Moderator's Report

Summary

Sam started on pole followed by Greg and Axel. There were two incidents in the red zone. This allowed Sam, Greg and Dean to break away from the field after only the first lap. There were some great battles throughout the field. Sam was the leader for the first 24 laps. Greg was able to overtake him on lap 14, but he fell off track on the same lap. Greg was a little quicker today, and he retook the lead on lap 25, led the remainder of the laps and won the race. Sam finished second after a very well run race. Dean was third, and he did a good job pressuring the leaders.

Server replay time: 0h00m57s

Lap 1 – Turn 3 – Red Zone - Rear end shunt. Axel was too fast out of T2 and drifting to the right side where this infamous armco sits. Axel had to lift and this caught out Dean following him. Dean rear ends Axel, and is able to keep going. Axel spins and looses a wheel. Tim mentioned/reported he was rearended in the aftermath of Axel/Dean incident but it has to be a consequence of the initial incident. When you are accelerating in a curvy part it's very hard to anticipate slow cars or wrecks.

The victim was in full control but braked early compared with the average for the division. The shunter had not followed the victim at a safe distance for a lap or two. The shunter was in full control. The victim stated that he prefer that no penalty is given. However this is a red zone incident. Eight cars were affected, and four had to use a shift-R. So there will be a penalty, but it will be reduced to only one place even though it is the red zone.

Server replay time: 0h01m25s

Lap 1 – Back straight near the loop (turn 4) - Red zone - Rear end shunt - Piero and Tim both recovered from the first incident. Tim rejoined slightly behind but with the jump on Piero. Tim moved to the right. He pulled alongside Piero. Piero did not see Tim in his mirror, and he moved to the right also. Tim had to put two wheels on the grass to avoid contact. Piero was able to pull ahead of Tim now. Piero braked shortly after Tim regained control on the tarmac. Piero was in the middle of the track. Tim had no chance of avoiding him at this point. Tim's left front touched Piero's right rear. Both cars spun without hitting or damaging anything. In hindsight, Tim only needed to wait for Piero to make his stop & go to overtake him.

In all cases, the following car is responsible for maintaining a safe gap and the driver needs to be cognizant of the possibility of the lead car slowing for no apparent reason. In this scenario, the victim was in full control but braked early compared with the average for the division. The shunter had not followed the victim at a safe distance for a lap or two. The shunter had lost control on the approach to the braking zone and consequently braked later than intended. The 1 + 1 penalty for being in the redzone is reduced because Tim was not in full control, and the consequences this time were minor.

Season 28 – Round 9 - 69 Extra Trophy - Watkins Glen

For round 9 we visit Watkins Glen. After the 65s on Tuesday we take the 3L winged cars to find the limits...

69X use the 60fpsV1 patch.

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You can do 1 shift+r with a consecutive stop and go in the pits !

Handicapping
Drivers will have a free car choice
BUT
For the Light drivers: Each car can be driven only once in this season!

Driver lists and explicit rules can be found on the championship page

Race List =   IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 12-07-2015
Qualification Time   = ~20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Track = Watkins Glen
Variant = 69X
Damage Model = INT
Race length = ~50 min -> 44 corrected! laps
Replay = you will get here

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be to the exit of the Loop on the first lap . Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 30 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 25 mins of qualifying left.

I recomment for drivers with low spec pc's to use the original Papy track version for 60fps online races!

WE WILL USE a PASSWORD for the TRAINING SERVER! = 60fpsV1

I've been practising for this one, but I wish I could have a "Caution - slow vehicle" sticker on the back of my car!  Due to my rustiness (and my button brake), I am probably braking a lot earlier than everyone else, so please be careful in the unlikely event that I might be in front of you.  Roll Eyes

The password is right at the top of this thread/page.

But don't sweat it, there will be plenty of opportunities to race another night, where you will surely witness some quality driving like the start of this one  laugh  laugh laugh

Good luck to everyone still running.

Good grief that was hard work! Managed to bag my first pole for a while, and proceeded to have a terrific battle with Greg for the first third of the race and Dean was somehow keeping up in the wingless Lotus.

It was obvious that Greg was faster in race trim and he was all over my gearbox. He made his move after roughly 10 laps into the Loop and took the lead. But, it didn't last as he spun on the last bend a lap later. I couldn't quite avoid the sideways Matra and collected Dean in the process  Sad. At least we were all able to continue. Greg once again demonstrating his greater speed, caught me up after not-too-many laps and overtook me into the Loop once more. Instead of sensibly backing off I went into the Loop side-by-side with Greg and of course got me rear wheel onto the grass  Roll Eyes. Thankfully, I didn't rip a wheel off and tried in vain to catch Greg. Dean was all over my car's backside but he couldn't find a way through either.

Alas, I simply couldn't catch Greg. I remained 4-5 seconds off the lead and simply couldn't close the gap. Big congrats to Greg for a terrific win, and to Dean for a masterful effort in the Lotus to claim 3rd. Congrats to all finishers Smiley.

This PW is only for the practice!
For the race we have an extra PW that shows in the headlines some hours before the race Wink

Had an exiting race after the T3 chaos. Had to s+r and s+g, then on 9th.
Was catching all but the first 3, whose pace was the same... Grin

Oh, I would soooo like to take credit for that (and claim a WR by over two seconds).  Grin

But I was in the 49B, not the 49. I just chose the Italian GP graphics (where they ran wingless, apparently) for visibility's sake, so the wings are there as far as the physics is concerned.

As for the first lap contact, sorry to Cookie and others involved (which is pretty much everyone, except for Andreas and Evil, good job avoiding the worst, guys). I had no time to react to you being slower than expected, and didn't think I was that close. Report will be filed, and off to the principal's office I go...  Embarrassed

Congratulations Sam and Dean!

That was a lucky win. The top 4 qualifiers all had the speed for a possible win. I didn't think anybody could get away from me as long as I didn't make a mistake. And I knew I couldn't get away from the other 3 without breaking the tow.

After the early accident left Sam and me alone at the front, I tried to follow Sam as closely as possible down the straights. I was hoping it might increase his top speed so we could get away from Dean. I didn't want to attempt a pass until we were well ahead of Dean. It didn't seem to work. Around lap 10 when Dean was closing on us, I realized we were a little slower than I had been practicing on race fuel. That's when I realized I should have passed Sam earlier when one of his exits from the esses was a little ragged. All I could do was take away the inside entering the Loop. Once I got another opportunity I went for it. It's a shame that the my first time into the 90, without Sam in front to temper my entry, I spun. Sad Sam and Dean had no where to go. My apologies. I could have been greedy and tried to use the accident to retake the lead but I waited to see that both of you got going again. I was relieved to see you both carry on. That gave me the opportunity to see if I was a little faster as I had begun to think I was. It didn't take long to get in Dean's slipstream. As I had almost closed the gap Dean spun in the Loop. I was a little late to lift so I couldn't quite scrub off enough speed to keep from bumping Dean. Luckily it seemed to have little effect on either of us. Now was my chance to see if I could catch Sam. When I caught Sam, I didn't wait long to attempt a pass. I didn't want to give Dean another chance to catch us/me. It's a shame I couldn't make a better pass. The second time I denied Sam the inside into the Loop he lost it. I felt bad thinking Sam had wrecked because I didn't get my braking and line as well as I had done before. Once again I was relieved to see Sam hold 2nd place. I thought about slowing down but then I thought Sam is about as far behind me as I was behind him earlier. So I pushed on, interested in seeing if Sam had the pace to catch me. I thought you might be able to get in my slipstream. While also thinking that if you do, it's going to set you up for some very impressive lap times. I held the gap at about 4 seconds for a few laps and then slowly extended it.

I had another scare late in the race lapping Tim and Bastian. Tim let me by easily and I caught Bastian entering the Loop. Bastian slid wide and I tried to get inside but my car kept sliding to the left. I had to slow so much to keep from hitting Bastian that it almost got Tim out of shape. Sorry Tim.

I was flying on the last lap. I got a good tow from Piero. I wasn't expecting him to let me pass. When he moved over near the pit entrance, I went into the 90 too fast once again. Since I had ruined what looked like a great lap, I slowed to let Piero by, so he could complete another lap. The only reason I came up on you so fast Piero was my sector times indicated a possible 1:00.87. I didn't really want to lap you while at the same time I wanted a faster lap.

Thanks guys. That was good fun.
