Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
A clean race with only one reported incident.

Server replay time: 0h02m01s

Lap 1 - Panoramabocht - Greg Taber and N Hance

Greg puts a wheel on the grass on the exit of Tunnel Oost and spins onto the infield and up the banking on the inside of Panoramabocht. Greg slides down the banking and is powerless to prevent his car from rolling onto the racing line just as N Hance is approaching. N Hance cannot avoid Grega stricken Ferrari and contact is made. Evil Clive, Dave Rainier, Bastian Grupp and Doni Yourth were all involved in the melee but fortunately everyone could continue with no apparent damage.

There was really nothing either Greg or Norm could have done to avoid contact.

Season 28 Professionals Trophy - Round 6 – Zandvoort

On 7 August 1948, the first race was held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. Up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort.

After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

This season, races are to be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod.

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

Unlucky Rob, I think you would have had a safe 2nd today. The engine felt our pace was too hot Grin? Getting on the track early today in a new track/car combo for me meant I had enough time to fine tune the setup and get into the 26s! Felt a bit like Jim Clark battling with Dan Gurney consequently Smiley, ahead of a close chasing pack (including a young Ronnie P? Wink).

Did a clutch start, which was a bad idea as I got swamped into T1. After fending off Tris, who got alongside a few times, I could catch Rob by the end of the lap and pass on the outside into Tarzan, which was tight, but achievable, unlike trying it in the 67s laugh! This is definitely the fastest I've ever driven at Zandvoort, 100.7%. The recent oAo race really got me up to speed quickly, and the flat corners after Schievlak were a joy to drive, along with before it if done right, and the penultimate corner with the same.

After Rob retired, I could relax a bit, doing 28s when relaxing or having burned up the fronts with some 27s. Lapped Doni on the last lap, so he got to the finish line? on his dwindling fuel load and tried to chase Greg/Dave on the cool down lap angel! I regret missing Silverstone now, as I would have stood a much better chance to contend in the championship, but it's no real surprise to me to see Rob leading 65s, Tris harrying me in 66s on less races and myself leading 67s - I'd say we could each win the year we drive best in Cool!

Really pleased with my qually time but it was only good enough for 8th in this company. As a race it effectively ended when I couldn't avoid Greg T's Ferrari as it rolled back onto the track on lap one I went so far off into the soft sand that everyone was well gone by the time I was back on track. Two races running I have hit cars that have had accidents & are across the track. Its not good is it Sad. Just as I caught Bastion he went off at turn 1 & I passed but he obviously had car problems. After that it was just a matter of keeping going & watching so as not to impede the leaders. Well done the first three but that was an impressive 1st place clear of everyone.

Great pace Iestyn, despite running PR and my best pace early on race, couldn't hold on...but I tried and would keep on trying...shame the engine went so early, had taller gearings for race and didn't abuse it like in quali trim...

Second time I blow the BRM V8 this season...but it is good for tightening the championship...  angel

Sorry Norm. Sad I'm still not sure why I ended up back on the track. I didn't save my replay and considering what happened to you I don't really want to see it. I think I know why I spun in the first place but I am and was surprised I ended up back on the track in the worst place possible, at the apex on the racing line. Sad I'm not even sure where I went off the track. Was it Tunnel Oost or the turn before? I knew I had a lot of room where I went off the track and I slid a long ways but I didn't expect I'd come back onto the track like I did. I'm embarrassed and disappointed. I didn't really mind spinning like I did but I feel bad caused Norm such trouble. I'm actually very surprised I don't think any cars were retired because of my mistake. The only good thing about the whole debacle.

I'm not very comfortable with the 65s yet and relatively inexperienced, so it appears I should start at the back in these cars until I get my act together.

Btw Norm, for a while I thought your screen name was a play on the word, enhance. Smiley My apologies for doing the opposite of enhancing your racing experience. I should probably be DQed and my points given to Norm.

Nice driving at the end DaveR. I wasn't going to force the issue until possibly the last lap. Only real place I had a chance to pass was by outbraking you into Tarzan. I wanted to try to outbrake you into Tarzan on the last lap but I didn't get a good run out of Pulleveld when I needed it most. You did a good job Dave not making any big mistakes the last few laps. I was hoping you wouldn't make any mistake because you might be worried I'd be impatient. I appreciate you giving me the type of practice I need in these cars, trailing another car safely.

Congrats to all the finishers! Iestyn was exceptional! That's something that's getting common for him. Excellent job from Tristan as expected and a nice performance from Ray to nab the last podium position. Tough luck for Rob. Sad Unfortunate for most of us, that's what's needed for most of us to beat you.

Take care guys.

Greg, you went of just after Tunnel Oost as I remember it - I think you must have put your left wheels on the sand approaching the next right hander as you speared off to the right at quite some speed just before the turn in point. I suspect your slide took your up and then down the hill on the inside (right) hence where you ended up.

As for DQ'ing you you suffered a textbook racing incident, after loosing control you were a passenger so it's just poor luck that you collected Norm  Smiley

My own race went about as well as expected - the Honda has never been a fast car here for me due to the fact I've never managed to make a setup that keeps the tire temps even remotely sensible.
That said a mildly tweeked version of the setup I made for Silverstone did result in my knocking a very consistent half a second off my lap times throughout the race. Sadly I still had molten tires from lap 3 through to the end which didn't give me either the grip or the confidence to push hard enough to stay with the leading group. With the help of the draft I managed to have a very enjoyable battle with Cookie when I caught him after he suffered an off.
Unfortunately I picked the wrong side to pass a spinning back marker and ended up in the sand and lost him. All my attempts to regain the draft did was to overheat my poor tires even further and cause me to loose more time, and eventually have a few fairly minor offs.

This lead to a stressful few laps just before the end when I put myself within reach of (Dean?) until he span out of the 2nd hairpin while chasing me down.

I won't complain about 5th, better consistency on my part might have lofted me to 4th but I couldn't expect better here in the Honda. At least until I find the Holy Grail of setups that keeps tire temps down!

Well done to Iestyn, Tristan and Ronnie, also to all of the other finishers. Despite it's harshness on Japenese tires I always look forward to Zandy, but it generally attracts an inordinate number of accidents thanks to all the sand  Grin

With my tyres melting from the heat coming off your engine, staying on track started getting harder than trying to follow you,  so I decided to settle for 3rd. Great drive under pressure Tristan.
