Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

A pole-to-flag victory for Jonny O in the Coyote Brabham, completing a hattrick with Fast Lap and Pole Position, congratulations! Championship leader Phil Thornton in the Antipasti Ferrari finished a close second pushing Jonny in the final laps. Bastian Grupp secured a very good podium spot in the Ferrari, in his debutrace, in a Brabham dominated field. Well done!

The frontrunners basically had the same pace, but mistakes and offs by all meant they were pretty close in the last part of the race. Phil tried to push Jonny into a mistake but Jonny didn't falter and secured victory.

Dave Rainier finished 4th being most consistent and 100% on track. Bernie Darwin finished 5th being the last lead lap finisher, profiting from a late race mishap of Michael Turner, who blew up his Repco engine. Turner would eventually finish 7th, behind Dave Curtis. Curtis had his own engine probs when running in 3rd, but was able to salvage a 6th place.

Pierre Demarle, Walter Conn complete the finishers, and Billy Nobrakes completes the classified drivers. Other drivers had to retire early in the race, commiserations.

A very good job by all in the Red Zone after the start. No incidents were reported. All Stop & Go penalties after resets were performed according the rules.

There were quite a few offs and blown engines, but the racing itself was very clean. Keep it up.

Season 27 Privateers Trophy - Round 7 - Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen International (nicknamed "The Glen") is an automobile race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. The sports car racing facility is owned by International Speedway Corporation. It was long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for twenty consecutive years (1961–1980), but since 1948 the site has been home to road racing of nearly every class, including Formula One, the World Sportscar Championship, Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and the IndyCar Series. Initially, public roads in the village were used for the race course. In 1956 a permanent circuit for the race was built. In 1968 the race was extended to six hours, becoming the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen. The circuit's current layout has more or less been the same since 1971, although a chicane was installed at the uphill Esses in 1975 to slow cars through these corners, where there was a fatality during practice at the 1973 United States Grand Prix. The chicane was removed in 1985, but another chicane called the "Inner Loop" was installed in 1992 after a fatal accident during the previous year's NASCAR Winston Cup event. The circuit is a very popular venue among fans and drivers.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of the Loop. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I'm sorry Bad Blood for the contact.  Embarrassed I feel like I had enough time to take avoiding action, but my brain told me to go left when I should have went right. In my mind, I wanted to slip past on the outside of the corner. I should have known better!

I had a few mistakes in the following laps, but I was able to button things down for the second half of the race. I enjoyed this car and track combination, and overall, it boosted my confidence in the 67' cars.

Good race,
Walter

That was a very exciting race!  Grats to JonnyO on a hard fought win and Bastian for solid third place.  The pace was hot with all three drivers on the podium lapping faster than the pole time!  A well deserved win Jonny, I managed to catch you thanks to your mistake but I couldn't get close enough to attack.  A couple of back markers helped me out at one stage LOL, I bet you were worried then Grin.

My second place might be important in the title race.  I've got 304 points but I need to drop 2 scores.  It may look like I've got a big lead in the championship but it isn't over yet by a long way.  Bernie, Dave R, Michael and Dave C can all win the title but on todays showing it looks like JonnyO is my main competitor.

I won't be able to race in Round 9 on 21 December (I'm on a ski holiday in France  thumbup2) so that means I'll have to drop at least 32 points from my total.  There are lots of permutations but Johnny has already had 2 non scoring rounds, so if he wins the next 3 rounds the maximum he can score is 358.  If I came second in 2 of the last 3 races the maximum I could get is also 358 but Jonny would win the title because he has the most wins. A close race today and a close championship!!!

Total frustration for me.After a good start and after some overtaking and withdrawal,i was sixth under Darwin that, at my last lap,he used the turbo.Omitting this and entering the Big Band i fail to introduce the third gear and i go out of the track with overturning.Stop and go but at the restart, after some meters, there was smoke from my engine.
I'm tempted to abandon the H gear and the clutch for the more easy button Huh

Absolutely my fault Walt. I had slightly lost the car and with that little room contact was almost inevitable.

My setup was awful. I had bad understeer which switched to snap oversteer. Not sure why because it is a setup I have used successfully before.

85/30 understeered and 60/30 over-rotated. Can somebody remind me how to stiffen the setup to prevent that over rotation?

Anyway. Was enjoying chasing Bill. Lost him through the first corners and was then quicker through the last corners so a bit frustrating but fun. Sad to take Walt out and after that the car was a bit wobbly and that bought back my motion sickness which has been a massive problem for me this season. Ah well.

Almost a Brabham Spec race. Perhaps we need a few more tokens to mix it up.
Doing modestly well for about 35 laps - shame the race was 45. I can usually get into the 1.06s but trying to get there I braked a touch to late in the Big Bend, explored the ditch & upset the steering. After a couple of 1.12 laps it felt to late in the race to take a Shift R so I just parked it.
Having a poor mid-season - have to up the concentration levels for the last few races.

Assuming you were not hitting the bumpers ( would give you snap oversteer ) , you have several options .

Increase front roll bar setting

decrease rear roll bar

decrease front ride height

increase rear ride hight

decrease front spring rate

Increase rear spring rate

soften front shockers

stiffen rear shockers

Either or all of a combination of above , good luck  Grin

If all else fails , sell the car , buy a brabham  Cheesy

having said that , I too suffered from understeeritus , maybe its catching ( though not in your case it seems )  Roll Eyes

my own race was pretty average , had a good run fending off francesco for the first half , then team mate Mike caught and passed me but unfortunately popped his engine near to the finish . couldnt do a thing about the fast guys in front you are way to quick . championship seems to be btw. Phil $ Jonny O , dont think anyone else has a realistic chance except maybe monsuer Rainier !

I do not think I can be 100% in other races .... is very remote.

But this race was very tense, in the end I was exhausted, the pace was all over very fast time.

I thought Thornton would in the end, it was very tight !!fun...fun!!!!!

  Congrats podium!

I never seem to go too well here,  so was surprised to have been sat in a potential 3rd place on the grid until the last moments of qually - although it was all rather close just behind.
Come the start,  was happy with being 4th on the grid - although I knew the fast guys ahead would streak away.

I mainly did ok during the race,  managed to not crash too much.   I even managed dizzy heights of 3rd place at one point,  although the engine went pop around lap10.

As my spare care was paid for with my own money, I was being particularly careful [for me, anyway] with revs/gearchanges & taking it easy generally.   I suspected my downshifts probably did for the 1st car.

With the reset & stop/go,  I was quite a way behind.

After 50% distance,  the old ways were starting to creep back in again & I was trying to get a bit quicker.   I think just a couple of misfortunes ahead let me sneak a couple of places back.   Overall,  I'm happy enough with provisional 6th.

Good running up the front there.  Way too quick for me.

Note to the regulars so far - look out for that Grupp fellow  Smiley  [you can check him out on EOLC]
Welcome to privateers Bastian!  I guess you'll be keeping them busy up the front!

Cheers all,
Dave.

Cheers,
Dave.

I'm going to Les Deux Alpes in December, it's a very good resort for beginners.  My niece and my son's girl friend are coming with us this year.  They haven't skied before so hopefully there will be plenty of snow in the resort and they will be able to use the nursery slopes.

I've skied several times in France (Val D'Isere x2, Les Deux Alpes x2, Meribel x2, Val Thorens x1, every resort is always fantastic).  I've never skied in Italy but I would like to, perhaps I will try the Dolomiti next year!

I'll be doing a bit more serious skiing in January.  I've entered the Inferno Downhill Ski Race at Murren, Switzerland.  I did it last year and finished 332/345 in my category (see results sheet) so there is some room for improvement!  It is a big race, there were 1696 competitors in total last year.

Souvenirs souvenirs .... I was a dragoon near Besançon an we were skiing once in a while at Les Rousses with army equipment (leather boots and aluminum skis - terrible). In order to improve the relations with the station's mayor who was pissed off with having too much military staff on the slopes, we were wearing random colour anoraks but with our short hair (in the 70s) and our own ambulance in the parking lot, nobody was fooled .
