Moderator's Report

The moderators consider that Bob left the pits slowly and carefully, so did nothing wrong, but it would be appropriate to remind people of the dangers when leaving pits at tracks like Zanvoort, and Rouen for example, where the pit lane is next to the fairly narrow track. Please remember to keep as far off the racing line as is practical. In this case as far to the right as possible.

In the incident where Simon Loynes crashes into the rear of RogUK
It is the moderators opinion that if Simon had kept well left as he should have been when approaching the pit area there would not have been an incident. Roger was keeping to the right, and could have perhaps kept further right, but it is likely the incident would have still happened even if he had.
As Simon had to retire, there is no point in any penalties.
Please all be reminded, again, of keeping as far off the racing line as possible when entering the pits, and when still racing please try to remember to keep as far away from the line of people who may be slowing to pit.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to get off the line with these cars. I've tried high revs, low revs, medium revs, dumping the clutch, easing the clutch out, but no matter what, I always seem to crawl slower off the line than practically everybody else.  De Martini in the same car positively catapulted off the line in comparison.  If anyone who's discovered the secret would give some advice, I'd be most grateful  Smiley

Being a gentleman and sporting sort of guy I feel that i should share my technique for getting off the line, but all the while a little voice is whispering in my other ear.." don't tell him!! let him suffer and you will be able to beat him!! " devil

This will probably cost me positions and any advantage I might have over Erling but here goes..... Like all things this needs a bit of practice.
Firstly, I always use the same procedure for all cars. I do not use the clutch as I find that there is a lack of feel for the "bite point", so I sit on the grid in neutral and wait.
Once the countdown stops and we get the 3-2-1 running I bring the revs up to about 60-70%.
As soon as the "GO" shows I shift straight into 1st gear, no clutch.

This is where I had to practice, because I use the wheelspin in place of the clutch. It is a case of balancing the engine revs to keep it running at full torque, but at the same time not just lighting up the rear tyres and burning rubber, but going nowhere.
Usually once the car is moving forward you will need to back off the revs to allow the tyres to bite and give max drive. This is where it works really well if you get it right.....and makes you look a proper dunce if you get it wrong!!!

The biggest issue I have is hearing my engine above the chaos all around so that you know when to shift up to 2nd...looking at the rev counter is not always a sensible option with so much happening off the grid.

I hope that this confuses you even more (sorry the little devil was whispering again) this helps  Grin

Thanks a bunch Clive; much appreciated - promise I will never use it against you..  whistling

Actually that was more or less what I used to do, but a couple of years ago, when I had even bigger problems getting the fwd Minis off the line, someone suggested assigning a button as clutch.  Definitely seemed to improve my starts at the time, but maybe I just never perfected the 'straight into 1st' technique.  With my current G27, I felt I should use the clutch pedal for something, but maybe revisiting previous techniques again would be a good idea. (Although 'proper dunce' is probably the most likely outcome..  Wink)

Cheers,
Erling

Surprisingly this turned out to be a very uneventful race. On this tricky circuit I had been struggling to do more than 3-4 laps without going off & qualifying was no different, so I wasn't expecting too much else in the race.

I started by not trying to go too quick & not worrying about trying to stay with the car in front. After De Martini & Marc both spun off I was in 4th & just concentrated on being smooth & lifting a touch for each of the fast corners to keep the car settled. Worked well & apart from a couple of partial grassy moments I kept it on the black stuff. Very happy with 3rd at the end.  Cool

Congrats to Ziu, Erling & all finishers  clap, & bad luck to Ati & all those who didn't make the end  oops

As for getting off the line, I think which ever way you do it, you can get it wrong. Mostly it is a case of getting the revs right, when you do it flies off the line & when you don't (as Mr C. Loynes will testify) you leave the line like a ruptured duck!

Ah!!! Those Minis are a special case....I cannot get FWD cars to launch with any reliability.
I suspect that control of wheelspin is even more crucial with these cars....I need more practice.

I don't know if I need a new wheel but throughout all sessions I was getting a knock, knock, knock through the steering wheel like the suspension wasn't working properly. Also in turns the knocking was especially strong. I have a G27 and a spare one in the garage so when I get back from my hols I may well swop them and see if that improves things.

I cannot say that I had any "knocking" through my G25, but I was certainly aware of plenty of heavy vibration especially when pushing hard through corners.

I wondered if this was deliberate by the software guys? as it did give the feeling of tyres scrubbing across the tarmac............but maybe I am just being a dork?

My way to go is completely manual, clutch + h-shifter, revs about 60-70% and let off the clutch quick but smoothly.

Thanks De Martini - it certainly worked yesterday..  Smiley  Looks like I will have to do more practice of various methods.

Are you using clutch + H-shifter during race also ? - if so, I'm duly impressed by your speed!!  Shocked
