Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
A well deserved win for pole position sitter Robert Fleurke after the man who actually passed the chequered flag first, Tristan Bot, was disqualified for not having enough tokens to pay for his chosen chassis. Tristan's unfortunate mistake also promoted Bob Whitwell and Tommie van Ostade up to second and third place respectively.

Server replay time: 0h01m21s

Lap 1 - Lesmos 1 - Jethro Walters, Axel Cookie, Gregory Taber, Ronnie Peterson, Dean Logan, Andrew Livingston, Doni Yourth and Andreas Gebhardt.

Jethro gets a slow start and is passed by Bob Whitwell and Axel Cookie before Curva Grande. However Jethro fights back and takes a wide line round Della Roggia to position himself to pass Axel on the inside at Lesmos 1. Jethro outbrakes Axel and steals the inside line but Axel doesn't know he is there and he takes the normal racing line. Contact is made and both cars spin. The unfortunate Gregory Taber is following close behind and cannot avoid the carnage. Complete mayhem ensues as the rest of the field try to negotiate a way round the heaps of expensive machinery littering the track.

Axel is leading Jethro into Della Roggia but he loses sight of him in his mirrors as Jethro takes a wide line through the corner. Axel has no idea where Jethro is and consequently he doesn't leave him any room.

Jethro is obviously keen to make up the places he has lost and seizes an opportunity to attempt a pass. He leaves his braking to the latest possible moment but he still managed to keep to the inside line and didn't drift wide.

This wasn't an easy pass to attempt but Jethro managed to slow the car sufficiently to maintain the inside line and secure more than 50% overlap at turn in. However he didn't manage to achieve the 100% overlap necessary to claim the corner outright. Axel wasn't expecting an attack at this corner but he should have been sure there was no car on his inside before taking the racing line. This has to go down as a racing incident (Contested Overtake - Scenario 1) but it could have been avoided if Jethro had been a little more patient and Axel a little more aware. It could be argued that a greater proportion of the blame resides with Jethro as he instigated the attempted pass but it wasn't a reckless attempt, he did achieve a significant overlap and he didn't run wide. Drivers have to be allowed to race and it is not in anyone's interest to penalise drivers in borderline situations such as this. All drivers, not just Jethro and Axel, should learn from this incident and recognise that the only way to race at close quarters is when both drivers are fully aware, don't take unnecessary risks and leave room where appropriate.

Season 27 Works Trophy - Round 4 - Monza

After a few difficult circuits we return to more familiar ground at Monza for Round 4 of the Season 27 Graduates Works Trophy Championship.

Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan, in Italy. The circuit's biggest event is the Formula One Italian Grand Prix, which has been hosted there since the sport's inception.

Replays Available here

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated from the start to the exit of the second Lesmo on Lap 1. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Knew it was too good to be true... 3rd on the grid, 4th after Curva Grande, go for an overtake into Lesmo 1 and it's like I'm not supposed to be there.......

No idea Tris, all data are correct imported. We will fix this! Of course you won!

@Jethro

Sorry for the crash, I did not expect you there and was concentrating on the front runners...
My right front was bend too much so I tried some laps and gave up.

Argh Embarrassed

Yes!

"A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.
Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero."

Only had one good lap in quali, and it was good for pole. Tristan started better and didn't want to force the issue in Curva Grande and slotted in behind him. Bob stayed close behind me for the first few laps.

Like often, everytime when I pushed to get closer made a little mistake going sideways or losing momentum, and then did need 10 laps to make up for 1 second. Had hoped for a better racepace but somehow had a lot of trouble to get into the 27s late race and ran out of laps to threaten Tristan, finishing within a second...

Very tough luck Tristan, in my mind you won the race, that will stay, but I take the points for the win it seems...also well done Bob and Tommie and finishers...commiserations to the retirements...

What a race!

Congratulations Rob, Bob, Tom, and all the finishers!

It was real heartbreaker for a lot us. A tough mistake on Tristan's part. You weren't the only one though. A real shame for Jethro, Axel, Ray, and Donnie. Sad I was hoping to get in line behind the front 5 for the 1st half of the race. I thought I might have the pace to give Jethro, Axel, and Bob a tough race.

I'm surprised my race wasn't ended on lap 1 with the other unfortunates. I could see things weren't going to go well coming to the Lesmos. I wasn't sure what was going to happen in front of me. I wanted to slow more but I saw a Lotus and Ferrari closing in behind me. I didn't appear to have much choice with both Axel and Jethro sideways in front of me. I chose to try to stop. From the replay it looks like I could have got lucky and threaded a needle between Axel and Jethro but I'm not that good! I was surprised to come out of that with the car intact. The next few laps the car wandered a lot on the straights and I was hesitant to brake at my usual spots. I knew the car was damaged but had no idea of the extent. I couldn't take it easy though with Tom not far behind. He stayed about 3 seconds behind me for a while while Bob pulled further ahead at about .5 per lap and Tristan .75. Once I opened a gap of 8 seconds on Tom I started cruising somewhat. No way to gain on Bob. Later I started saving fuel until Bob had some trouble and his 20 second lead was down to less than 10. I started pushing again. And then Bob spins in Lesmo 1. My adrenaline is going by then and I get impatient to take P3 from Bob and carry too much speed into Lesmo 2, spinning into the guard rail. With more damage to the car, what do I do? Take it easy the last lap and take P4? No, I try even harder and blow the engine at Ascari on the last lap! What an idiot! Good job Bob! You suckered me into two stupid mistakes. lol

All in all though, it wasn't too bad for me. I end up once spot lower than I qualified. It was a lot of fun. It would be nice to even out the excitement though. Too much at the beginning and end, and not enough through the middle.

From the results, it looks like I could have had a good pace today. I think my damage slowed me about .5 seconds on average. Prerace practice had me at 28 flat by lap 16 but it took me almost that long to get into the 28s during the race.

Had hoped for a better racepace but somehow had a lot of trouble to get into the 27s late race

Me too. I can't figure out why I seem to lose a half second Saturday to Sunday. I ran 27.69 Saturday with consecutive laps under 28. The previous Works race at Monza I ran my PB 27.52 and regular 27.8-9's on Saturday  but race day I was back into the 28s. I didn't really expect 27's during the race but I expected to run under 28.5 through the second half of the race. I didn't come close to doing that.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the fun.

https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=12471.0

I was gonna say that's a bit harsh Doni, selfishly I'm only glad I wasn't caught up in it.  I saw the gap open on L1 via prib and hoped my cautious start had nothing to do with it, which it doesn't seem to.  Continuing on the selfish tone, this was obviously a massive help for me since I was immediately in a safe third, leaders just in-front, Greg a ways back with a damaged car.

I didn't expect to have the pace to challenge the top two and my main objective was to see the end.  Had a reasonably okay race although I too expected to be quicker, managing a 27.7 in offline praccy, but I really can't complain.  A couple of spins gave Greg the opportunity to challenge me into Lesmo 2, having sportingly given me plenty of room he then spun to take the pressure off again.  From then I was just hoping my engine would last and was short shifting in some gears.

Tragic outcome Tris, but at least you won 'on the track'.

Cheers,

Bob67!

Well, I had done no preparation for this race ( nothing too unusual there as I rarely practice a known track), but I have to confess the wall to wall Lotii and Eagles was a little surprising. Although I suppose, given the level of competition in Works these days, not to be unexpected.

Perhaps I was being unduly pessimistic but I was anticipating a crash fest at some point, and decided to save my tokens and take the BRM. I have never had any joy with this car and I felt that it was about time I spent some time getting to grips with it. Monza is a relatively simple track, so my aim was to start at the back and be sure to finish. Maybe if there had been something other than an Eagle or Lotus to race I might have had more fun, but I could not hustle that BRM at a pace that would trouble the faster cars.

having said that, I did arrive at Lesmo 1 in 13th place on lap 1, and exited Lesmo 2 in 4th!!  The wall of scrap metal simply parted as i arrived and I drove straight through... and YES I did laugh!!!! lol lol lol

It took a good few laps for those who survived the melee to either drop out or catch up and for a while I wondered if I might scoop some serious points for the cost of only a couple of tokens. But slowly cars caught and passed me to relegate me to 8th at the end.

I would be grateful for anyone's BRM setups for Monza as I never bettered 1:30 in the race, although I was never pushing at 100% as anything involving a slide just ignited the rear tyres and sent the handling into the "random" category.

Grats and hard luck to Tris ( check the tokens next time Tris  Undecided ) and grats to a good haul of points to Robert and the finishers. I was quite surprised that so many cars made it to the finish as there were some notoriously fragile engines out there...as Greg found out!!

A couple of spins gave Greg the opportunity to challenge me into Lesmo 2, having sportingly given me plenty of room he then spun to take the pressure off again.

Yes, the last thing I wanted to do was risk colliding with you. The timing couldn't have been worse for me. Had I caught you a fraction of a second earlier, I could have easily made the pass. A fraction of a second later and I would have tucked in behind you with more than a lap to go. I think the long lull during the middle of the race caught me a little unprepared for the rising intensity at the end. It was fun though, getting overwhelmed by the situation, especially since I caused no harm for anybody else. Smiley

I was quite surprised that so many cars made it to the finish as there were some notoriously fragile engines out there...as Greg found out!!

lol It wasn't the fragile engine that was the problem. It was my fragile self discipline. Smiley I got caught up in the moment and the only thing that was going to slow me down was a crash, spin, or engine explosion. And it took all three in the last 1.5 laps to finally stop me. I really needed somebody to tell me to slow down on the last lap. I'm usually calm and patient the first 3/4's of the race but near the end, I can get a little crazy. I'm a little irritated I couldn't quite make it to the finish line. I'd have liked to known whether that last lap banzai charge yielded me good times in the 1st and 2nd sector?

Even though I threw away a very good finishing position, I enjoyed the race. I still can't quit smiling and laughing at what I did the last 1.5 laps. Hopefully, it's another lesson learned.

......it's more fun to take the chassi  who go well whith the track......     (  .... well Isaid this......Isaid nothing..... angel   )

.....anyway it was a good fight whith Rob who never stop the pressure......and I have no regret to race the lotus who give me good fun.....never mind the disqual....!
