Season 26 Amateurs Trophy - Round 6 - Zeltweg

NOTE THE CHANGE OF SERVER

Welcome to the second half of the Amateurs Trophy. Back to Europe and the pretty surroundings of Austria. Zeltweg - the original Österreichring. Apologies for the late post.

Originally built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high.

Our race will be run under INT rules and only ONE reset is allowed. Entrants must complete 50% of the race distance to score. ANY Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

All drivers have free choice of chassis although the faster drivers (you know who you are!) should avoid the BT11 and Lotus. There is currently no handicap for this series.

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here

Replays Available here

Driver lists and rules can be found on the championship standings page

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Moderation: Full moderation of lap one red zone which runs to the exit of Schikane.

Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Looks as though the link on UKGPL3 should point to ukgpl3.dyndns.org/tracks/Zeltweg71/Zeltweg_1971.rar   i.e. Zeltweg71

It's a .rar,  so get Winrar or 7-zip ready.   Although probably very little point posting any of this;  as Boggy already stated he has it now & everybody else will have it installed already of course!

Cheers,
Dave.

WHAT. A. RACE.

Got a nice pole with a tow from Johnny. Wasn't entirely intentional to follow him round but I blew an engine in Qually and had to reset. Put me just behind Johnny and he towed me to a pole. At the start I bogged down a little - seemed a long hold on the green flag and I was worried about popping the engine so I let the revs drop just as the flag came down. The 11 yds lead on the grid kept my nose in front but Rog got through at Dr. Tiroch (who was he?) and my cold tyres meant I just couldn't hold him. Johnny put me under pressure and I made a slight mistake at the entry of Schikane. The Coop is no match for the Honda in a straight line though and as my tyres were warm making a pass was not too difficult. Staying there was a different matter.... Rog had built up a lead of some 400 yards while Johnny and I were fighting but I was more pre-occupied with DC and JP behind. Tried to keep it clean and DC and JP clearly had an incident as they disappeared leaving me alone to chase down Roger.

I took 80 yards, 40 yards, lost 60 yards, finally got within a 100 yards with 3 laps to go and although I was faster Rog defended where he had to and I was VERY careful not to nudge him off. Hoped he might make a mistake as I had at Kyalami but no hope.

Great fun chasing him - no idea what went on behind!

Pretty chuffed with the Pole/FL double but I have to thank JP and Rog for that. Just can't nail down that first 65's victory.

WD Rog and Bernie and all the finishers.

Is it just me or is this a VERY evenly matched championship?

Some good, bad & indifferent.
Poor first lap - started 4th, last at the start of lap 1. Mid race pace was reasonable & managed to claw back to third with some good battles along the way. About lap 18 Bernie was pushing hard & I popped the usually bullet proof Brabham engine. After a stop & go the only thing left was to finish on the same lap.
Hard race for Johnny in the Cooper. As Paul says the field is very evenly matched.

Joined the server late as usual these days , got a good set up but the gearing wasn't right so with just a few minuets of qually left I started fumbling with the gear box . fumble was the word , bungle would have been a better one , my next attempt at smashing the track record found 3rd gear higher than 4th ! quick pit stop to adjust things and out again , still way off and time running out , with seconds to go I tanked up re set the box and joined the grid with all fingers and toes crossed only to find that 3rd gear was about the only correct ratio I had in the box while 4th and 5th were just like the driver way too long in the tooth.

All that meant I was a sitting duck on the long straights and any hope of keeping up with you lot was draughting down the faster bits , then once my tyres had reached temp by concentrating on corner exit speed above all else I somehow managed to claw my way into contention . Found myself in 4th behind Billy after Dave Walter & Johnny had taken it in turns to try out various bits of scenery then entering Rindt curve ? I snatched a peek at prib and when i looked back there was Billy girating madly , just scraped through ( glad I had removed the door handles ) the gap to steal the place .
No way of catching Rog and Paul who were in a different race , yes agree they were evenly matched , but a little more even than the rest of us   Tongue

Ta for the fun and good clean racing , begining to like this mod it could catch on  Smiley

Well....
Qualified 5th which I think is my highest and pace seemed quite good although ratios were too low. Adjusted ratios and was ready to go.
Well that was the good bit, did one lap and steering wheel came loose. Tried to carry on but ended up with it in my lap. Time to retire and fire the mechanic.
All in all I think progress in set up was made so not all bad.
Many congratulations to all who took part

I did one practice session for this race. Unfortunately, it was over a week ago. I did not think that I would be able to race today. Then, unexpectedly, my schedule cleared just long enough for the race. So I joined the server with enough time for a small suspension change, and one practice lap. The race started ok, but I was struggling with my pace. Sorry Billy if I caused you to spin in the Texaco-Schikane. I turned into the apex late, and you had to take evasive action. I did not realize how much quicker you were through that section. Then Boggy joined the battle, and I enjoyed the close racing while it lasted. After Boggy overtook me, I was able to improve my pace a little so that I did not lose too much ground. After lap fourteen, I saw the gap to Johnny shrinking, and I took advantage of my extra horsepower to gain the position.  Good race everyone, and congrats to Rog!

Good circuit I like this one, starting 3rd I got away well following Rog and Paul- Paul ran wide early on to let me into 2nd but he was straight back onto me. I didn't put up much resistance to him as he was much quicker and thought best to let him go and fight at the front. Dave passed me and I tried to keep close hoping he may tow me along but it all got a bit too close in turn 1 with him slowing a little mid corner I shunted him off- my mistake sorry Dave. I later span in sympathy watching someone infront run wide also at turn 1 dropping myself well down the order. My front left was over heating towards the end pushing wide on the right hand turns - probably not helped by the extra few psi in my tyres to aid my straight line speed, Walt reeled me in and put a clean pass on me but I had no answer. Hard but fun.... Well done to the podium see you next time.

Grats to Badblood on getting pole. Qually used Monza setup and car went really well, for race dropped the tire pressures and adjusted fuel.  Lap 1 just managed to squeeze past Badblood at Tiroch Curve and started to open up a gap, TILL lap 17 when the Honda started to get bigger in mirrors and Badblood was itching to pass, made mistake last lap at Schikane and Badblood went past, entering Rindt Curve got advantage on inside and pushed through, that gave me the edge to just cross finish line ahead. Thanks Badblood for some great racing and for staying wide at Rindt Curve.

You were clearly concentrating very hard Rog because that last lap where I got past was the warm down! We had already passed the black and white.... I just thought you wanted to race for fun! It was a great battle.
