Moderator's Report

From the many comments on the forum after this race it would seem that we basically had 2 versions of the same track in use, and each version offers different advantages and problems. I think that IF Tullin is run again at sometime we may have to insist that all drivers use the same option and penalise anyone seen driving through solid objects , like we do with the pit wall at Kyalami.
Having watched some of the replays and incidents, I can see how many of the problems arose. If the car you are following drives straight through a haybale and yet you cannot, frustration and confusion levels are bound to be raised. It also affects the braking point for the car in front if he has to be sure to go around the haybale that you can drive straight through!!!!
In hindsight I am surprised that there were not a load more major incidents!!!

Server replay time: 0h00m08s

Greg gets it all wrong under braking and despite some attempt at avoiding Arf, he simply wipes him into the bales.

Blatant Rear End Shunt: Penalty 2 Places

Server replay time: 0h03m15s

Arf is a sitting duck as Doni arrives at the scene and makes inevitable contact. Arf recovers and tries to get under way around the inside of the corner, regrettably Doni also has intentions of rejoining the race as quickly as possible and sends his car on the most direct line through the same apex.
Whilst Doni should maybe have been aware that Arf might be there he does not see him until a second contact is made.

I am calling this a Racing Incident as neither driver did anything horrendously wrong. Arf was stranded and Doni simply had nowhere to go in the initial contact and the contact as they recovered was very unfortunate.

Welcome to the S27 F2 Championship - Round 8 - Tulln Langenlebarn

Round 7 of the Formula 2 Trophy, we go to Austria. The military Airport Langenlebarn/Tulln (German: Militärflugplatz Langenlebarn/Tulln) was located 4 kilometres (2 mi) east-southeast of Tulln, Lower Austria. In 1967 the F2 race of the European Championship was won by Jochen Rindt, 2nd Jack Brabham. Jim Clark was also on the grid. Beware of the bumpy straights...

There will be no handicaps this season but, much like the 67-based series, tokens will be used!

This track is nuts on the main straight, so bumpy in any gear. I predict a high rate of attrition...

I'm just glad to click off another rank track.... shame they didn't have Osterreichring yet built! That and Nurbs would really spice up the F2 rank a bit, IMO. But I can drive Nurbs in this mod  laugh

EDIT: But clearly I can't drive an extremely bumpy Tulln  Shocked Now that I remember reading about this track, really, it should have been re-released, as the layout was altered, not to mention bumps added and bales being mere images for some.. Kyalami pit barrier is a moot point now!

Well that was just generally silly.....I saw so many bumps and mistakes. Anyone who make it through this one deserves a medal.

Two people who in my book should not be queuing up for medals are Greg and Doni. At the end of Lap 2 Greg made a crazy lunge/outbraked himself and took me out. Doni was about 4 cars behind and probably couldn't do anything about hitting me. The first time. As we both moved away he made a bee line for the apex, from the outside of the track - I feel he had to know I was there and as such did not leave me any rooom, contacted with me, and I got spun and hit and spun and hit again.

I played on for a few laps, but I was clearly not in the mood after that, made too many errors and ended up a lap behind. Just gave up after a while....

bah humbug...

Sorry, Arf...  Don't know what you're talking about as I had so many incidents in this crazy, wild event.  I'll check the replay and see if I can find this.  If I've savaged you, my profound apologies.  Only after the race did it become known to me that there may be an updated '.trk' file for this circuit that alters some aspects.  I saw people driving thru the outer string of haybales exiting the last corner with not the slightest impediment.  There may be other conflicts.  This may account to some degree for our clash, Arf.  Will investigate...

Just looked at the Lap02 business, Arf.  Can't say that you have anything to gripe about concerning me.  I was rather busy recovering after cuffing your tail and didn't see that you were on my left.  I had no idea that you were there.

Someone who does have cause to complain is Rog.  Sorry for the Lap07 butt-ram going into the hairpin, bud.  Clearly got that wrong.  I'm off to see the headmaster.

I have no idea how I got to P3 after a messy quali with P10 on the grid, then getting involved in both lap 1 shunts ánd spinning on the pit straight! But can't complain Cheesy .

Grats Dave for a fine win and Dean for P2! Also grats all finishers, this was a tough one.

I just pulled down and installed the track from the link posted by Cookie in the lead.  Not the same animal that I drove at all.  All manner of changes that I wasn't aware of including the considerable number and severity of bumps on the main straight and the altered final corner haybale arrangement.

Not watched any replays yet , though I did note there was some comments about backmarkers being a problem in post race chat . for the record , I d/l the light version of the track , gave it a spin to check all was OK ,  then I  added the track updates , I then found the bumpiness of the updated version so bad it hurt my eyes when going down the straights , so went back the "light" version which I found much more pleasant to drive .

It wasn't until race time when cars began lapping ,me that I noticed several times they were disappearing through the haybales , so definately some anomalies exist between the two track layouts , weather this was the reason for the poor backmarker performance mentioned or not , who knows ? but thought it worth a mention .

Thought the track was a bit dull as most of these flat airfield circuits tend to be by nature , but being short it did make for some exciting racing , (not that I did much  ) . Absolutely tons of space here , so don't quite understand why backmarkers were a problem .

As usual these days , I was way off the pace , can't get into some of these mods , maybe there just a bit to fast for an old timer like me  Roll Eyes

Grats to the podium and all who survived to the finish .

I also saw several racers going through the haybales.
That was not the case for me, and also not the case for Dean.
So final result is better in this way.

With the updated version, I think we can go faster for 0,5 sec in this part of the track. I don't know if there are other changes between the 2 versions.

Yes, I had several troubles to overtake some backmarkers when they were not giving space at the braking point and stayed at the apex of the turn. That was the case with you, Bernie, and I spun 2 times trying to overtake you.
I was following Dean when it happened but then I loose contact.
It seems Dean also had troubles with backmarkers ...and maybe an accident forced him to do a SnG.
But he did a great performance with the Cooper.

I made several training with different cars, Cooper was too slow for me, Protos quick but unpredictable ...McLaren was just perfect !

Had bad start missed gears, lucky missed the mayhem at turn one, was shunted off several times early race, and noticed cars going through hay bales, lap 26 did a bad rejoin and took Iestyn out Sorry Iestyn, most of race tried to stay out of way of faster drivers kept to right hand side on straight and tight into turn one.

Started with somenthing strange,my best lap was around 1,18 when in my test around 1,10 was possible for me.
Left the qualy and a check on GEM have revealed that the 60fps was again active.
Without i regain my time but despite this my car is always slower on the straight, there is something in my gas pedal (electrical signal)that i'm not able to fix.

I apologize Axel and Arf. I made mistakes. I didn't expect Axel to be so slow exiting T2. When I bumped you, I was still waiting to apply the throttle. Usually by that point I was back at full throttle. That was a bad misjudgement on my part. Sad Arf, I can understand you being angry with me. I missed my braking point. I wasn't trying to pass you. I knew I was going to run into the back of you so I went right hoping it would buy me more time to get the car slowed. There was no room to the left. You might ought to be glad I didn't stick you between two hay bales like I did Axel? There was no malice on my part, just errors.

I'm also a cheater? I used the old tulln.dat. I tried the updated dat after the race to see the differences. The old dat is a little faster. Mainly in sector 2 and 3. I can take a wider line at the end of the start-finish straight, carrying more speed through T1 and higher speed approaching T2. I could also carry more speed onto the pit straight and a higher speed at the end of the pit straight. The braking for T1 is easier with the old dat. The turn before the pit straight is easier with the old dat too. The new dat seems to be wider through the final hay bales thus giving you a straighter line onto the start-finish straight. The only advantage of the new dat. I never could get a good run on Piero on the straight because of that. If you're viewing the replay using the old dat, the drivers using the new dat will pass through the bales on the left in the final turn and they will bounce around a lot more on the straight. If you're viewing with the new dat, the drivers using the old dat will pass through the hay bales and cones on the left side at the end of the start-finish straight. I wonder if the differences in dats helped caused me so many problems when approaching cars before the final turn and the turn after the pits? I had trouble with both those turns almost if not every time I closed on a car before those two turns. There is an advantage using the old dat. It may not be much faster on PB's but it is definitely easier to be consistent.

I think the old dat is about .5 seconds faster. My PB with the old dat is 5.94 and after 3 qualifying runs with the new dat, I did 6.38. I was conservative in qualifying, thinking I might be cheating. 5.7 appeared to be possible just by running a good lap. I think I can actually break 5.5 on the old dat without a tow. I don't see myself getting much under 6 with the new dat. Before I had to reset, I had my ideal lap down to 5.11 and the car was just starting to really go fast. Late in the race with a good tow, I thought I might approach Tristan's Rank time.

Congratulations Dave, Dean, and Tommie! I thought Dean would surely win after I got stuck on a hay bale and had to reset and stop-and-go. The second half of the race I spun too many times on my own trying to push as hard as possible to try to catch the leaders. Good job guys, but you did got lucky I wasn't able to get in the lead and open a gap. The race would have been rather easy for me after that.

Overall, it was a rather embarrassing and poor drive on my part. I don't know if I've ever had so much trouble following other cars. I suspect the difference in dats played a small part if not more. I'm ashamed I ruined Axel and Arf's race. I guess I should have bumped Piero off entering the final turn on lap 1 instead of going into the hay bales. The incident that led to all the trouble I caused on lap 2. I likely would have cut the number of cars I hit in half and been more likely to win.

Thanks guys.

Grats to Dave, Dean and Tom.

Not for one minute suggesting the result should not stand but I wonder if the moderation team will be scrutinising the incident packed start and corner cutting going on last night with the same zeal they have shown elsewhere  Roll Eyes

Tough one for everybody. Well done again to the podium boys and better luck next time everyone else. See you all at the next one.
