Season 29 - Friday Formula 2 Trophy - Round 15 - Imola

The next round of the Formula 2 Trophy will take place at Imola.
The track was inaugurated in 1953, and it had no chicanes, so the run from Rivazza all the way to Tosa, through the pits and the eventually notorious Tamburello was totally flat out, as was the run from Acque Minerali all the way to Rivazza was just a long straight with a few small bends; and the circuit remained in this configuration until 1972. Long time home of the San Marino Grand Prix (and once of the Italian Grand Prix) the circuit is fast, bumpy and dangerous.

After the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994, the track was remodelled to reduce speeds but we use the original, high speed layout.

In S29 we will race F2 and Sport Car mods alternating.
This Trophy is intented as a fun series, so keep the fairness high and respect drivers with different skills.  Wink

Handicapping:
Heavies - have allways free car choice.
Lights   -  each F2 car can be used only once! Only one GT can be used twice!
Any illegal use of a car will be a DQ! So make shure you have a plan  thumbup1

Drivers must complete 50% of the race distance to score.
ONE reset is allowed but the Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within TWO laps.

Please check the Season 29 pages for details regarding rules and the Friday Trophy pages in particular.

Race List =  IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 12-02-2016
GPL mod = F2
60fps patch used = 60fpsV2newmod
Track dir = Imola
Qualification = 20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race = race starts at ~21:30 UK time
Race length = ~45 min -> 30 laps

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only, including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.
Using the "no letterbox" patch makes chat messages in car obsolete, so you better uncheck it in GPL options Wink

There will be moderation only for reported incidents. Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

Glad to be racing again; I only disco'd post-race back in iGor! Also, I forgot my phone was resting on the 'Sorry!' button Roll Eyes. It randomly appeared twice Lips Sealed.

Apologies to Doni; after staying behind in the opening laps, to see how stable my connection was, and being cautious around other cars, I was following Dave and Doni into Tosa, when their cars disappeared, then re-appeared, with Doni was spinning. I was too close to avoid a laggy collision, which left us both needing a shift-r/s&g. We then did a very Canadian-British thing, of trying to let the other car go first! laugh

The last laps were exciting, as I pushed really hard to gain on Dave R. Coming into the last lap, I had a big run and passed outside, almost on the grass, exiting Tamburello, but went deep braking into Tosa from the tighter line, and then almost lost it at Aqua Minerale. Dave was in front going into Rivazza, but I got a good exit, while Dave went a bit deep, and I crossed back to the inside line for the chequer! Very close, very Dijon 1979, but without any contact or warp hits! Cool

PS. Nice to get a lap record! On the fuel, I think a click extra should suffice for F2, and if not, then some fuel saving in the race/lower revs to make the flag.

I had fuel for 35laps and had 2laps (3litres) left  Wink

A good race with only one stupid spin in Aqua Minerale with the nose in the armco,
I had to reverse and Dean was on my tail again, had lost 20 seconds Roll Eyes

Good to have you back Iestyn Grin

My race was on a downward spiral. Went from fantastic (start) to great (Carlos!!!) to okay (dropped to P5) to poor (pit stop due to real life). Still I was lucky to rejoin in lead lap, and finally had a few more good laps. So in the end it was an okay race. Smiley

Grats Axel and podium!  Thanks Carlos!

I have no idea where my quali lap came from! A definite one off. My first race at Imola, a track I had asked many times to race at during GBGPL days but we never did. What a shocker it was Sad
I'm struggling with setups for any cars other than the Lotus48/Porsche having not driven the other much/if at all & the result is clear to see.

Grats to podium Smiley

FYI, Iestyn, you were disappearing quite alot when we were close Wink

Sorry Jani for been the beginning of the downhill of your race.  Sad

I had a mised gear and I did not want it to end up in te grass and I had to break a lot.
Even though I was the one who flew in the air, I could go back to the track relatively fast without doing a shift r.
To bad you had to.

Great 10 laps though.  Smiley

Congrats to Axel and podium.

NP Carlos! I was a bit off by myself - you can see it on server rpy. It was a nasty accident in my GPL reality -- for a second your car bursted in flames Cheesy I was surprised to see you continued without reset. But I could continue too.

Roo the L48 setup can be used for any FVA car, just change the file ending, as there are only very little differences in weight balance  Roll Eyes
A good lap is mostly an unspectactular one with good corner exits...
For Imola I use a kind of “reversed Monza“ setup with very asymetric settings Wink

Congrats Axel and Dean! I think Axel has gotten faster over the past two years. It seems I need a good bit of practice to keep up with him now. Excellent consistency by Dean to secure the silver.

Lately, I begun thinking the Bell's Palsy has hurt my consistency even though I've recovered for the most part. It seems I need to slow down a little to show any good consistency. I'm making too many mistakes.

I was patient with Axel the first lap. On lap 2 he still seemed to be braking a little early so I decided I'd try to pass if an opportunity was present. Getting my nose ahead and hoping to outbrake others into Tosa seemed to be the only place I had a chance. It didn't work on Axel. That began my march to the back of the field. I kept trying the same pass and was intent to keep trying it until I finally figured it out.

I had a while to work on Dean. The only real way to pass him was set him up just right. Something I wasn't able to really do. I was disappointed I bumped Dean again but luckily for both of us, we continued without problem. I was indecisive whether to try to pass or follow.

Carlos kept me busy for a while. Inconsistency assured I wouldn't easily take 3rd from him.

It was good to see Iestyn on the track again. However I wish I hadn't because that meant I was struggling. His fast lap showed his Q time was poor. I was surprised his Q time was so slow.

I have no idea where my quali lap came from! A definite one off.

Did you get a tow? It's worth a lot in these cars. I couldn't do any better than high 36s without one but by the time the race was over my ideal lap time was 1:36.12. Had I stuck with Dean when he started getting a tow from Axel there's no telling what kind of lap I could have done.

I'm struggling with setups for any cars other than the Lotus48/Porsche having not driven the other much/if at all & the result is clear to see.

I didn't drive the F2 mod offline other than to check that it worked. When I started racing online I decided I'd use the Lotus 48 since I hadn't really learned to drive a Lotus in any mod. I sucked in it. Once I changed to the BT23, I happened upon a setup that worked very well at Zandvoort. That's been the basis for all my F2 setups ever since. I think the Lotus is more difficult to drive than the T100 FVA and BT23 plus it's slower, at least it is for me.

Thanks guys.

I was 29,5 laps/30 ahead from you but how could I resist with someone 3sec a lap quicker than me !
Moreover I have installed the new version of Pribluda and its indications are not yet very clear for me...

...I was disappointed I bumped Dean again...

As I said in chat, I didn't notice it at all. Watching my replay, my car doesn't react, but yours does. Odd.

Quote
...my ideal lap time was 1:36.12...

1:36.2 here, vs. 1:37.3 best clear-air race lap, at what really isn't a drafting track. Tow helps a lot (if you get it at the right places).

thanks Axel, I will remember that. For the L48 I have been using my standard L33 setup & adjusting the gearbox. It definitely doesn't feel the same as my L33 but it is at least not too bad Wink

My biggest problem is (has been) that setup manager has stopped working on my race pc so I have to spend a long time getting the gearbox to suit the track I'm testing.
I have just installed GEM+ etc on my new win10 laptop so I now have setup manager working again Cheesy

I have been concentrating on carrying momentum & getting good exits with the f2 cars as they have no grunt, but that's not so easy when the car is un-co-operative under braking Wink

No tow involved which was the most surprising thing! But my exits were pretty good all around.
I know the Lotus 48 isn't the fastest but I'm a bit of a Lotus nut so tend to go for it in any mod Cheesy

Care to share your bt23 setup? Wink

Overall, I'm slower with this mod than any but the 65s and 66s. All are mods that I have much less experience. If you can, see if Rob or Iestyn will let you try one of theirs too. I think they dominate me more with these cars than the 3L+ cars.

1:33.66 at Brands67 Lola T100 FVA. 270 degree wheel using paddle shifters. You'll likely need your usual steering ratio and if you use a shifter the brake bias and ramp angles will need adjustments. I'm not fast here but it was a massive improvement of what I was doing with the Lotus. This setup may be my most refined F2 setup.
