Moderator's Report

Better late than never, right?

Tim Muttram takes the flag, Greg Taber 2 seconds behind, Sam taking the last podium step.

Only one incident reported.

Server replay time: 0h13m13s

A four-car group of Marco Mercaldo, Ronnie Nilsson, EvilClive and Doni Yourth, are half-way around the circuit. Ronnie gets a bit wide and Evil slides past. Ronnie continues to run wide, does not get all four wheels back onto the black stuff and fishtails across it into the path of Marco. Marco tries to avoid a sideways Ronnie, changing lanes in the process, but inevitably the two collide.

The only advice to offer is for following cars to back off where possible and for those off the circuit to ensure a safe rejoin.

Season 29 - CHAMPIONSHIP 69X  : ROUND 6 – CHARADE

The Charade Circuit (also known as Circuit Louis Rosier and Circuit Clermont-Ferrand) is a motorsport race track in the Auvergne mountains in France near Clermont-Ferrand, the home of Michelin and Patrick Depailler.

After 5 races, Andreas is leading the championship followed by Dean and Doni… but the real leader is Doni followed by Tim when you remove  the worst result.
The race will be run under INT rules and you can do one Shift+r  (only one) followed by a stop and go in the pits (Stop and Go must be taken within two laps of the incident unless on the last lap when a time penalty will be added).

We will use the patch : 60fpsV1.

I've registered as this is a great track to race on, except if there's a bad framerate, when it will mean disaster.  Shocked Cool

By the way, before Charade, the top 5 of more used chassis is :

McLaren M7 : 13 starts
Ferrari 312  : 11
McLaren M9 : 10
BRM P126    :  9
Lotus 49B    :  9

In the real life, in 1969 the McLaren M9 was surely the worst 4WD (if we don't consider the Cosworth 4WD) compared to Lotus 63 and Matra MS84.
in GPL patch 69X, McLaren M9 is a good car with a very good top speed ...

IMO the M9 is a real pig in corners, but it is incredibly fast after some time, only good for Monza(10k).
The MS84 is the least handicap car and the Lotus is just a little more difficult to drive.

But after tonights mass disco at Clermont I have big fears...

It looks as though there wasn't a mass disconnection this race which was a great relief  Smiley. Having said this my connection kept kicking me out of qualifying  Undecided. At least it sorted itself out for the race  Grin.

As for my race, it was a rather quiet affair. Didn't quite have the pace to match Greg and Tim up front so spent most of the race battling Bob for P3. Having said this we both did our best to hand each other 3rd in the early laps, with plenty of mistakes from both of us. Eventually things settled down and I had a lonely latter half of the race to the final podium place.

Congrats to Tim and Greg for 1st and 2nd places and to all others that finished.

Curious Race.

I thought about the car which I would choose.

I was sure to need the better cars for another track and wanted to try the cooper for the first time.
I had to quit to the desktop because i didn't plug in my wheel and it reseted the chosen car.

After driving a lap I thought this car reminds me for another car...when i realised its the M9 which I had driven already.

So quit again and take the cooper. Going to the setup I realised it's a non wing car....challenge accepted !

Of course the last starting position. but i was punished for my stupidness. Watch my start position in the rpy !
I was around the corner , just seeing the two guys in front of me, far, far away !

In the race, i was unfortunately between Tim and Greg when Tim spun. At the same corner later, i was spinning around when Andreas arrived and you lost one Position.

Sorry for that guys. I was upside down once and after 7 laps i was stuck on a little bump without wheel contact. Could'nt free myself and the race was over.

Best Regards,
Bastian

Congrats Tim and Sam! Tim's too good at Clermont. I likely need a car advantage if I ever want to beat him here. I could have made it tougher for him with a BT26. It was virtually impossible to keep the MS80 close enough to get much from a tow. I tried.

That was great work on the start guys! Everybody made it through T1 unscathed. Very nice! Tim didn't get a good start but I had no desire to pass since I couldn't actually match or better his pace. I'd have been tempted to pass if I felt I was faster. You can't get much closer together, than Piero, Bob, and I were through T1. Nice job Bob to stay off my gearbox after my slow entry in T1.

Nice recovery Piero for 5th after having to let the field pass you early in the race.

My apologies for messing you up Doni by helping Clive get by you. Clive was easily able open the door for me to lap him. I caught you in place where it was harder to make it apparent when you were ready to let me lap. With no chance to beat Tim on speed I wasn't in hurry to lap. I'm glad I didn't cause you much grief Clive, although more than I would have hoped. Considering you guys lap times Clive was probably happy I helped him pass. You beat Clive in the end so I guess my lapping didn't hurt you overall Doni. Smiley

In the race, i was unfortunately between Tim and Greg when Tim spun.

No problem Bastian. I thought you did a good job.

If Tim hadn't made two errors, I wouldn't have been close. I tried as hard as I could to stay close the first few laps. I was pleased to stay as close as I did for as long as I did. Once I fell back 4 seconds I started to back off a bit since I couldn't even use the tow to try to keep up. Then Tim spins and I'm on his tail again. So much for the thought of relaxing. It's time to see if I can use the tow again. A lap later I miss my braking point and spin. Luckily it was a slow section and I recovered with little damage. I struggle for a lap after the spin and then I'm back to a good, comfortable, and consistent pace. Tim spins again a little while later. I'm back pushing again. I manage to stay somewhat close the last two laps. I needed a third mistake on Tim's part but he wasn't that generous. He definitely made it more exciting by "waiting" for me.

I'm not sure if I got a tow on my fast lap or not. I seemed to be stuck at 58.5 in the Matra and figured the only way I'd do a 57 was to get lucky with an extraordinary lap. I'm pretty sure I got some tow on lap 3. I was very surprised to see 58.77 that lap. The MS80 feels real good on the last two laps of fuel. It's not so nice heavy on fuel.

It helped me tremendously that Sam and Bob weren't better prepared and Clive took a slow car. I worried Bob or Sam might catch me when I spun. A lap later I realized I was far enough ahead I was going to have to screw up real bad for them to catch me.

I got rid of the video tearing but I'm still getting some stutters. I was only able to look at the fps counter once and see 57 fps coinciding with a stutter. I noticed it before qualifying so I reduced the AA to 4X EQ and the AF to 8 levels. That was worse. That must have made my video card go into 2D mode. I had to exit the server and raise them back to 8X EQ AA and 16 levels AF. It's hard to find the exact settings to get this new cpu to work perfectly. Things are much better now but it will be real nice when I finally get it flawless. I've now found a program that will keep my card in 3D mode so I should be able to lower the graphic settings a little to keep a steady 60fps.

The was a pretty impressive job overall for the field. 11 out of 15 finished on this difficult circuit with a difficult mod. There was a lot of good driving by many drivers. I'm glad to be part of it.

Thanks guys. It's great to run a good race again.

NP, Greg, on me getting snookered by Clive.  That crafty devil took advantage of the situation and pounced.  I would have, too.  Smiley  Grats to you on a fine P2 and scooping the FTD.

I had a whale of a time in the zero downforce Lotus.  It was fun and handy if giving away a ton of speed in many corners.  For those unfortunate enough to fall behind me due to offs, I felt neither an obligation nor inclination to let them by.  I was determined to make them work for it and I hope that they enjoyed the challenge of trying to pass a moving chicane.  I drove with scrupulous accuracy without the slightest hint of blocking.  Best overtake on me was that from Piero.  Not so much his brother.

I was not sure if you had noticed me sneaking past Doni in your slipstream Greg  Roll Eyes

I did feel rather guilty about passing Doni that way, but this track might be longish, but passing opportunities are rare.
I had done no practice for this race and decided not to "waste" a good chassis, so I opted for the Lotus 63. I dragged in a Monaco setup from several years ago and tried a few laps. The gearing was wrong, so sorted that first, and then went on to make the turn in lass aggressive as it was brutal on this setup.
If I had another 10 minutes I might have made the car much more competitive, but I didn't, and it wasn't!! If I lifted off the gas the tail wanted to lead into the corner and if I stood on the gas out of the corners it wanted to go straight on!!

With this self imposed handicap even finishing the race would be a success.  Undecided
The degree of concentration required to complete a clean lap was too much and I lost the rear end several times. Each time I closed on Doni, I made a mistake and he got away again until that sneaky pass. But even then I went off into the French Boondocks and allowed him to pass again!!

Eventually I lost the will to fight it any more and when I ripped a wheel off I decided that the car had won...not the race, but it's fight to be controlled!

Grats to all the finishers and to Doni  Wink

For Clive's testing purpose (if he's arsed) or anyone else that may be interested, here's the 63 set-up I managed a 3:10.8 (and not getting lapped, woohoo) with: http://www.filedropper.com/lot63cf
