Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy - Round 4 – Aintree

The Joe Shaw Memorial trophy is being contested of six rounds on classic British tracks using the original 1967 car set. Round 5 will be staged at Aintree, which hosted several British GP’s until 1962. It is the longest track we will use for this series. Pro rules apply but the competition is open to all comers. To even up the competition a little the following voluntary handicap system is proposed;
Privateers drivers – no handicap
Works drivers – no Lotus or Eagle
Fastest Works drivers – Honda, Cooper of BRM

The races will be held each Sunday & Tuesday for 3 weeks commencing Sunday 9th August, finishing on the 25th. The track list is Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Donnington, Castle Coombe, Aintree & Goodwood.

Points will be awarded according to historic GP scoring, 9 for 1st, 6 for 2nd,  4 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, 2 for 5th & 1 for 6th.

Moderation will be for reported incidents only.

I may not make this - I'm at a trackday at Rockingham over the weekend and don't know if I'll be back in time on Sunday.
If I do miss it I hope you all have fun  Smiley

Actually a very nice track - I've not driven it for a good few years.  However, I have a question to ask the experienced amongst us: it's another track with a lot of +90 degree bends.  I'm always unsure about apexes - should it be early, late, or even two apexes?  How do you all approach it?

Something done by professional racers, if they haven't a friend with a high-tech simulator, is to find a foe during race practice, and follow them.  Works best if foe is fast and friendly.  Many at Ukgpl are, and Cookie usually makes a friendly practice Server.   So perhaps some advice will arrive here, and some unspoken advice will zip past you there. TBH I have yet to practise for this race, looks like I did some laps in 2001/2002 or so but can't remember...

In general it just depends on the type of corners, the sequence of corners etc. Mostly the shortest line is the fastest, but sometimes you can opt for a wider line straigthening out the exit...as long you overall gain it's the best option...in 90 degree turns the apex is right in the middle in theory, but it depends also what comes after...

In Surtees at Brands you have a double apex, early and late, going a bit wider midcorner...but TBH for better racing lines you need to ask Iestyn, or even Greg who run better lines than me...

...I'm always unsure about apexes...

Adding to what the others have said, it also depends on camber, elevation changes, and car (whether you'll get better exit speed by carrying speed through, or "squaring it off" to get your turning done sooner to get back on the gas earlier), and probably most important, what follows after. I learned (somewhere along the way) to determine the "importance" of a corner by the length of the straight bit that follows: a corner leading onto a long straight should get more of your attention (and set-up tweaking) than one which immediately flows into another corner.

Overall, I've found that my best results occur when I simply keep the pointy end facing roughly forwards for the entire duration of the event.  Roll Eyes

Looks like sound advice from Rob and Dean.

the "importance" of a corner by the length of the straight bit that follows: a corner leading onto a long straight should get more of your attention (and set-up tweaking) than one which immediately flows into another corner.

I don't think I consciously think about that much. I'd be surprised if I've never done it though. Thanks Dean, that's a good thing to keep in mind.

or even Greg who run better lines than me...

Do i? Maybe that's the only reason I can stay close sometimes. I do have to tell myself to go "slower" occasionally because just a slight bit of pushing the car can cut into my lap times significantly.

Ronnie, the only turn I'd consider a double apex on this track is the combination of Canal and Bechers Bend. I'm often wide on my apex at Canal. I make sure I get my apex at Bechers Bend close, following Dean's thinking, to carry as much speed as possible onto the back straight.

If you err, I'd recommend a late apex. I'll carry too much speed into a turn and enter wide. That forces me to use a late apex (somewhere well into the second half of the turn) but keeps me from losing much exit speed. An early apex, and I'm totally screwed. It means I braked too early or didn't carry enough speed into the turn. I'm already losing time doing that, plus on the exit I'm going to have to slide the car more to keep from running wide thus losing more time. Plus an early apex will cut your exit speed. That's my experience. Others may differ.

This is a fairly simple track so the only turns where you are setting up the car for the next turn is from Melling Crossing to the slight bend to the left before Tatts. This is the big problem with Targa Florio. I know all the turns now but I need to be able to "see" two to three turns in advance to situate the car properly from one turn to the next.

Engine went sick before I crossed the S/F line on lap 1. Apologise to Ronnie if I caught you out between T1 & T2 - took me a while to work out the car was knackered. Stupid game!

Decent qual (knocked a second off my previous PB here) and start, though had to stay wide in 1 and 2 because I thought Bob might be sticking his nose in. Got that sorted, then lap 2 Rob goes off (wait, that doesn't happen... wth) leaving me P2 with a disappearing Tris ahead, fairly big gap behind so slip into "just keep this together" mindset, reel off a couple more, and then...

Stupid Repco went into "silent mode" on lap 5. Not the good "silent mode" like in Knight Rider where you can sneak up on the bad guys, but the other one where the car goes slower and slower and then stops. Bah.

Hey Billy, I could see your engine was kaput, but I couldn't get past - then you slowed rapidly, and I caught you - sorry.  I bent my front right wheel, and for the rest of the race I was fighting for control with a 400hp beast which couldn't turn left!  It was the hardest 7th place I've ever battled for.  I was willing someone else to crash out so I might get a point!  Grin  Apologies to another Brabham who I also tagged when they were rejoining after spinning off.

Congrats to Robert Fleurke and other the podium guys and all the finishers, that was great Smiley

I'm pleased to get classified although the car broke because I damaged it. A real shame as after some early difficulty I had got a good rhythm going and then made a silly mistake.

Really looking forwards to the last round on Tuesday Eve.

Thanks again to everybody who has taken part in the JSMT this year thus far.

Regards

Where is the classificationfor this trophy?

Billy has posted the standings after Castle Combe in that thread:

Quote
Points score after 4 rounds, including Castle Combe
1st - Rob Fleurke - 31 pts
2nd - Iestyn - 15 pts
3rd - Cookie - 14 pts
4th - FMG - 13 pts
5th - Doni - 9 pts
6th Pelle - 5 pts
7th - Magic Arsouille - 4 pts
8th - Evil - 3 pts
8th - Ronnie P - 3 pts
10th - Baab - 2 pts
11th Samb - 1 pt

Rob can clinch the series at Aintree.

So Fran, you can add points for todays race (9-6-4-3-2-1), you do the math!  Wink

Had only little practise but the more laps, the better it went. Sorry to Phil for ending his qualifying run, simply missed my brakemarker, no excuse. For the rest there was a lot of traffic. Towards the end improved and just got P2.

Was able to hold P2 after the start, but on Lap 2 had a lapse and went straight through at Country, losing a lot of time and trackposition, but the car was still OK I think...then found a good rhythm and had to be patient when catching up with a car in front. Phil and Andy were really courteous, thanks. Caught up with Iestyn who started to turn up a notch. After a few laps he made a mistake into Waterway, made a great save, but lost momentum. This allowed me to go to the inside and passing him at Anchor Crossing. Then pushed a bit more, but Iestyn almost matched me. Tristan then was gone from the pitboard, bad luck again.

Last lap had to make a decision to lap Andreas pushing it through at Cottage, hope you understand my unpatience.

My mistake made for a inspired drive to make the best out of it, and always good to beat the likes of Iestyn, even in a better car. Wink Well done mate, and Andy as well. Also good job Phil, Fran and Andreas finishing in the points. Not too many finishers sadly, a lot of problems and attrition it seems. Commiserations!

Good to see Malcolm again, and improving! Smiley

Thanks for racing all, and see you at Goodwood for the final race of the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy! Fingers crossed we don't get mass disco's, but it's a calculated risk taken since the Trophy is being awarded at the Goodwood Revival. Knock on wood.

PS: Aintree is a great track with a lot of character. Great corners. It might be something for next season Works.
