Moderator's Report

Only one incident of note in the Red Zone but it is T1 and affects about half the field!

Server replay time: 0h01m03s

Martin has made a storming start and is lining up for the first corner. Ahead, George is being cautious into Crowthorne which is understandable with a packed field and a tight line in your first online race.

Behind maddog has had a rabid attack and realises too late he is not going to stop in time and makes strenuous efforts to fall on his own sword. He misses and takes George out instead.

Martin is experienced enough to know that full blast on cold tyres and full tanks into a tightening T1 is not a recipe for Angel Food Cake!

Rules have this: "The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter had lost control on the approach to the braking zone and consequently braked later than intended." This is not a perfect fit as Martin just braked too late. The alternative is this: "The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever. The shunter was in full control." This is somewhere in between. I am minded to go with the lesser penalty as Red Zone attracts an additional one place penalty.

Behind mayhem is unleashed as various drivers react too well or too late or not at all.

It is ALWAYS worth being cautious into T1. There is OFTEN a crash midfield.

One last incident of note is that Adam turns into Billy slightly who has had to avoid Martin's spinning car. Adam would have been better advised to stay wide and take a slow line.

In the event of an incident ahead hold a line - stay wide or stay tight but try not to take a racing line.

Walter, Pierre and Gareth are caught up.

Server replay time: 0h01m14s

Mike gets a wheel on the grass exiting T2 and spins across the track. He miraculously avoids everybody.

Always take care when rejoining, especially when you have to join the racing line. Michael does so.

Server replay time: 0h10m34s

Martin runs very wide on the exit of the Jukskei Sweep and makes heavy contact with the banking. He throws up a lot of dust and slows appreciably. Badblood is several car lengths back and he can see the dust but doesn't back off. Martin bounces back onto the racing line and as the visibility clears Badblood has no time to take avoiding action and contact is made.

Having made the mistake, ideally Martin should have stayed on the grass until he was able to rejoin the track off the racing line. However he had to fight hard to maintain control of the car and the fact that it bounced back onto the racing line was unfortunate.

Badblood could see the dust flying and whilst he was not shown any yellow flags he should have been prepared to back off a little to give himself some room for manoeuvre. Having said that cars regularly kick up dust at this point and it wasn't obvious until it was too late that Martin had slowed quite as much as he had.

Neither driver can be held responsible for this incident but if Badblood had backed off slightly he would have probably given himself enough space drive around Martin and make a clean pass.

That was fairly horrible.
Started in the middle of the grid - Adam Cooper & I were slowing to avoid a spinning car in T1 - I think a warp contact threw us both out.
Lap 2 - by my replay - looked like an overly-agressive overtake from Maddog left me needing a reset.
I used the track update that Walter recommended - makes Kyalami look much more scenic. Whilst it does have the armco barrier along teh pit-lane it waas more of a mirage - the sort you can drive through. Will probably get a DQ.
Managed to put some reasonable laps together until near the end but put a wheel on the grass while Mr Cheesman's BRM was in hot pursuit (wall my fault). Rejoined after Mike Turner & though we might have a contest but a piston let go on the normally reliable Brabham. Game over.

Trouble personified, at the first corner, of the first race of a new Season, of Ukgpl-ing.  I shall expect the full force of Moderation, to fall upon my battered remnants.

The added excitement at the first corner, started near the back on the grid, where we were stretched all the way back, across the brow of the starting straight.  I was unable to see the stater from my lowly position, and already expected a lack-lustre start from my lack-lustre Cooper.  I was rather surprised to have easily passed 6 cars, before applying the brakes?  I came upon the next gaggle rather fast, and gave a clip round the rear, to an innocent entrant.

I made a bold inside move on Billy, while attempting to regain a spot or two.  The slightest warp was enough to delay us both more than slightly!  And a few laps later, to complete my sad tale, my gearbox was targeted by Paul, as calamity met with fate.  Undecided

That was fun. I got caught up at the t1 crash but no harm done, then spent the next 20 laps trying to fend off the advances of Mr T. I failed, and when the leaders came by I settled for 10th. Grats to Andy, Cookie and Hendy, look forward to the next one

That was a very difficult race !
I spent times during the week for training in Brands Hatch, because I registered with Works but I only understood I was declassified to Privateers 2 hours before the race.
Moreover, I could join the server only 10 minutes before the start.
Hopefully, Kyalami is a well known track ...but I had no tested setup for the Ferrari.
My setup was quite good for the qually and I get a nice 4th position but during the race I spun two times at the end of the long straight and then I need to brake earlier than I used to do.
I finished only 6th, disappointed as my objective was at least to keep my initial 4th position.

Now let's go to Snetterton.

Hey, Paul, I've just noticed !   Considering it is the first race under the 50% completion rule, you are showing a real aptitude for energy saving !  Grin

LOL. My engine let go going up the hill and I knew I needed to pass the S/F line to score. Rolled into the points at about 3 mph!

Unfortunately, I faced twice a situation I've never had in 4 years of racing online: My screen went black twice, the first time after a turn and the second time in the middle of the straight.

If any of you has an idea about the reason for black outs like that, I would welcome any advice .  I don't have a screen saver as far as I know (I don't want to say "as far as I can see"  laugh )
I've had this occur in the past - a black screen or loss of sound - and was caused by my forgetting to  tweak the power saving settings after re-installing Windows. This might be worth checking.
I had some initial difficulty joining the race via Multiplayer probably due to the numbers logging on. I wonder what has caused this welcome resurgence of interest in GPL. It might soon be necessary to resurrect the old Clubman division!
My race was marred by an early blown engine (plus a couple of unforced offs) but at least on this occasion that didn't mean a race devoid of other cars.

BTW GEtGames  currently have  F1 2013 on sale for £10. This includes some classic cars and a couple of Classic tracks  - Brands Hatch and  Juarez. Other classic bundles are also available.
It also has a commentary from Murray Walker. Takes me back to F1 97 on Playstation!

Ah the ferrari would have been the better choice, wouldn't it? Wink

Lotus was too unpredictable for me on such a deceptive track. Trying to pass on the straight for the first time I realized I had no idea where the brakepoint was on the right side of the track and went straight through T1, bumping into Cookie without damage to either of us (I think) before bouncing off the retaining wall.

LOL Hendy, it is these pesky strange tracks that none of us have seen before that causes the problem <ahem>.

Make sure you know the braking point for the two long straights at Snetterton or you might find your car airborne once or twice.

You are right on both matters, Michael !

- I removed My UPS before Christmas - the battery was dead - and I guess the software reset the Windows parameters when I uninstalled it . I was back to 15mn for the display with the PC plugged in. Thanks a lot.

- The resurgence of GPL is a fact. Over here, in Québec, the old gang of the defunct QGPL has restarted weekly meetings and as far as the F1Legends league is concerned, we're getting messages every week from people who quit years ago. Long live GPL !

Yes, the Fez seems much more stable under braking...
I saw you coming inside and just let you go (untouched!) just crossing my line some centimeters off my nose Grin

I was in a similar situation as David as I had to switch to Kya in last minute, so I choose the Braby with a reliable setup Wink
Andy was too fast and we both had some warp in the beginning, so my aim was to keep Hendy behind me, who supported me with some spins...
Great racing with fair behaviour of the lapped!

I turned up at 9pm for the Works Brands race and it wasn't on the iGOR list. I looked in here and found a message for me. To even up the grids the Works backmarkers would go in Privs. Works has has an influx of very fast drivers this season and possibly more than a gridful. It has been quite a thankless slog the last 3 seasons just trying to stay on to the end and pick up places due to attrition. I worked out that a hypothetical driver that finished all the Works races, but was nowhere near the pace and finished 2 laps down would still finish about 5th in the championship. I was fed up with being hit from behind by much faster drivers recovering from earlier mistakes and blaming me as I drove my regular pace and line. So I wasn't going to bother to register again, but I changed my mind a day or two ago.

So suddenly I had to go to Kyalami - no problem - just get the Ferrari out and I would be fine. I was surprised with pole and then a good getaway at the start meant that I was in control for the first few laps and then I could pull away a little. I had a problem free race and all the lapped drivers were very courteous. Looking at fastest laps, Hendy was quickest by over a second (with Lotus and some tow) and then 6 of us were separated by 0.6 seconds including 2 BRMs, so there seems to be a lot of closely matched drivers here.

I'm pleased to see my incident with Badblood at 10m34, has met with a fair and reasonable outcome.  A rear impact 1 second later, would have incurred a report of a rear end shunt.  1 second earlier, might have brought up that ambiguous definition of a 'rejoin,' which the Mod team would then have had to circumnavigate.

I am curious that this mid-race incident was not reported to me.  I only received notification  of it's outcome. ( Huh

Whoever submits an incident report should put a tick in the check box against the names of the other drivers involved in the incident.  The system then automatically notifies the drivers involved.  I suspect that didn't happen in this case.  Probably not intentional, more likely finger trouble.
