At times it can be a sobering experience to find out just how much you suck. Today was one of those times..
Big improvement of my pb, when I did my first sub-33 laps online today, but still laughably far off the pace. For once got a decent start and didn't lose places. Gained one on L1 when Hayman went off.
Tried hard to stay with Matt & Phil over the early laps, while building a 4-sec gap to Tony behind. Alarmed to see the gap suddenly drop to 2.5 secs. Had Tony gained a second wind ? Checking a lap later solved the mystery: it was Hayman making his way through the field. Doing the check broke my concentration, and I did a stupid downshift mistake at T1. Dropped into 1st and promptly spun off. At least it made Hayman's job easy.
Unfortunately, my gap to Tony & Roger had all but disappeared when I went off. As we neared the halfway point, my tyres were pretty much gone. Went wide and off at the lava rock, letting Tony past. Tried hard to hang on to him, and put him under pressure. While doing this, Roger was sneaking up behind me in his stealthy (red) Healey. Hadn't noticed his car in my tiny mirror, and couldn't hear the quiet Healey over the glorious howl of the Aston's engine. Thus rather shocked when I looked behind me and found his car to pretty much fill the entire screen..
Managed to keep him behind for a number of laps. With my worsening tyres, Tony was inching away. Knew I was doomed when I put my outside rear wheel on the gravel in the double left-hander after the viaduct. No amount of opposite lock could catch the ensuing slide, and so Roger was past too.
With a few laps left, I caught a glimpse of Matt's car up ahead, but any hope of a fight to the finish evaporated, when I went off again at the double left-hander.
Thus finished 9th. Grats to the podium and all ahead of me. Jose has taken a big bite out of my Championship lead, so hope I can do a little better in the remaining two races
Liked the track until about halfways, when a bad graphics stutter set in. Never had this when practicing alone, so perhaps caused by other cars being within the field of view, but occluded by the track and/or objects. Anyone else have this problem ?
Cheers,
Erling
