "slow" and "smooth" are easily confused.  Wink

Even though I had trimmed 5 secs off what Tony had suggested was respectable, I was certain that others would be 2-3 secs faster at least. Probably if Gold Top had made this race things would have been different.
I was quite enjoying the ding dong qually scrap with Postal and was just waiting for him to do a "proper" lap and put me in my place, so I was stunned to find myself on pole position........and scared of what was behind me.
It was fear that sent me scurrying off to T1 and miss my braking point. I was spitting nails when I found myself in the kitty litter and apologies for lurching back onto the track like I did  Undecided. It took a lap to get some warmth into the tyres and the speed at which I closed on Erling was worrying. Is he sandbagging? is Mabel hiding in his boot and weighing him down? and then he ran wide at the infamous T10 and did a nice 360 as I swept past, determined to take full advantage.
I pushed hard for about 5 laps until the gap was around 14 secs and then decided to play it cool and just manage the gap. each time Erling clipped a second off ( he was obviously trying hard back there!!) I tried to regain it on the next lap and the race progressed into the evening gloom ( I did eventually find the headlights, but it took a while !!).
I was even more impressed with the way the GTR did not eat its tyres, and I was happily doing 2:22's without apparently wearing any rubber away. So vanity got the better of me in the last few laps and I wondered if I could work a 2:20 lap out of the beast....bad move! I got on the gas too soon into T2 and got a rear wheel onto the outside kerb and around I went. Frantic starter button pressing and gear selection as Erling's Porker went past was not the fastest way out of that mess.
It may have been dark, but the red fog descended and I engaged my secret weapon....Mabel.  She popped her head out of the sunroof and began her rendition of "Flight of the Valkyries" which was free of all restrictions...like lyric, rhyme, key, corsets and most importantly volume.  It was not the Nissan power plant that Erling could hear, but Mabel's screeching vocals urging me on.

Just as I was getting within range to launch an attack on that hapless Porsche, and Mabel was winding up for an splitting crescendo and glorious finale...I ran out of fuel!!!

I must be reading the on screen info wrong as regards fuel, because I thought that I had plenty in hand. Can someone explain what I should be reading there? The display changes after each lap, I have one figure in brackets and one out of brackets, presumably showing the amount of fuel available to use per lap to reach race distance and the other showing what I actually used??  But I think I am reading these in reverse?

Grats to all finishers. I feel a little miffed that I did not get to taste the champagne, but equally happy that I found some pace at last. The golden rule is always "to finish first, first you have to finish"...and I didn't!!

Nice write ups guys  thumbup1

@ Clive XD can be set to show two sets of fuel figures or just stay showing one set. The options are 1) fuel used per lap followed by (in brackets) average fuel used per lap and, 2) No. of full laps attainable with current fuel load/use on current lap pace followed by (in brackets) No. of full laps attainable with current fuel load based on average of pace.

Think that's right  Huh

Find XD.ini in your main GTL folder and dabble with Notepad to change stuff.

Tricky to find circuits that suit the Ford Escort due to it's limited gearbox variations but I decided that this one would suit particularly as it just hit it's rev limit at the end of the long start/finish straight. Had a good start but unfortunately I gave WGK a love tap at T2 so had to wait for his recovery. This left me last but I was confident that over 22 laps I could make up some ground on the others. Eventualy caught and passed WGK after he had a small error and then set off to try and catch Roger who was someway up the road but just in sight. Roger was obviously having trouble with worn tyres as I was gradualy closing on him and by Lap 20 I was on his rear and waiting for a passing opportunity. However my tyres were also showing their age and I lost it at the entrance to the back straight and span onto the sand gifting the place to WGK. Still really enjoyable race and that darn circuit has grown on me.

China next time and although this track is another Tilke creation this has a great layout and one of the longest straights (0.86mile) in the F1 calendar.

Chortle

My race was a controlled crash most of the time, I don't get on with these cars at all. They all seem to suffer from
insane engine braking, lift off and shift down and they all spin at a whim.
I had set the mini with everything as hard as poss at the front and as soft as poss at the rear with the brake bias well
forward and still the mini would go sideways with very little encouragement. I like the idea of this mod, but the physics
is very badly done IMHO. It flicked round one corner entry too far and I quit. Enough masochism for one night.

Sorry to read your comments regarding the car choices Matt. Must say I've not experienced them in quite the same way as you describe. Could your in-game sensitivity settings need adjusting. I only say that because I had tampered with mine and found the Escort to be undriveable under heavy braking. Found that by reducing my setting for brake sensitivity the car became much more predictable under braking.

Could be Tony. I tried all the cars at Melbourne, and the only one I had a chance of getting round without losing it
under braking was the 911. Nothin new here, when GoldTop ran the RACE07 series I couldn't drive the Caterham for the same
braking issue, I don't get the same prob with the normal GTL or P&G cars, though some like the old Alfa-SA was horrid
but isn't any more. Other people's setups are often undriveable to me because of the braking so maybe my pedals are
set badly.
