Moderator's Report

A virtually clean race to finish of the season & nobody needed a Shift R. Quite an achievement in the sand traps at Zandvoort.

Server replay time: 0h01m09s

Piero loses control on the exit from Tarzan & spins. It is not clear if he spins back onto the track or rejoins. By taking a line down the middle of the track at slower speed than the following cars;
Martin Hunt realizes how slowly Piero is moving & brakes hard. He is also boxed in - no options right or left - & taps Piero slightly from behind. Piero appears unharmed but Martin spins off.
Billy moves left to steer around Piero & loses some speed with his outside tyres on the grass. Piero makes up the ground & makes a pass on Billy into Turn 2. Piero has a reasonable amount of overlap but the cars touch (or GPL says they touch). Billy spins off & Piero is, again, unharmed.
We will deal with this a Racing Incident but where drivers lose control in the red zone they should take additional care not to compromise other drivers until they are back to normal racing speed.

Thanks guys for letting me in the race. I've developed monitor(HDTV) problems. It's started freezing during races and I have to cut the power and turn it back on. I apologize to anybody I may have caused problems. It looks like I can't be racing online till I fix this. :-( This is the fourth time it's happened.

I'm hoping I can reproduce the problem offline and try to get it fixed soon.

A very tough race with some very fast times up front.  Had a close battle with David Rainier until I made a mistake and once I had lost the tow I couldn't stay with him.  Grats on the race and the Heavies championship David.  Also another win for Evil to cement his grip on the Lights Championship, grats Evil.

Greg this is mostly due to the energy saving settings of the graphics card software, as GPL is not recognized by Windoze as a 3D application!

Have watched the replay, went wide and loose in Tarzan in lap 3 and lost the lead. Then the car in front (Clive) was warping a bit for a few laps and (I) got distracted, looked like he went off at every corner with a lot of smoke (in the server replay it doesn't look that bad as on my screen/replay)...later I made another mistake going loose out of Tarzan and lost out on Roberto. Had a few runs on him in the race, but just couldn't pass. My last 2 laps were a bit messy and had to settle for third, which is OK though Smiley

Started with too much fuel, had 15 liters in the tank after finish, tweaked the setup before the race and overadjusted in hindsight (45/60/1 diff instead of 45/45/1). Just too loose for my driving/braking style. That's something I never should do again. Don't get me wrong, Clive and Roberto beat me on merit Wink Great racing though, was a blast, good win Clive and good job Roberto, well done finishers! Also a great job by the lapped cars giving room being so courteous! thumbup1

PS: Many congrats to Clive and Rainier for the F2 Trophies!

Cya'll next season, and a happy X-mas and a healthy 2014! Thanks Bill and Bad Blood for moderating/upping replay.

Qually..would anyone leaving the pits please have a look in their mirrors. Both this week and last I had flying laps ruined by gung-ho heroes trying for pole on their out lap....

The Race: Everyone seemed to get away safely, and I don't think we lost anyone at T1...although one of the leaders span coming out of it. Evil and the Roberts made some clear air immediately and left me and Natan chasing. We had a nice battle for a few laps, but something happened to him, and that left me in clear air - no hope of catching the front group, so I just concentrated on building a gap to Cookie, and then Rainier who were a fair way behind.

Only incident of note was the poor back marker who pulled over to let me by about 3/4 of the way through the race, who I then saw flying off the circuit in my mirrors. I hope you didn't suffer from warp contact, as we didn't appear to anywhere near each other...

Well done to Clive for the c'ship, thanks to Billy for moderating, and I'll see you all next year. Have a great break.

I had that exact problem when racing on my laptop. You might find a different resolution before you race fixes it. Forces the monitor out of 'native'.

As to the race - started nicely but I had mucked up the gearing so it was a matter of defend. Didn't take long to sink to the bottom... then had some fun 'racing' with Walt but made some silly mistakes. Gave up with ten to go as I was (am) feeling a bit rough.

Good series but I just CANNOT drive these F2s at any pace... Roll on S26 and Merry Xmas all.

There were 18 drivers on the server when I entered the IGOR chat room. I was ready to let someone else race in my place. I waited until the last minute, and joined the qually with 20 seconds to spare. I was very happy that I was able to race. I had very little practice. I used a set-up that I created for another track a while back. The racing action is a lot of fun, even in the back. I look forward to doing some more of these races next season. Thanks to the organizers, and good race everyone!

Thanks to Billy and to all those who competed in this series for making it as good as it was. Not just because i finished top, but because there were some great (close) races.

I was not anticipating a win here as Robert F's qually times were very quick and he had the Mercaldo brothers and Robert T up there as well!! As usual I did qually on race fuel, concentrating on getting good consistent lap times without melting any tyres, gradually shaving time off to get me a 4th spot on the grid.

The start was magic for me as the car in 3rd spot bogged down and I gained an instant place. On lap 2 Robert Teso overcooked it out of Tarzan and I was second and close enough to Robert F to use the draft. He defended the only overtaking spot, into Tarzan, on Lap 2 and I thought I was going to have a long frustrating race if I could not find a way past  Undecided
Lap 3 and I picked up the draft down the straight, but I knew I could not outbrake Robert around the outside so I tucked in and waited. I'm not sure if I distracted him but he ran just a little wide and left a gap on the inside. I did not need to be asked twice and I was through to take the lead.  Wink
The rest of the race was a case of managing the gap back to the car in 2nd spot ( Apologies for the "warping" during the first half of the race. I was aware that something was wrong, because my latency bar was at 100%  and I was waiting to be disco'd at any moment). Robert Teso got past RF at some point and a couple of messy laps by me allowed him to close up. I had to defend hard for a couple of laps before he made a small mistake and I got away again.
Although I finished 1st, it was never secure as I was never more than a couple of seconds ahead of the next car all through the race. One mistake and I would have been passed....very stressful, but that makes for a great race.  Grin

Thanks to all again and have a wonderful Christmas , see you all in the New Year.

My race was less successful than Evil's.  My 4-wheeled friend and I, suffered the aftermath of 2 incidents, on the 1st 2 laps of Zandvoorting.  The previous race start, I'd survived only 1 corner, so this time the GPL Gods were smiling, as much as having a giggle.

For a giggle, a frustrated spin put me last, and the race became a lonely and selfless defense from attack, for the leaders.  I made certain no slower drivers came by, to threaten the faster cars up front.

The lesson learnt from my 2 unsuccessful F2 outings is, there's ample incentive to start towards the front - you might actually get to do some proper racing!  Sad

Martin, I suspect some red mist may have played its part. We had a laugh about your first corner aggresiveness in the praccy race just before qually started. I'm afraid you are one of the people i referred to in my earlier post...you were so keen to leave the pits and beat the bloke leaving just in front of you that you overtook him in the run up to T1 and got in my way. I havent seen the race incidents you referred to, so you may have been genuinely unlucky, but maybe you need to calm down a tad???

On the bright side.....i had to check the replay to see who had blocked me. I usually know when you are in front of me cos you are flashing/warping so badly. Must be a good sign that you have got that sorted  Cheesy

Motor Racing Development press release 23/12/1967

Zandvoort, the Netherlands. With a brand new works development car the Motor Racing Development crew travelled overseas to join their new driver Robert Fleurke at his hometrack Circuit Park Zandvoort. With a re-build Cosworth-FVA engine and a freshly rebuilt FT200 gearbox, the Brabham BT23/2 could be the car to beat. The crew had to resticker the car with startnumber 10 and Fleurke's name on top of Sir Jack Brabham's name. After some private and open testing sessions and many setup changes, the car was consistently lapping in the 1m25s bracket on new Goodyear tires.

The MRD crew was impressed by Fleurke's technical feedback and outright speed, and had high hopes for the F2 Trophy race at Zandvoort. Nobody would deny Fleurke among the Italian macho's in their Tyrrell/SPC-Matra MS7's, the British limeys in their privateer BM-Brabham BT 23/1's, and the rest of the international field in Brabham's, Lotus, Matra's and McLaren's. Even French Mécanique Aviation Traction tried to defy MRD with their MS5 monster.

And in practise, Fleurke set pole position in only his third flying lap, with a time of 1m25.23s. P1, within a second of the trackrecord for F2 cars. The MRD crew was ecstatic. However later in practise, out of Hondenvlak, Fleurke wrecked his brand new chassis' being on a 1m24ish lap, and came until a stop just in front of Tunnel Oost. Arf Arf Arf -yes those are his first, middle and his last name- had to go outside Tunnel Oost and wrecked heavily writing off his expensive MS7. Happily Arf survived this encounter with the stone wall, but he was bruised up and very unhappy with newcomer Fleurke it was rumoured.

Being overconfident before the 27 laps race, Fleurke was not completely satisfied with the setup, and asked the crew to change the ramp angles in the differential and to rebuild the chassis. The MRD crew, suffering from a jetlag was not happy about that. Being tired they make a mistake filling up the fueltank with more than 50 liters of high octane leaded petrol and ramped up the angles on the coast side too much.

This race would prove to be a slipstream spectacle on the Huzaren Vlak, as passing on the twisting parts of the track is almost impossible without a mistake of the car in front.

The start went well and Fleurke maintains his lead out of the Tarzanbocht. Starting from second position, Piero Mercaldo oversteers out of Tarzan Bocht, and his chances of a win disappear like African snow in the Italian summer sun. Towards Hugenholtzbocht -named after the trackdesigner of Zandvoort and Suzuka- championshipleader Evil Clive -starting from fourth position- already closes up to Fleurke after a Donnerwetter Blitz-start. The rest of the field follows.

Clive gets a good draft on the Huzaren Vlak on Lap 2, but has to tuck in behind Fleurke, who is defending the inside line towards Tarzan Bocht. On Lap 3 Clive is able to pass Fleurke inside Tarzan Bocht, as Fleurke was watching his mirrors on the inside line. Fleurke goes wide and loose and has to let Evil Clive go. That was not part of the masterplan.

Due to electrical problems Fleurke is unable to follow Clive closely. Roberto Teso, in the blue Matra MS7 is closing in on Lap 9. The first car is being lapped on Lap 11, the Lotus 48 of Paul Whitfield. This is not what Colin Chapman likes to see. On Lap 12 the top 3 runners are almost running nose to tail. On Lap 13 Fleurke can't take the pressure of Teso anymore and oversteers out of Tarzanbocht into the grass. In the same lap Walter Conn is being lapped, the privateer Brabham driver responsible for stealing startnumber 2 from MRD. Here you see him being lapped by Fleurke just before the flat out taken Tunnel Oost.

On Lap 14 Teso -who holds the fastest lap of the race until then, an impressive 1m25.60s- is out for Clive's blood. Fleurke tries to hang on. On Lap 16 the many spectators on the Hoofdtribune see Teso closing in on Clive, Teso sets what will be the fastest lap of the race, a 1m25.40s. Fleurke seems to be dropped. On Lap 17, the same spectators see the unleashed Italian Teso trying to pass Clive outside in the Tarzan bocht, a feature that is almost impossible. The Latin blood is boiling it seems. On Lap 19, the wildly cheering spectators see Teso closing in at Clive's gearbox. The Tyrrell/SPC-Matra MS7's topspeed is superior to the Brabham's, thanks to it's aerodynamics, despite a wider front track. Fleurke seems to close in ever so slightly, being applauded and cheered on by his fellow landsmen. All this noise makes Fleurke pushing even more despite handling problems. At the end of Lap 19 Teso goes loose as a goose in Pulleveld ableing Fleurke to close up. Teso's blood might have been overcooked as he overcooks the corner on his Dunlops. He's probably a good Italian cook, but I digress. Clive has just lapped Billy Nobrakes, who'd better check his brakes towards Tarzanbocht. The Nr. 7 Brabham of Martin "Maddog" Hunt -not family of great upcoming talent James Hunt, yet coming from the same neighbourhood- is in front of Clive.

On Lap 20 Fleurke, being loose braking and off the gas, now goes loose on the gas towards Gerlachbocht, just when he has caught Teso. With Billy Nobrakes in front it seems both Fleurke and Teso have no brakes, but they can lap Billy, who gives plenty room in Hugenholtzbocht. Clive starts Lap 21, having lapped Maddog Hunt. Hunt, solely driving on his rearwheels, gets Teso and Fleurke soon in his mirrors. Just before Hunzerug he lets them by on the same lap. Clive is about 3 seconds in front of Teso and Fleurke managing his lead when his rivals are racing eachother.

Fleurke is pushing Teso in Hondenvlak and towards Panoramabocht, still on Lap 21. On Lap 22 both go side by side towards Tarzanbocht but Teso denies Fleurke. Clive starts Lap 25 with Teso and Fleurke behind him. On Lap 26 Fleurke desperately tries to upset Teso driving in his mirrors, but Teso does not make any mistake.

Evil Clive wins in the Nr.20 Blue Moose-Brabham BT23/1 cementing the 1967 F2 Light Trophy. He finishes 2.50s in front of second placed Roberto Teso in the Nr.17 Tyrrell/SPC-Matra MS7. Robert Fleurke rounds out the podium finishing 3.30s behind the winner. David Rainier cements the F2 Heavy Trophy. This trophy weighs more.

That is a truly amazing report Robert !  I feel I should be at a newsstand, putting down money for a copy.

Martin, I suspect some red mist may have played its part . . . .
A response is in order to Colin - I also noticed what happened at the start of practice.  An apology is due - sounds like you tangled more than once.  It was my first racing lap, and a sideways F2 scrubs speed.  Had the tyres gripped, I'd not have caused a problem, and allowed you through if you were faster.  This had nothing to do with pit exit speed.  The Zandvoort exit is safe.  Some tracks have unsafe exits, and I cringe to see some crawl into the racing line, where speed is needed.  Smiley

Pre-race practice - I'm of the opinion practice sessions should not be overly serious.  You learn more by experimenting.  There are some who believe every online moment is a desperate affair, in need of extreme seriousness.  If you are one, I'll avoid the Server you and your rapid Cohort use.

Calming down at race starts - I often make up places at race starts, and don't make a habit of causing pileups.  This is done by staying calm and concentrating.  I was interested to hear recently, this was a technique Jackie Stewart used, though with a tad more notoriety, and success.

Accident 1 at Zandy, was caused by a near stationary car in the middle of the track, which I pulled out to greet.  I'd cars to the left and right, but no time for that to matter.  Number 2  at notorious turn 1, a lap later, was caused by a car getting frightened by a spinner, and braking early.  I made a sacrificial spin to avoid contact.

I've now taken part in 3 F2 races, at the end of this Season .  I've witnessed 2 major pileups on lap one, been subject to 3 stationary moments not of my making, and before worthwhile racing could be done.  And now I'm accused of mental deficiency at the track.  Interesting times we live in!
