Season 29 - Friday Sport Car Trophy - Round 10 - Spa 67

The last 2015 championship race will be at Spa67, the classic track with new layout for GPL. This is the long awaited update to the Papy original. Perhaps THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

In S29 we will race F2 and Sport Car mods alternating.
This Trophy is intented as a fun series, so keep the fairness high and respect drivers with different skills.  Wink

Handicapping:
Heavies - have allways free car choice.
Lights   -  each F2 car can be used only once! Only one GT can be used twice!
Any illegal use of a car will be a DQ! So make shure you have a plan Wink

Drivers must complete 50% of the race distance to score.
ONE reset is allowed but the Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within TWO laps.

Please check the Season 29 pages for details regarding rules and the Friday Trophy pages in particular.

Using the "no letterbox" patch makes chat messages in car obsolete, so you better uncheck it in GPL options Wink

Congrats Axel and Doni! Axel had an excellent pace most of the race. Smiley

I'm still recovering, I hope. This was the first day I've been able to drive close to normal. Smiley

I got lucky Axel had difficulties with Eau Rouge. I hoped I hadn't caused him any problems at the start. I didn't expect to since the Chap is so slow off the line.

I didn't make many mistakes. I downshifted one too many times for Blanchimont on lap 1. Luckily it didn't destroy my engine. I missed my braking point for Les Combes on lap 8 and had to throw the car into slide to slow it down. Going off on the inside made me lose a lot of time. I was slow through Blanchimont on the same lap. I was concerned those mistakes would allow Axel into my slipstream and cost me the win.

I babied the engine some after lap 1 until Axel moved back into 2nd place. I had a 17 second lead and he took over 2.5 seconds off that lead his first full lap behind me. That woke me up. Axel was running close to his qualifying time by lap 4 or 5. Wow! I realized I needed to give it a lot more to keep him from catching me. I was able to keep him gaining no more than 1.5 seconds on the next lap. After that I didn't pay much attention to the gap, focusing entirely on my driving. No point in worrying about him catching me. That wouldn't make it less likely to happen. Smiley

It was very pleasing to improve my PB by .7 seconds. Smiley I knew from my previous testing there was still a second to gain in both the Ferrari and Lola. First time I've improved a good lap in weeks.

I didn't realize how fast Axel and the 2F actually are here. I would have gone faster from lap 2-5. Luckily I didn't need to in the end. I did have to push the engine hard enough to worry it would break.

Thanks guys. I really like this track and mod combination.

You know that some people are different
Now ain't that a crying shame
Now wouldn't it be a real drag if we were all the same

Well done Greg.  And Axel and Doni.  I paid the price of not having studied, and got caught out in a couple of places.
