Season 29 - CHAMPIONSHIP 69X  : ROUND 8 – STARDUST

The 8th round of the season will be at Stardust.  It is an incredible well made add-on track for GPL, and very drivable. The polo's around the track will hurt you, but are not as deadly as like Mexico, as far I have experienced. Good luck to all!

Stardust International Raceway was an auto racing track in Spring Valley, in the Las Vegas Valley. It featured a flat, 3-mile (4.8 km), 13-turn road course, and a quarter-mile drag strip. It was built in 1965 by the Stardust Hotel and Casino to attract high rollers to the hotel.  In 1966 it began hosting the season finale of the Can-Am championship. In 1968 the USAC Championship Car series held a race at Stardust. The hotel was sold in 1969, and the new owners largely abandoned the track. Real estate developers Pardee Homes bought the land and built the Spring Valley community on it.

After 7 races, Tim is leading the championship followed by Andreas and Doni.
The race will be run under INT rules and you can do one Shift+r  (only one) followed by a stop and go in the pits (Stop and Go must be taken within two laps of the incident unless on the last lap when a time penalty will be added).

We will use the patch : 60fpsV1.

Congrats Tim, Clive, Piero!

I was robbed! Things were going well until I spun because my pedals had slid. I readjusted them and was ready to finish off the race in the 27s but the dreaded screen freeze got me on the next lap.

It's shame I may have made Bob spin at T2. I think I'm slow entering that turn. I was relieved to see he still held P2 after falling back. I didn't expect I would ever get away from him. I knew I'd be tough in the race since I hadn't gotten as much out of the car I thought I should in qualifying.

I hate to see a rare one like that get away. What's worse though is I was looking forward to the late laps while light on fuel.

See you next time.

No time to practice for this race ( the story of my life lately!!) so I remembered a Ferrari setup that I had used at Mexico last season, that was just ultra solid and predictable. Maybe not blindingly quick, but I could perhaps throw it about a bit and squeeze some decent pace out of it?

Some VERY fast times up front during qually, grats to all of those posting WR's.

My start was not too bad and I held my place against some faster machinery behind and even picked up a couple of places as cold tyres and over exuberance claimed a couple of victims.
I should have kept things steady, but got a little carried away chasing the leading pack and suffered a spin or two of my own Undecided
Eventually settled down in about 6th place chasing Doni and his Mclaren.  I was able to gain ground if I got a super clean lap, but the smallest mistake allowed him to pull away again...very frustrating!
Then he vanished and I was up to 5th, I guessed a disco for Doni was a bit tough, but now I had no target to chase!!
A few laps later I was stunned to see that I had somehow been promoted to 2nd spot...although I had not passed a single car..............more discos  Undecided!!

No chance of catching Tim who was now leading, but always every chance of throwing 2nd place away with a dumb mistake. So for the last few laps I just kept it steady but still managed to clip a few tyres!!

A lucky and undeserved 2nd place, with so many discos  Undecided. Especially as I took a slower chassis  Wink

Commiserations to all of those who got booted, but there were some some seriously fast lap times being posted out there last night by more than one driver, which shows the level of competition in this series.

I agree with Clive - It was nice to get a win but it's never nice to do it this way.
Gutted for Greg and Baab, greg was in a different league last night and bob was quicker than me too.
I didn't have the time to do as much practice as I normally would for a new circuit (I've never raced here at least) so was a bit disappointed with my time - pretty sure an MS80 should have been closer to Greg's pace or at least faster than I was peddling!

I guess this means the car duplication fix hasn't solved the discos' then..

Watched the replay, and think I should have moved to the other side of the track when Doni was lapping me. No contact was made, but it was a bit close for comfort, and put him off line for the entry to the esses. Sorry for that. Other than that, I think I kept the BRpig out of everyone's way?

Commiserations to the discoees.

Not at all, Dean.  You held to the right and yielded the fast lane entry to the esses complex.  Other than a possible distraction, I felt not impeded in the least.  I read instantly what you were doing and I blasted in there at full chat.  Your action was exactly the right thing to do from my point of view.  Thanks.

If you want to see the WRONG way to do it, go to 16m28s of the server replay cap qualifying session and let it run down to 15m50s with focus on Marco.  Thing is, I'm not even sure it was an unintentional act by him.  My Q lap binned as he stole the fast lane from me.  I mean, seeing a car coming up in one's mirrors while puttering along and then gassing it to close off corner entry for another car closing in fast the right thing to do?  Not hardly.  I'm consider filing paperwork re this but at the end of day, what would he learn?

and suffered a spin or two of my own Undecided

I think we all did. I know at one point I was thinking, "I'm sure lucky others, like you, Bob, and Tim, are having as many bad laps as I am."

Gutted for Greg and Baab,

Thanks for the sympathy. The way qualifying went, it looked like an excellent opportunity for a Team Baarf 1,2 finish. I was content to follow Bob until at least late in the race. My biggest concern was doing everything I could to not wreck Bob. Once he made a mistake, my other thought kicked into overdrive, "open as big a gap as possible on as many drivers as possible."

pretty sure an MS80 should have been closer to Greg's pace or at least faster than I was peddling!

You were surprising slow. That was another reason I pressed hard the first ten laps. I didn't want to give you a chance to learn the track before I was gone. Same thing applied to Axel, Clive, and Tom.

This does appear to be a track where I have some strength. I drove a lot of laps here in the M8F when the track was released. I held the fastest time here for a while until Urban decided to better it. For curiosity's sake and since my M8F time was almost 3 years old, I decided to try to improve it. I have the top time again with room left for improvement. I improved my M7 time too after the race with more room for improvement.

I was able to challenge somebody much better than me in the 67s, which surprised me at the time. And had I not been sick, which I hadn't yet realized, I likely would have challenged Bob, Rob, and Iestyn throughout the Works race held here. This has to be one of my better tracks.

Eventually, I'll check to see if there's much difference between the M7, MS80, BT26, and 49B here. I suspect they're all very close with BT26 being fastest.

Even with the lousy ending, it was a lot of fun.

From checking the replay it looks like 6 of us disappeared at once. Sad That's a shame, otherwise I recommend to Axel we try this one in the GTs. This track may be fine for the 67s? I don't remember problems with the Works race nor do I remember if it was run at 60fps. oAo seemed to be fine here but that was run at 36fps.

Take care guys and thanks for letting me race with you.

This is a funky track. Those buried tires really prevent you from cutting corners and the track is really narrow, so you have to be so precise with your line to get good exits but still not clip a tire. There is also miles and miles to gain if you push. I went from a 1:31 to a 1:28 in practice just by pushing. Usually you'll see something like half a second gain, but here it is unusually high.

I must admit I'd had a few Belgian beers in the afternoon so might not have been as sharp Grin . It was my aunt's birthday, 84 years old Smiley . She had a great time.

I guess this means the car duplication fix hasn't solved the discos' then..

I think this is on 60 fps / track rather than the drvc69.ini car number duplication fix. 5 freezes in 5 races now Sad . Track freezes are amplified by 60 fps.

Looking at the replay it seems our mass freeze happened just as Bastian was crossing start/finish line. So, most likely Bastian froze up and took 5 more with him. Next round of beers is on him!  Grin .

Tommie.
