Moderator's Report

Summary

Greg starts from the pole, but runs a little wide at the exit of turn one. Clive takes the inside line through turn one and moves into the lead. Clive straddles the curb entering turn two causing him to slow more than normal. Greg brakes earlier than normal but not early enough. The result is a major pile up in turn two on lap one. Piero and Greg escape into the distance while everyone else has to wait for the track to be cleared. Later on the first lap, one driver gets it wrong through the chicane, and several other cars have no chance to avoid. Piero leads the first twelve laps of the race, and Greg is close behind. Piero’s engine expires; giving the lead to Greg. Piero stays in second place, and Tim closes the gap with ten laps to go. Tim attempts an overtake on the inside of Piero at Gazometre on lap 29, but does not have the momentum down the start/finish straight. Greg gives up the lead on the last lap when he pulls into a pit box to retire just before crossing the finish line. All of the track marshals start waving their flags even though the leader has not crossed the line. Piero brakes early for the last corner, and Tim makes contact with him. Luckily, Piero is able to continue to the finish line winning the 69 Extra Trophy at Monaco! Tim finishes second and claims the fast lap honors. Clive finishes third after an eventful race.

Server replay time: 0h01m06s

Lap 1 – Turn 2 – Collision between the leaders at Massenet. Evil Clive is in the lead, and GregT is following in the uphill Beau Rivage. Clive drives over the curbing on the right to give room for Greg. As a result of going over the curbs, Clive gets sideways at corner entry causing him to slow more than normal. Greg brakes earlier than normal, but he does not slow down enough to avoid contact. It looks like Greg tries to take a little curb on the left to avoid Clive, but there is nowhere to go. Greg’s right front makes contact with Clive’s left rear tire. The contact turns Clive 90 degrees. Then Greg’s car drives under Clive, and he continues with no loss of time. Clive and five others use a shift-R. Thirteen drivers are involved in the pileup. Greg retires from the race just before crossing the finish line. He effectively gave himself a five position penalty.

From the rule book, the following car is responsible for maintaining a safe gap and the driver needs to be cognizant of the possibility of the lead car slowing for no apparent reason. Despite the obvious transgression, Greg did brake earlier than normal, he tried to move to the left to avoid contact, and ultimately he decided to give himself the penalty before the finish of the race.

Server replay time: 0h01m09s

Lap 1 – Turn 2 – Tim Muttrum uses a shift-R at Massenet, but does not remember to take his stop & go until lap 13. Tim did the noble thing, and he reported his mistake.

As a moderator, I wish that I had some leeway to reduce the penalty. However, the division specific rules on the championship standings page state that "No Stop n Go within 2 laps = DQ. The division specific rule takes precedence over the UKGPL rule book. See Introduction on rules page which states: "Please Note: The Division Specific rules normally complement the Generic rules but where clashes or contradictions exist, the Division Specific rules will always take precedence over the Generic rules."

Server replay time: 0h02m22s

Lap 1 – Chicane du Port – Tim Muttrum does not see the first yellow flag. He does see the yellow flag just before chicane, but he does not have time to slow at that point. He made a glancing contact with Dave Rainier and Axel Cookie which didn’t seem to cause damage but rotated Axel enough to cause him to drive into Martin Hunt and Phil Thornton’s paths and cause a 2nd accident.

The yellow flags were clearly visible. The approaching driver was unsighted because of circuit topography. The cars from the incident were moving. The approaching driver slowed down but contact was made with the cars from the incident.

Server replay time: 0h17m01s

Lap 12 – Turn 2 – Marco Mercaldo runs wide at Massenet. Marco's car is against the guard rail for the middle part of the corner. Evil Clive sees an opportunity to overtake. Marco is able to extricate himself from the wall just as Clive pulls alongside. The gap that was wide enough for a truck to drive through has now shrunk to just the left side of the track. On one hand, Clive did not slow down or give enough room for Marco, but on the other, Marco's line through the corner lured Clive in for an overtake. Clive and Marco have side by side contact causing Marco to use a shift-R.

Monaco is very narrow, and it is difficult to make a clean overtake here. The rule book calls this a Contested Side by Side Contact. In a corner, after a legitimate overtaking attempt the cars end up side by side. Both drivers move over instead of staying on their own side of the track. Contact is made.

Well, after all my escapades this race I can conclude the BRM is made of granite. I think I had the most spectacular crash in the lap 1 shenanigans  Grin. Amazingly the car was still drivable and landed in the direction I intended to travel which promoted me to an undeserved 3rd. A couple more errors and a general lack of pace meant Tim and Clive passed me by half race distance, demoting me to 5th. That became 4th after Greg's generosity.

This race I was seriously lacking in pace. I even practiced a bit for this event  Undecided. Seems I still haven't quite unlocked the driving style required to get the most out of these cars. Pleased to have finished the race at least. Congrats to all finishers  Smiley.

All right this time! I was terrified of causing an accident altrp that regularly occurred. Shocked

As always I left hoping to get to the end and once again in the last corner I almost did not see the checkered flag.

I was convinced to have reached 2, instead I won!

How lucky!

Hello and thanks to all

Some cracking times set up front at this one, I was in the mix but not with the first four, qualifying 5th, a second behind Tim...but I only started practicing half an hour before qual, so couldn't be too disappointed.

Unfortunately whilst I could see the T2 carnage I didn't manage to avoid it.  This was probably impossible with almost a full grid bearing down, had I have slowed more I'd have been shunted for sure so aimed for a gap instead which disappeared!!  I reset then had to bulldoze through to carry on.  I was the one that clipped the chicane later on on L1, sorry for that, sent me spinning then others collected me.  I think I got going dead last after that but had some fun overtaking others.  At one point I challenged Dave Curtis after the chicane and was surprised how late you braked, but then you lost it and collected me, no worries though.

I carried on until I caught Bastian who caught me off guard by slowing quite a bit for the chicane, obliging me to lift as my car crested the rise and went light.  The car then drifted right and I ended up stuck in the straw bales.  Quite a soft way to end.  Had some fun though.

Cheers,

Bob

About to submit my incident(s) reports, mostly appertaining to my belated SnG but also to the snowplough incident at the chicane on L1 where I couldn't stop/slow anywhere near enough on time, so a few of you will probably get notifications caused by that one.

I haven't submitted a report on this one but can if you would like - this is partly because you were able to continue and finish ahead after I waited, and secondly because I hit you after you changed your braking point on the final lap by the distance of two trees before the bridge (I checked to make sure I hadn't imagined it) compared to the previous 10 laps I'd been following you; It was unexpected and I had no-where to go. As I said earlier I'm sorry for hitting you but certainly from my client replay I wasn't left much choice.

Glad you were able to finish Smiley

How lucky!l
I wouldn't say lucky, you drove a great race Piero.  Steady start and kept out of trouble.  The secret at Monaco is to qualify well, just as in real life.  You did just that.

I haven't responded to the incident report or do I want to. I'd prefer to respond here where everybody can read it.

First, I apologize again. Second, there is little if any defense for what I did. I do have an excuse though. Smiley I couldn't watch three things at once like I needed. I was never able to look back or at Prib to determine where Piero was. I was too busy looking at the wall on my left and Clive ahead on the right. I braked a little earlier than I usually would but waited as long as I thought was possible. I could have and should have slowed sooner but I thought Piero might be closer than he was. Had Clive not clipped the curb on the right and made a sloppy entrance into the left hander we may have avoided the collision but ultimately the responsibility was mine to prevent the collision. I'm a bit disappointed I got overwhelmed by too many things to do at once.

I felt bad about what I did to Clive immediately. I didn't realize the true extent of the damage I had done until well after the race. I was tempted to immediately slow until Clive could pass me but then I thought that could possibly cause more incidents so I should just drive and see if I can take the lead from Piero. I kept my eye out for Clive hoping he could move back into 2nd. Once he did I had every intention of giving him the lead again and see if I could take it legitimately.

I penalized myself by stopping before the checkered flag but if it's deemed necessary to punish me further, so be it.
