Moderator's Report

Only one incident of note in the Red Zone but it is T1 and affects almost half the field!

In general, there were three more or less comparable incidents on the straight towards Masta, with no deliberate or intentional weaving/blocking according to different moderators. The following are the guidelines on etiquette for contested passes.

•Where drivers are racing for position, they are expected to display a high level of sportsmanship.
•A driver must not move over on a straight to prevent a pass if doing so would force the driver behind to lift off or brake to avoid running into them. The following driver does not need to have any overlap for this rule to be in effect.
•If the leading driver exits a corner leaving enough room on one side track for another car, they are not permitted to move to that side if the following driver has clearly committed to it and is too close to switch to the other side without lifting off.
•A driver must not move over more than once on a straight to prevent a pass.
•A driver must not change line in or immediately before a braking zone. A driver who is hit from behind as the result of doing this has only themself to blame.
•Persistently driving down the centre of the track in order to make passing difficult is not acceptable.

That is not to say that you have to yield the position without a fight, but we do not allow deliberate weaving or blocking. If you choose the side of the track that gives you the racing line into the next corner and force the overtaking car to take "the long way around" that is entirely fair, provided that you make your selection BEFORE the chasing car makes a move.

Doni has a good start and gets alongside Marco towards Eau Rouge. Both go slightly to the middle, and together with a little warp/lag both make contact. Marco can continue, Doni wrecks, but continues without Shift-R. Greg, Gareth and Dean get caught up in the incident, victims wo cannot avoid the mess, and these three drivers have to use a Shift-R. Typical Spa T1 incident.

Drivers should try and leave space in the first few corners when the field is compressed. You can't win a race at the first corner but you can lose it there. Give eachother more room after the start being alongside.

Server replay time: 0h07m46s

Towards La Source Cookie spins during braking, and Marco can't avoid him. Both can continue, but Clive suffers from warp and ends up on the roof. Clive doesn't seem to be able to retire or reset, and approaching drivers do all a good job avoiding him.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h09m00s

Dean gets a wheel in the grass in Les Combes and spins. Greg chooses outside trying to avoid and spins himself having a wheel in the grass. no contact is made and both can continue.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h09m52s

After Boggy spins in Malmedy, he rejoins in the middle of the track. Greg is approaching seeing Boggy late, and does not know what side to chose, seeing Boggy in the middle. He goes to the left, when Boggy realizes Greg is approaching, he goes left as well. Greg bounces back into Boggy. Both continue. Due to the topography of Malmedy, it is ruled a racing incident.

Stay at a side of the racetrack after rejoining, until up to racing speed.

Server replay time: 0h13m28s

Towards Masta, BadBlood opens up the right side of the track, trying to let Doni pass on the right. But Doni chooses to try to pass on the left, and BadBlood goes slightly to the left too, forcing Doni on the grass. No contact is made, both continue.

This was a result of lack of awareness of BadBlood combined with miscommunication. No intention or deliberate action. Doni could have chosen the right side as there was more room.

Server replay time: 0h16m41s

This was the only reported incident of the race.

Marco stays at the right side of the track, leaving most room on the left. Marco doesn't expect Cookie to pass on the right, as there's more room at the left of the track. Marco slightly goes to the right, but when he realizes Cookie is there, he opens up a bit. After that Cookie then tries to pass on the left, but isn't alongside enough to claim the turn. Marco rightfully takes the racing line in Masta and Cookie has to back out to avoid contact. No contact is made and both continue. There is no clear blocking/weaving going on, but some lack of awareness and miscommunication.

Being the leading car, choose a steady and predictable line not to close in the middle, and hold your line. Be aware where the following car is, using your mirrors. When trying to pass with a tow, choose the side where there is the most room.

Server replay time: 0h20m45s

Doni gets a good exit from Malmedy and picks up the draft from Billy and the pass is inevitable with his speed advantage before Masta.
I think where this all went wrong is that Billy sat more or less in the middle of the track and gave Doni two options as they pass the wall on their left. There is then a slight kink to the right, and Billy makes no adjustment to his steering that I can detect, so his trajectory will take him to the left side of the remainder of the straight down to Masta. Unfortunately, Doni has chosen that side to make his passing move and the gap just closes, with tragic consequences for him. Billy should have been using his mirrors to know where Doni was and where he was going, and he could easily have prevented this contact.

Make it VERY clear which side you want to be passed, and to move across to your chosen side of the track as early as possible. This whole incident was avoidable with a little more awareness and use of mirrors and perhaps with sending the right messages with the positioning of your car.

Moderator's Report

Piero Mercaldo has a good start from P3 and begins to move left to attempt a pass on R Teso. R Peterson position 4 has a better start and pulls ahead of Piero. Although R Peterson is slightly ahead Piero continues to move left until contact is made, causing Ronnie to spin, Piero is not affected and continues. Side by side contact penalty for Piero.

  • Piero Mercaldopenalty — Side by side - 1 place + 1 red zone — 2 places lost

"Bernie was recovering having spun on the racing line. Phil can't avoid Bernie & takes a Shift R. Probably not much else Bernie could have done. This was Phil's second Reset & only one is permitted in this series.

Paul and/or Robert:

These camera views from Spa posted above by Robert are not standard.  At least not in my track directory.  Do you have a special cam file?

Gimme, gimme...svp.
