Season 29 Historic Trophy - Round 3 – Spa

The third race in the Historic series takes us to Spa. Classic track, new layout for GPL. This is the long awaited update to the Papy original. Perhaps THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Please note: We will not use the original Papyrus version of the circuit, we will use the version released in December 2014 by the Spa67 Team.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

All races will be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod.

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

This race is for cars with 3 Litre engines.

Got home in time from work but it seems I'm not registered yet so can't see the password. Maybe just as well since I'm a bit knackered Cheesy .

I qualified well but felt 'off balance' the entire meet.  A fitting end, then, to prune off a corner on a tree in Blanchimont.  Sad

Carry on, gang...

laugh laugh I literally started falling asleep with two laps to go in a safe second place when one more closing of the eyes ended my race  laugh laugh

Grats I assume to Axel on the win (great pace in that Ferrari) and Andreas and Dave (I think). Stay awake guys.

Commiserations to Doni and Tristan who had problems earlier. See you all at the next one after a good nights sleep  laugh laugh

I wasn't expecting much this race. Hadn't managed any practice whatsoever and joined the session with only 5 minutes to spare. What could possibly go wrong?  Roll Eyes

Using a hastily modified Steve Cloyd setup, I binned it on my only practice lap which wasn't a good omen and when the race began, I realised the gearing was compromised on some of the corners which didn't help the McLaren's lack of straight line speed. But if I just kept the car on the black stuff I felt I could bag a half decent result.

Doing my best impression the 2015 McLaren package I was no match for any of the cars out there, also in part due to my shoddy driving  Wink. I did spin twice at Eau Rouge, but just about managed to get away with it. Due to the misfortune of others, when the flag dropped I managed to pick up an undeserved 4th.

Congrats to Axel, Andreas and Dave for their podium positions  Smiley.

Very difficult when driving only the 312 in 66.

I tried a skingley setup for the cooper when i switched back to default setup short before the race.

I managed to get half distance, when hitting an Armco railend and going off in the forrest, killing my car.

Best car for best track Grin
That's the plan...

Had lowered the ride height to min in quali and forgot to raise it for the race, so I had 2 scary moments in EauRouge Roll Eyes
So I tip-toed the rest of the race through it.

Shame Tris and Doni got lost
