Season 28 Historics Trophy - Round 6 - Montjuich Park

Beyond the mountains the UKGPL Historics Trophy speeds through to round 6, set in the historic parklands of Barcelona, where F1 rocked up to Montjuich Park.

Montjuich Parque is a street circuit on Montjuich mountain above Barcelona. It is a twisty tricky circuit that was the site of the tragic 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. Many drivers felt that the circuit was unsafe, and two time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi withdrew in protest before the start of the race. On lap 26 the Embassy Hill-Lola car of Rolf Stommelen left the track, killing five people. The race was subsequently stopped at half distance and half points awarded, with Jochen Mass being recorded as the winner. Lella Lombardi became the first female driver to score world championship points, taking 0.5 points for 6th place. Formula One never returned to the circuit after the accident.

This race is for cars with engines less than 3L in displacement.

Iestyn Davies & Tristan Bot are restricted to Group 1 chassis, i.e. Lotus 33 Climax or Eagle Climax.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

This season, races are to be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod.

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated from the start to the exit of Rosaleda hairpin on Lap 1.  Other moderation will be on reported incidents only, however any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

mmmm, I think the leader (Iestyn?) came round a corner to find me taking up most of the exit after a spin... apologies. As well as the fact that I thought I was in the way, and my best bet was to make some space, I also thought I had more time to achieve this...

I think I will need to give GPL a break for a bit, as the race went on I was finding it harder and harder to brake - my left ankle is still recovering from an accident. I did think this might be good recovery therapy, but clearly not ready for that yet...

My train was late as usual , no qually no set up apart from an Oulton su I had loaded from previous which was all wrong , had a bit of fun with Martin for a few laps then the lappery began , in between dodging the lappers , finally I got past him and set off as fast as 3 wheels could carry me thanks to an extra solid piece of armco which I left badly bent and with "firestone " permanently engraved on it in India Black .

Ta for the fun , grats to the pods and all who finished on this great track .

A frustrating race for me.  I got a good start and picked up a few places on the first lap thanks to a few minor skirmishes.  I held onto my place for about 5 or 6 laps until my front tyres overheated and I had no grip at all (a bit annoying as it didn't happen in praccy  Huh).  I just couldn't maintain my line up the hill and my braking was terrible.  I had to slow down a lot and I was a sitting duck  2guns

With about 8 laps to go my tyres had cooled a bit and the grip came back just in time for the leaders to start to lap me Sad

Grats to Clive on the win and commiserations to Iestyn and Tristan.  Don't know what happened but Iestyn's 3 wheeled Lotus gave me a very rare chance to pass Iestyn  laugh

No worries Colin.. if anything I thought there was more time too and got to you too fast Roll Eyes. I saw you ahead spun in the next corner and started slowing (but not very much it looks like), then when I saw you spinning it around thought 'OK, I can go around you'. If I was going a bit slower like I thought I was, it probably would have worked.

Before that, the car handled like a dream, afterwards, not so much Tongue.. managed not to get in anyone's way too much, apart from Bernie when I almost didn't see him in time as he was unlapping himself. It would have been poetic justice for him to rear end me unlapping, after I've rear ended him a few times lapping accidentally angel! Best lap on three wheels was a 1:58, and near the end I worked out I could park it at T3 and easily let cars by while doing a three point turn! laugh

My race was focused not on the road ahead, but on the road behind.  It was an unfamiliar car I'd jumped into, and with an unhappy setup, just for the Hell of it!  I must've been mad as it was a dog.

A lack of pace meant my mirrors were empty, except for a lone Bernie, kindly placed there after an early mistake.  As he closed up, we were both placed under lappery.  It became a matter of, spot the Bernie Braby, amongst the queue of Brabham clones, the rules allow to all run together.  Blue flags were no help against a sneak attack in close company.  Pribluda would have added to the unrealism.  So I could only guess at which upcoming mirrored clone was the enemy!

An extra wide line at the tight hairpin, and I brushed a bale, while watching a lone Eagle fly past.  Steering was damaged, and Bernie was by and waving bye bye.  Parked it before anything major fell off!  Sad

As I had not practiced for this race ( but at least I knew the circuit quite well) I chose my favourite 2 litre car and grabbed a Monaco setup. Reversing the cambers and tweaking of the gears got it working well and on race fuel I put it as high as 2nd in quali behind the flying Iestyn. Tris decided that 2nd place should be his and took that place before the end of quali, so I started 3rd with what was probably a faster car than the Lotii ahead.

I may have a faster car, but finding a place to make it count around this track is like passing at Monaco. I was easily able to climb all over Tristan's gearbox, but he was pushing hard and did not make any errors big enough to leave a gap. Meanwhile, Iestyn was creeping away.  After several laps of trying to provoke an error I had over heated my tyres and that, combined with an over zealous downshift over the jump to T1 spun me around and gave Tris a breather. Just to be sure he got his breath back I did it again on the next lap!!!!  Roll Eyes

Slowly I reeled him back in, and then we passed a stricken Iestyn so it was battle on for 1st and 2nd. With about 10 laps to go I was getting back into attack range and being very careful with my tyres and downshifts. Then, just when I thought things would get interesting, Tris had a half spin at T1 and stopped sideways across the track......"thank you very much" I thought and shot through the gap.
I fully expected Tris to wring the neck of that Lotus and come back at me, but he vanished from my mirrors and Prib.  So it was a cruise to the flag with Axel a very safe distance back in 2nd spot.

Reading the reports above it seems that Iestyn was very unfortunate and that Tris blew his engine. hard luck guys, but at least it has made the top of the table a little closer  Wink
