Moderator's Report

Summary

Mosport is a very unforgiving track. So surviving until the finish is the primary challenge. The drivers started the race sensibly, and the red zone was clean. Two cars ran wide on the first turn, perhaps to leave as much room as possible while racing side by side. Throughout the race, a number of cars had minor contact while overtaking another driver. Doni and Greg both started near the front, but they lost valuable track position after suffering misfortunes. That made it a little easier for Tim (FullMetalGasket). Tim started from pole, lead every lap, claimed the fastest lap, and won the race! The second place finisher was Sam Blood. Sam had the highest percentage of on track laps. Ronniepeterson was also able to finish on the podium. Ronnie had to battle back from a blown engine on lap six. Twelve drivers were able to cross the finish line.

Server replay time: 0h05m18s

Lap 4 – Turn 2 – Clayton - Rear end shunt. Dean is contemplating overtaking Phil in turn one and turn two. Phil can no longer see Dean in his mirror. Phil slows more than normal so that he can hug the left side of the track. Dean decides to be cautious on cold tires. Doni makes up a huge amount of ground to catch the pair at the entrance of turn two. Doni is caught out by the rapid closing rate. Doni rear ends Dean. Dean flips over, and he uses a valuable shift-R.

The victim was in full control but braked early compared with the average for the division. The shunter had not followed the victim at a safe distance for a lap or two. The shunter was in full control.

Server replay time: 0h08m38s

Lap 6 – Turn 5 - Moss Corner - Ambitious Overtake. Marco misses the apex of Moss. Doni sees a gap mid corner. Doni pulls alongside at the exit of 5A corner. Doni is not able to hold the inside line of the corner, and his left front bumps Marco's right rear. Marco's car flips.

The overtaking car had NOT achieved a 50% or greater overlap at the point of turn-in. There was no loss of control by either driver. Penalty for overtaking driver.

Server replay time: 0h13m46s

Lap 10 – Turn 3 - Quebec Corner – Bad rejoin. Bob spins off the track, and his car comes to a stop just off the track surface. He may have tried to spin the car back in the correct direction, but instead, the car slowly turns accross the race track at the same moment Andreas is exiting turn three. Andreas had no time to avoid. Andreas and Bob are able to continue in the race.

Bob should have turned his car around off track, and then wait for a gap to rejoin carefully and gradually. It is the responsibility of the any driver who is returning to the track to make sure they do not interfere with other drivers. Rejoining drivers should stay off the racing line and give way to faster cars until they are fully up to speed.

Server replay time: 0h13m59s

Lap 10 - Turn 4 - Side by side contact. Bob is recovering from a bad rejoin, and is 60 mph slower than normal. Dean sees Bob at the exit of turn three. Bob is glued to the right edge of the track, and it looks like an easy overtake. However, Bob is accelerating very fast, and Dean is not able to achieve much overlap before the turn in point. Bob does not see Dean, and he turns into turn four causing contact with Dean's right rear tire. Dean has to retire.

Both drivers needed to use more caution. I can not blame Dean for making his move because the overtake looked very inviting. However, in hindsight, perhaps an overtake here was too ambitious because he was too far back. I beleive that Bob made an honest mistake because it is difficult to check your mirrors and prib while between corner three and four at Mosport. However, if in doubt drivers should always leave room.

Server replay time: 0h42m34s

Lap 31 – Turn 3 - Quebec Corner - Mild warp incident under braking. There are two laps to go, and Andreas is chasing Phil for 9th place. Marco is following this battle closely. Phil is able to see Andreas in his mirror. So Phil takes his normal line into turn three. Andreas thinks that Phil might leave the door open. So Andreas goes for it. Andreas tries to overtake under braking, but he has to lock the brakes when Phil shuts the door. Andreas spins on his own under braking. He is dangerously close to Phil, and a little warp contact causes Phil to spin as well. Marco had no where to go, and he ran into Phil. Phil's car flips, and he has to use a shift-R. Phil looses two positions.

On the server replay, there was no visible contact between Phil and Andreas. The two cars did come very close to each other, but I do not think that the collision boxes would have touched had there not been any lag. However, on Phil's replay, Andreas' car makes an erratic movement into his gearbox causing him to spin. The UKGPL rules describe this as mild warp under braking. This is considered a Warp incident caused by careless driving because the following car was driving inches from the gearbox of the leading car for a protracted length of time. The penalty is reduced to a warning because it was nearly a genuine warp incident.

Season 28 – Round 8 - 69 Extra Trophy - Mosport

For round 8 we visit Mosport. The first ever Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham.  The circuit was used again in 1969 in a race won by Jackie Ickx.  Jackie Stewart crashed out after tangling with a back marker.  More like something you would find in a GPL race than a real F1 event!.

69X use the 60fpsV1 patch.

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You can do 1 shift+r with a consecutive stop and go in the pits !

Handicapping
Drivers will have a free car choice
BUT
For the Light drivers: Each car can be driven only once in this season!

Driver lists and explicit rules can be found on the championship page

Race List =   IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 28-06-2015
Qualification Time   = ~20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Track = Mosport
Variant = 69X
Damage Model = INT
Race length = ~50 min -> 38 laps
Replay = you will get here

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be to the exit of Moss on the first lap . Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 30 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 25 mins of qualifying left.

I recomment for drivers with low spec pc's to use the original Papy track version for 60fps online races!

WE WILL USE a PASSWORD for the TRAINING SERVER! = 60fpsV1

Tonight could be quite quiet by the end of the race!
I've just spent some time working on a few setups (I won't have time immediately before the race) and what can I say? I thought Mosport was hard to drive fast on in a '67!
With the added speed into Moss corner it's nor near suicidal!  Grin

What a dismal result!  Sad

Apologies to a number of members for assorted knerfs.  Greg, Dean and a couple of others, too.

I'm not too keen on this series and have been larking about a bit.  The car restriction and reset aren't my cup of tea.  I'll be standing down for the balance of the season.

Excellent race for me. A bit lacking in entertainment perhaps, but Mosport is so difficult to overtake it tends to be follow-the-leader until someone investigates the scenery  Roll Eyes.

Somehow managed 4th on the grid which became 2nd in the race after Greg & Doni's early tangle. Had Ronnie briefly nipping at my heels until he lost it at Moss corner. From then on it was a lonely drive to the flag, lapping the odd backmarker here and there.

Big congrats to Tim for a brilliant drive and to everyone else that finished  Smiley.

Another crazy day at the races!

Congrats Tim and Sam! That was a thorough butt kicking you gave us!

Donnie, I thought you were supposed to get more mellow and patient with age. You might do a little better if you didn't try to play so tough with us.

I probably should have tried harder in qualifying. It looks like my best plan would have been to Q 2nd and hope I could stay in Tim's tow long enough to get away from Donnie and Sam. There wasn't much way for me to do it otherwise, especially before my tires heated.

I couldn't pass anybody except the 4wd cars and they weren't easy to pass. Phil was 2-3 seconds slower per lap than me but I couldn't really find a place to pass him. One ill conceived attempt at the end of the back straight almost ended in disaster. I tried to back out of the attempt but it was too late. I was airborne at that point and the brakes did nothing. When I landed with the brakes applied it sent me off the right side of the track. Luckily they slowed me enough that when I slid back across the track Phil was already into the turn. Luckily when I caught Phil again, he made a mistake that let me by easily. Clive made it easy for me too with his mistake. I just barely got by Piero and Andreas never tried to make it difficult for me.

I'm glad I'm not the villian this week. After the disasters I caused at Monaco and Monza, I was particularly careful and patient this time until near the end of the race. Even so, I still got too close to Phil at least twice and Marco once.

Thanks guys. See you next time.

You know, if I had the time...and inclination...to respond to these slings and arrows, I'd tear up a few members here.

Suffice to say that in each and every incident that I was involved in, I was NOT the instigator.  OPEN YOUR EYES!

I only fell back because my engine blew and I simply had to take a shift-r and trip into the pits. Otherwise you were looking at third at best last night Samb Roll Eyes Only joking. I had good pace but only for third spot. At least after the engine went and the pit stop I had some good racing with Piero and Dave.

Grats again to yourself and Tim. Commiserations to the contenders who fell by the wayside. Better luck next time.

Marco, Doni  Please report any incidents you are concerned about to the moderators using the link under the results table above.  This is the best way to sort things out amicably.  Swearing is not allowed on the forums under any circumstances.

Yes I saw you loose it in my mirrors and I was amazed you didn't collect me.

Lucky for you but not for me Wink.  Good racing, I always make mistakes Sad.  So getting past is just a matter of patience.

I seem to set my car up with less wing than most.  That makes my lap times a bit slower but it means I am very hard to pass because of the straight line speed.  When I did get overtaken I found it easy to catch up on the straights but I was left for dead in the corners.  The extra wing effectively cancels out the draft.

Yes, good racing with Piero and Ronnie.
Thanks to Piero, to let me overtake without trying to block me in the long straight.
Logically the Matra MS80 had more speed than the Lotus 63.

After that, I was the first surprised to be 3rd during several laps.
But Ronnie rejoin me and overtook when I made a little mistake.

4th is my best result of the season with these 69X.
