Season 29 - Friday Sport Cars Trophy - Round 6 - Laguna Seca

The next race will be at Laguna Seca  in sunny California.
Laguna Seca was built in 1957 after the nearby Pebble Beach Road Races (another track used by UKGPL) were abandoned for being too dangerous.  The first race, held on November 9, 1957, was won by Pete Lovely driving a Ferrari 500 TR Sports Car.  Several Trans-Am races have been held at Laguna Seca but Formula 1 races were never held there.  The track has frequently been used for motorcycle races most notably the AMA Superbike Series, World Superbikes and MotoGP.

In S29 we will race F2 and Sport Car mods alternating.
This Trophy is intented as a fun series, so keep the fairness high and respect drivers with different skills.  Wink

Handicapping:
Heavies - have allways free car choice.
Lights   -  each F2 car can be used only once! Only one GT can be used twice!
Any illegal use of a car will be a DQ! So make shure you have a plan Wink

Drivers must complete 50% of the race distance to score.
ONE reset is allowed but the Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within TWO laps.

Please check the Season 29 pages for details regarding rules and the Friday Trophy pages in particular.

Congrats Dean, Doni, and Axel!

I thought I would do well here. I've done hundreds of laps here in the Can Ams. Even though it's a very difficult track, the 910 is very easy compared to the M8F or T260.

I was hoping to get a new PB. I almost did it. Late in qualifying, I had gone green in the first 3 sectors with an ideal lap of 1:08:65 showing. Then I induced the brake bug coming down the hill entering the right hander. I had enough fuel for one more lap and I did it again on the next lap. Sad Dean said he was having the same problem. I never pressed my luck there during the race so it was never a problem during the race.

It was nice to put in a good drive. I've been struggling lately with too many mistakes. I didn't make many here. I had two or three close calls at T4, the one after you go under the bridge. And I spun once there, shortly before I discoed. That easily could have been avoided were I not trying so hard to get the car into the 1:08's.

Here's a video of my favorite sounding V8 at Laguna Seca. The rear facing camera has the best sound. I'd love to see this car in GPL some day. It would be a great addition along with the 917K and 512M. Also, thanks Axel for choosing the 67 version of the track. I enjoy it more than the later version.

Thanks guys.

Yes, you certainly got hosed there, Greg.  Heading to a comprehensive win, I saw in the replay cap that you just up and vanished.  No justice there.  Sad

Grats to Dean on the win and to Axel for a close P3.

Not surprised in the least that most everyone opted for the Porsche here.  Light and handy for a twisty track.  The obvious pick.  Never one to be a conformist, I opted for the Chaparral to throw something else into the mix.

I had a good race except for one bungle at the Corkscrew.  My braking challenges with a stock G25 pedal got the better of me yet again.  If it weren't for that time loss, I might have won considering everyone else's misadventures.  I experimented with modifying the brake last winter with some success but it just wasn't fully satisfactory.  I'll be returning to that project again in the coming weeks to see if I can make it work more reliable.
