You definitely have my sympathy, Misnoimis ... I injured my back 12 months ago, it flared up again at Christmas and it still stops me from doing races of more than about 45-60 minutes.

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I lasted a bit longer tried to keep out of the way of lapping cars on T1 but jumped the fence - drove around outside the fence until I found la la land.  Roll Eyes

When the lights turned green I had a good start and, after some early-lap skittles, I found myself in P2 with Clive ahead and Erling close behind. Clive gradually eked out a couple of seconds lead but Erling's Healey was a constant presence looming large in my mirrors. This state of affairs was maintained for about 3/4 of the race until Clive dropped it and I inherited the lead. Erling increased the pressure but my Merc seemed to have just a bit more "umph" over the latter part of the lap so I was able to keep ahead. Meanwhile Clive was staging an awesome recovery and in my mirror I was able to watch the drag race between Erling and Clive out of the final turn and over the finish line  ... check the results to see the outcome ... what a finish  Grin

Thanks for the series, Tony ... great stuff  Smiley

wow, what a race.
My first race with aston martin db1. Very difficult to drive but the qualy was very good. The start was horrible. I had to be careful because it's easy to spin. 2nd place behind Clive. In 2nd lap I made a little mistake and can't recovery to the track until leave pass all the drivers. Last place for me but 24 laps to the finish.
I tried to keep calm and little by little gain positions and the gap with the top 3 close and close.
6 laps to go, in the first turn I saw Clive at the middle of the track. I tried to avoid but I lost the control of the car and spun again. My options to get to the top 3 vanished and 4th for me this time.
I would have liked to fight with the top 3 would have been more fun. Anyway, funny race. Race for learn to drive this beast.

Grats Bill, Clive and Erling for the pod.
Thanks all!

Cheers

I managed to get a just few laps practice in over the weekend. I knew the circuit, it is the same as the original GPL track, but these cars are different so I wanted to try them out.

This version of Zandvoort is a conundrum because the only place to pass ( assuming the car in front does not make a mistake) is braking for Tarzan, so straight line speed is important. But,, as the last lap would show  Wink. The sweeping corners around the rest of the track need a car with good handling to maximise lap times.

I had sort of decided that it was either the Aston Martin or the Merc, simply because they had greater top speed over the Healey.

After just a few laps with the Merc and some minor tweaks to the setup it just felt so solid and stable. The Aston was faster but was more of a handful, so the decision was easy...the Merc would have to do.

Quali was done on race fuel until the final rush for pole started and Jose started to post some serious laptimes, along with one or two others. So, knowing that track position is everything around Zandvoort I dumped a load of fuel and went on a Banzai lap. That still did not get me pole!! lol Jose was tantalisingly just ahead, but at least I was on the front row.

I could not believe my luck at the start when the Mercedes just hooked up and Jose's car bogged down. I was into Tarzan in 1st place and had a clear track ahead... I just had to make it count. So I pushed really hard through lap1, very aware of those Aston's behind and their top speed down the straight.
I pulled enough of a gap to survive  and tried to concentrate on my braking and my lines to maximise the speed through the back of the circuit. lap 2 and Jose dropped back and I had a comfortable lead to build on. Gradually I stretched out my advantage and at one point I was seeing 5 secs plus advantage, but a couple hesitations as I passed backmarkers reduced that ( no complaints about those backmarkers they moved over as soon as they could safely do so, it was just my bad luck to catch them where I did).

as the fuel load came down I was braking later and later into Tarzan, fully aware that Bill and Coyote were keeping up a relentless pressure just a few seconds behind. Then a momentary lapse of reason and I just pushed the braking a couple of metres too far so that the rear tyre just clipped the sand at Tarzan and despite fighting the slide with all the lock I could apply the tail came around and I was beached on the inside of the bend.
Mr Grewcock and his shadow did not stop to ask if I was OK and swept past. In my hurry to get after them, I might have re joined the circuit a little too briskly in front of Jose, for which I apologise.
For the next few laps red mist overcame effective driving and it was not until I started to concentrate properly that the gap to Coyote's bootlid started to close, but we were now into the last 3 laps!!!  Shocked
As we entered the last lap I was still 10 mtrs adrift and only some absolute "on the limit" cornering closed those last few metres. I knew that my only chance to gain back a place was the drag race out of the last corner so I put everything I had into nailing that exit onto the finishing straight.
I really did not think I was going to make it as Coyote had his right foot screwed to the floor in that Healey, but slowly the slipstream dragged me closer and as we passed the pits I dived out and put both feet on the accelerator pedal. Slowly, oh so slowly!!,  I drew alongside that Healey, with the line rushing towards us.
It was not until I slowed and looked at the positions that I realised I had robbed Coyote of his 2nd place by the smallest of margins.

Grats to Bill who made no mistakes and took full advantage of my lapse. Sorry ( well mild regrets  Roll Eyes to Coyote on that finish, and sorry too to Jose for my rejoin at Tarzan.

That was probably the most intense race I've done yet!

Bill crept ahead at the start, and I slipped into 5th behind him.  That was upgraded to 3rd free of charge on lap 2, when Matt & Jose went off at the same time.

Every lap bar a couple where I got too close, was driven as hard as I could, but it was only enough to keep up with Bill (Jeez Bill, is one single mistake really too much to ask for ?  Wink)

Jose was slowly reeling us in again, but then we happened upon a spun Clive.  That removed the threat from Jose, who unfortunately seemed to get a very raw deal from Clive's rejoining - and Bill and I were now fighting for the lead.  Clive was on the chase and slowly came closer.  He seemed to struggle through the corners (or is that just his driving style ?), which gave me hope.  Unfortunately, as the final portion of the final lap approached, he was too close, and down the straight the Merc definitely holds the advantage over the Healey.  Not much I could do to prevent him from passing, short of actively blocking his way, but that's not really my style.  Still, losing by a mere 4/100 of a sec, to your current worst competitor for the crown, is just..  censored

Grats to Bill G on a virtually flawless drive, and although I feel more like kicking him  Wink, I guess I have to congratulate Clive too, on a well executed recovery!

Commiserations to Bill T & Tony, whom we lost. Tony, it looks decidedly weird in the replay (my own) - as if you're hitting an invisible wall and then suspended over the track  Huh

Cheers,
Erling
