Dean and Cookie head side by side into T3

Lap 1 and with cold tyres Axel runs wide at T2 getting a wheel on the grass. This slows his car and Sergio takes advantage and passes him. Dean also senses a chance to gain a place and carries more speed through T2 drawing completely alongside Axel on the run down to T3. Having gained 100% overlap Dean is entitled to take the left hand side of the track around the next corner and Axel should keep to the outside.

Although Dean is in Axel's blind spot, Axel should have anticipated that someone would take advantage of his error at T2 and that there might well be a car alongside.

However, Axel turns in towards the Apex and Dean brakes hard and puts his wheels on the grass. It is not clear if this was avoiding action by Dean or a mistake on his part. But it does not really matter, because Axel has parked his car on the apex which Dean could have expected to remain clear if Axel had stayed wide. As a result Dean hits Axel and both cars spin out.

I think this has to be a penalty for Axel for failing to keep to his side of the track in a contested overtake situation. Plus, it is in the red zone.

Contested overtake victim had 100% overlap

Season 26 Friday Mixed Trophy, Round 31 + 32, Oulton Park

We enjoy driving the 1967 version of the track which flows majestically through tree lined avenues, up steep hills, round double apex corners and banked hairpins.  There has never been a round of the Formula 1 World Championship held at Oulton Park but there were a lot of non-championship Formula 1 races held there between 1954 and 1982.
