Moderator's Report

After careful consideration of the multiple T1 incidents at the Monaco F1 event the moderators have decide that no one person was to blame. Several people could have driven differently and the multi car pile up could have been avoided.

We would however like to remind people that extra extra care needs to be taken with these relatively fragile F1 cars, so we ask drivers to not be so keen to push their noses up the inside
or outside of other cars, and to lift rather than desperately hang on to the position.

Hope I can find some time to take a tour of this Monaco track soon, sounds like it is not quite the same as the GPL track.
The chicane is definitely 100% in GPL and a buttock clenching experience, usually with your eyes shut too!

It is a more recent version than that used for GPL.  The chicane is easier because the concrete straw bales have been removed.

AFAIK there is no mod track for Monaco '67 so we have to use the nearest layout available.

IT disaster chez Clive!!! scared scared cursing cursing

Tried the F1 Monaco server on Wed evening and after a few laps developing a nice stable setup and learning the track, I got a moment where the game froze again, just like it did at Kyalami.

So, I decided to do some housekeeping on the computer and check that everything was as it should be.

When I set up the F1 mod I installed it on my external hard disk ( Drive H:) that I use as  storage/backup. It worked fine for the initial practice sessions over Xmas and for the first race at Donington. In fact I used to run GPL and GTL from there too, but I recently cleared out a load of junk files on the internal hard disks and moved both of those directories "inside".

So I ran a defrag and disk check on the external drive and left it running, figuring that there would be a load of crap entries left lying around and that would tidy things up.

I returned a couple of hours later to check on things and was faced with no H: drive listed Huh!!! I tried everything I know to re-discover the drive, roamed the interweb and looked up various forums for answers but although the light was on, there was definitely no life  Sad
I am guessing that those freezes were the beginning of the end , and the act of defragging just finished off the drive completely. I have lost a load of photos and old files, plus several game folders. Fortunately I had moved my GPL and GTL installations complete with all the setups and car sets etc only a few weeks ago.

Hopefully I will be able to get the F1 mod going again with a fresh install. Just one question guys..........I have a few 32gb USB sticks and was wondering if GTL would run OK from them? That way I could have a fresh install of GTL for each series on labelled sticks, and 32Gb ought to be big enough to handle all of the tracks etc?

In some ways it is fortunate that I have "only" lost the F1 GTL install as there was not a that many setups and circuit downloads in that file as yet. It still means that I ma spending a cold wet Sunday afternoon rebuilding the F1 install and setting up another external hard drive.

I can't think that running from a memory stick differs much from an installed hard drive except for the speed of data transfer e.g. how quickly can data be read/written to the stick as opposed to an hard drive?

I'm sure others here will have a more detailed IT perspective and can advise better than I.

The likely slower transfer speeds would have me worried - if the game needs to either read or write data during play, it might impact performance.  With that being said, I've never tried to run any game from external drives or USB sticks, so have no personal experience.

I would read this though, and follow their suggestions as far as possible:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/optimize-data-transfer-speed-external-drives/

Thanks for the feedback guys.
It looks like there are too many "trip points" on the USB stick idea, so I have shuffled around some older files to make space on my internal hard drives for the F1 install.

Currently loading a vanilla GTL...then all I have to do is install the extras as per Tony's original instructions. What can possibly go wrong??  Roll Eyes

Totally Baffled of Bristol here??!! Undecided

The first time that I installed the F1 mod, it went without a hitch.

This afternoon I must have loaded GTL about 5 times!! and I still do not have a working F1 install.

I think I have experienced every single problem that has been aired on the forum, by Matt, Misnomis, Bob, Clive, Simon etc etc.

Currently having a break from the insanity before having one more go this evening.

I have even tried the method of building a dedicated "Game Data" folder and swapping it in and out of the standard GTL install..............no joy, won't even boot the game.

I have had the F1 install boot up, but no F1 showing in the optional classes, despite being able to see the F1 cars in the Car Dealer. Still could not buy them because I had no tokens despite having ( at least I appeared to have) installed the limitless funds patch.
I have even experienced Matt's issue of fighting the security programme and having to enter the CD security key at each start up, something that was not an issue when I did the first install??!!

I think I will try the next install one step at a time, rather than adding all of the various files etc before hitting the .exe file.

Still seething about the failure of that external hard drive....................a lot of valuable stuff was lost.

I run GTL on a Seagate external backup drive without any problem.  Same FPS as my internal drive on Win 7.  Several years ago on a different computer I tried the memory stick thing and it loaded the game slower and also suffered jittery video especially going around tight corners.  Haven't tried it with this computer that has more memory but the same video card. Hate to mess with my system as it is working great lately.  I use the old Raceroom digital download after my disc failed.  Seems like I have read were you can dump the steam system altogether and just copy GTL into another folder, without any Steam meddeling.
