Moderator's Report

Dean Logan enters qually with a Matra and with approx 15 mins left before the start of the race he switched his car for the Cooper. The rules clearly state that drivers may only change a chassis in qualification if they have NOT set a lap time.
This allows for a simple mistake on the part of the joining driver to be corrected without penalty.
In past seasons this was a straightforward and clear cut. But this rule now has the added complication of the token system. Dean did not have sufficient tokens to have used his original choice of car anyway and should have selected the Cooper at the outset.
It may have been an honest mistake on Dean's part but as the moderator I have no option to apply this rule as it stands and DQ him, but I think that this issue should be debated at the end of season review and a consensus view taken.

On lap 8 Marco gets a better line and exit whilst chasing Fran and draws alongside just before the next left hand corner.. Unfortunately Fran has lost track of where Marco is and is not aware that there is a car inside when he turns in. GPL almost always punishes the car on the outside and Fran is flung into the barriers. Marco continues without damage.
Marco had gained 100% overlap at the point of turn in and was entitled to take the inside line. Fran maybe should have been aware of where Marco might be, but in fairness it was a long time since the other car had been visible.

Billy has a problem at the hairpin and is slow getting under way up the hill. David closes up very quickly and makes a clean line through the hairpin.
Although Billy is some distance ahead, David's extra momentum quickly closes the gap as they reach the next right hand bend. His speed gives him the opportunity to make a passing attempt up the inside.
I think Billy was caught out by this move as David had not been clearly visible in his mirrors and he had not anticipated that he could close the gap so quickly.
As a result Billy turns in to take his normal line and chops the nose off of David's car. In my view David had achieved enough overlap to oblige Billy to keep to his own side of the circuit.

Axel is struggling with a car almost out of fuel and runs off at T1 as he tries to avoid contact with Ronnie.
Doni closes rapidly on Axel as he recovers towards the apex of T2 and closes the door at the last minute on Doni who suffers from the impact.

Axel is at fault for a poor rejoin especially in a car that he knows will be slow due to lack of fuel

Personally I like fuller grids...

Me too !

But I dislike the usual carnage after the 1st or the 2nd turns ! like it happened again, yesterday evening.
What could we do to avoid it ? It seems penalties have no effects.

Grats to Clive , Robert and Dean.

Great track and a very enjoyable race.

From the comments above, some had fuel issues. Can someone clarify the rule on using a shift-r to refuel. I have always been under the impression that where a single shift-r is permissible it was not to be used for this purpose. If this is not the case, then when and where can fuel stops be made? I routinely overfill to avoid this but on occasion would welcome the opportunity to use a lighter car in two stints if this is available?

Lastly, hope the wife is on the mend Jethro.

Thanks for the kind words gents, we are officially home! I'd been practising in the Lola-BMW, given enough time and a setup to my liking I may have even kept it at the sharp end. Oh well, there are other races. Smiley

Yes, they do. They also state "The primary goal of this rule is to prevent drivers continually swapping chassis depending on what the other competitors are choosing...", which, as I explained in my incident report, had NOTHING to do with my actions.

Quote
...DLogan (Dean Logan67F2) — change of chassis — excluded

So the worst example of incompetent, over-aggressive, unsportsmanlike driving I've seen in three seasons was worth a grand total of two race places, yet having the temerity to set a lap time in qualifying in the wrong chassis (while affecting NO ONE ELSE'S activities or results in any way, shape or form) is worthy of complete disqualification??

You might want to read the rules as they stand again. Here's a link: https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/contravene_online

Quote
...Frivolous Car Changing: Exclusion

Setting several times in various chassis.
Continually swapping between different chassis...

I'm clearly not guilty of that.

Quote
...Excessive Car Changing: Penalty 3 Places

Setting times in 3 different chassis...

Nor that.

Quote
...Simple Car Changing: Penalty 2 Places.

Setting times in 2 different chassis.
Leaving the pits in 3 or more chassis but only setting a time in one.

Avoidable Car Changing: Caution.

Setting times in 2 chassis but one was so slow to be well off the back of the grid.
Leaving the pits in 2 chassis but only setting a time in one...

So there are your choices. Please revise your report accordingly, and please try not to take four and half months this time.

Our racing rules have very recently been rewritten, and a very impressive job Phil has made of clarification.  There are also changes, and car changes during practice have seen a change in penalty.  I imagine the penalty applied here, applies to the one being used when the race was run.

Then the rules pages should have dates of validity and/or revision on them, otherwise the rest of us are just going on guesswork as to what rules we're supposed to be following, and that sure as hell ain't cricket.

edit: The mod report states: "I have no option to apply this rule as it stands and DQ him", not "as the rule may have stood at the time of the race (which no one except a moderator can verify, because the pages have possibly been changed in the intervening four and a half months and the dates and contents of said changes are hidden from the public)".

Wow! That's a stiff penalty! I remember you doing that. It irritated me slightly at the time. I'd think the worse you might get for that would be getting charged for the Matra instead of the Cooper or having your tokens set to 0 if you didn't have the funds. But that would have needed to be done shortly after the race. I don't see why you should be penalized at all unless you've been swapping cars multiple times through the season. You'd think a warning or two would suffice and later if penalties were necessary not be so steep in the beginning.

Just to clarify...I was applying the rules as they stood at the time of the race. I cannot see how I could apply a rule change retrospectively??

So it's not "as they stand" (like your(?) mod report says) but "as they (may have) stood at the time of the race, and for that, you're just going to have to take our word on it because now we're claiming that they've been changed in the interim but there's no way for you to verify that, yay transparency  Grin"?

Heavens!  Poor Deaner!  Sad

Considering the moderation report, I don't expect this will work out in his favour either...
