Without a shadow of doubt, I can thank John for that one.  Grin  Spot of role reversal.  It is usually me that messes up the oppositions chances at the start of a race to let John get away and this time he returned the favour.

I think that Matt miscalculated the length of the start-finish straight, which meant that I had to lap him on the outside of T1 and from then on I had Evil all over me like a bad suit.

SBRC locked out the first four positions so all's well that ends well!

The last few corners were a bit tight but I think that even the Mercedes management would have been happy with our efforts to share the corners without anything more than a bit of paint being needed by way of repair.

I was almost certain to win a race that didn't count towards anything but thanks to Tony for setting it up.  thumbup2

This was by far my best showing in PnG.
Thanks to John who shared a setup with the Soggies, which with a just a few very minor tweaks to suit myself, and only a few laps offline practice, was turning in 1:44's on race fuel. When Clive suggested that pole might need a 1:42, I thought , "well at least I should be somewhere in the pack and enjoy a good bit of racing".

Just for once I weakened and did a qually run on minimal fuel instead of sticking to race fuel like I normally do. To say I was surprised to get pole was an understatement, I figured that if I could get a 1:42, then there would be 3 or more doing 1:41'''s!!!

I over egged the start and wheel spin cost me 2 places before T1. Clive pulled a gap immediately and with John's Cortinny  in chase that pair threatened to run away. I was determined to hold on as long as I could and see if my pole position was a true reflection of  my pace. My smile was getting wider as I realised after a few laps that not only could I stay with the dynamic duo, but that in places I was able to close up so much on John that I had to back off. A few more laps working out where I might make a move and I was able to squeeze past John and set off after Clive, who had sneakily stretched his lead to over 3 secs.

I was slowly reeling Clive in by a couple of tenths per lap, and a quick bit of mental arithmetic told me I should be with him before the final laps. Until I made a total pratfest of the final chicane and bounced along the grass. John did not need a second invitation and  re-took 2nd spot.
I had to do it all again, but this time John was wise to where I had the advantage and despite sitting on his bootlid, he was just not taking the hint!! Then he made the same mistake that I had and bounced along the outside of the S/F straight.
From then on I just nailed it and pushed as hard as I dared to try and catch Clive..time and laps were running out. With 2 laps to go a pair of backmarkers came into play and I was able to close the last 0.5secs to the back of Clive's car.

The last lap was going to be interesting  Grin
Through the earlier laps it was apparent that Clive was quicker in the first half of the lap and I was a fraction quicker for the 2nd half. I had to start my move at the hairpin so with a good run off the previous corner I stuck it down the outside and risked everything on some late braking.
We exited the hairpin side by side, through the little Esses  side by side. Up to the final chicane and still side by side. Much exchanging of paint samples and a deft nudge from Clive's car that forced 2 of my wheels onto the grass as we hit the final straight made the difference.
0.4 secs from a win!!! I wuz robbed!!!  ninja

Grats to Clive and John for some great racing and a Soggy 1,2,3,4.

Apart from getting tangled up in the T2 catch fencing on each of the first 3 laps that was a lot of fun..!

Long battle with Doni in the Mustang, many side by side moments. Then Matt arrived to join us and things got a little more hectic - and suddenly I was ahead with a big gap. Don't know what happened, but I slowed to allow the others to catch back up.. ..but only Matt appeared. Don't know what happened to Doni, but a shame that we could not all finish. Good fun though.

Congrats podium.

Got a reasonable start and was able to get the jump on Clive into second place just behind Clive. The 'tina din't have the legs of the Alfa on the straights but I was able to hold my own in the corners and keep Clive behind for a few laps. Good gentlemanly racing from Clive, not forcing the issue where he could have done, but it was only a matter of time before the inevitable pass came though, and I was hoping to be able to hold on to the back of him and that he'd drag us both up on to Clive's tail.

It worked for a few laps until Clive's mistake at the chicane made a passing opportunity too good to miss. He was soon back on my bumper and I made it easy by catching one of those vicious kerbs a lap or two later Angry I was slightly too back to get a tow after that so Clive slowly disappeared up the road towards Clive. I was waiting for them to slow each other up so I could have a chance, but it didn't happen.

Grats Clive and, um, Clive Grin

Ahem, I promise not to do the 'Clive' joke again...

In spite of investing in a new Logitech G27 I'm still a second a lap too slow Sad

Chased Geoffers for most of the race, he'd managed to pretty much get away when he did the decent thing and fell off at the last chicane.

Work to do

Yeh, the kerbs caught me out there  Roll Eyes. Didn't seem to do anything different to other laps when I had caught the kerb on the exit, but that time the car just snapped sideways & speared into the pitlane catchfencing  Huh. Was having a good race up to then very gradually easing away from Simon. Knew I couldn't match the Alfas & John so was settling for 4th place.
Still was only a fun event, so I thought I would give Clive a chance. Grin
