Grats to those Healeys on the podium. I was hoping to spoil their dominance and was a little surprised to get onto pole, even though the Merc is probably a faster car, given the alien DNA around me.
Having spent the weekend at Brands Hatch getting ( very ) sunburnt, not much sleep, too much beer and generally having a great time I had not practiced for this race.
I know the track from GPL and I opted for the Merc as I find it a very stable car and frankly I could not find the energy to work on the Healey and get it up to speed. Practice and qualli taught me that it would take 2 laps to bring the tyres up to temp, and I should have been more careful in the opening laps. Instead I tried to stay on Ziu's tail who had jumped me at the start, and fend off an eager Geoffers and the result was just dropping a wheel onto the grass at the end of the first lap which fired me across the track and into the fence.
That spoilt any chance of champagne I thought
But still 25 laps to go so I set off again at the tail of the field cursing under my breath.
The rest of the race was fun as I eased my way through the field. The big problem at Zandvoort is the lack of overtaking opportunities and there were some fun battles with Matt and oldgeezer trying to engineer an opening. By the time I had reached the dizzy heights of 4th place, and I could actually see Erling at times, my tyres were beginning to protest and I had to adapt my braking and driving to keep the car on track, A couple of minor excursions lost ground on ( and any chance of catching ) Erling and I cruised the last few laps and accepted an undeserved 4th.
