Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

Robert Fleurke wins the race in a Lotus completing a hattrick. Iestyn Davis finishes a strong second in the Eagle staying close, and Pelle Buchner rounds out the podium.

No reported incidents. Very impressive start and race again by the Works drivers. Attilio blew up after the start, very unlucky, but everyone did a great job avoiding carnage. Dean Logan was unlucky trying to avoid Doni Yourth, spinning out at the start. After a great recovery back to P6 Dean ultimately did not see the finish though.

Cheers guys Smiley

This was my quali setup, for race used slightly lower tirepressures, 50% brakebias and a slightly taller 4th and 5th, plus more fuel. Only used 3-4-5 gears.

Congrats Rob, Iestyn, and Pelle! And congrats to Rob for winning the championship!

It looks like a lot of fun was had with a few exceptions.

I was looking forward to this race. It was the only race this weekend I felt well prepared. 26 laps in qualifying with no spins and my only contact being a light graze against the rail between the Lesmos. Any other mistakes, such as getting a little sideways, were always early in the stint before my tires were well heated. Plus my four fastest laps in qualifying had no speed shifts. Smiley I was stoked for the race!

Qualifying was fun and exciting. My first stint, I went out with no regard towards the engine's well being. It failed with two or three laps of fuel remaining. I was quickly out again for another. I ran low on fuel after exiting Parabolica on my second stint. That annoyed me a bit. Axel was .03 ahead of me. I didn't want to start behind him thinking he'd hold me back in the early laps. I went out for a third stint. It was going well. On my last lap of fuel, I was green in the first two sectors with 1:27.29 showing for an ideal lap. Two crappy shifts after exiting the Lesmos and my engine failed a second time. What a heartbreaker! Well, less than 8 minutes to go and I'm still determined to start in front of Axel. I miscalculate my fuel and load one gallon more than I need with the time remaining. I cross the line with less than 30 seconds in qualifying. Entering Curva Grande I see an Eagle halfway on the track near the apex of CG. I take a chance and hope it won't move further onto the track. I widen my line a little bit and fly by Clive with no more than inches to spare. Luckily I didn't lose much time in the first sector and I'm still able to nip Axel by a tenth. Yes!!!

I see that Attilio didn't make it much further than I did in the race. Sad That would have been a difficult situation for me starting behind him with his engine explosion. My absence helped reduce the likelihood of an early catastrophe since it provided more room for everybody else to maneuver. My only hope would have been an excellent start that allowed me room to move right.

I looked at the paces' of the other drivers in the race. Pelle, Tris, and Axel wouldn't have had an easy time dealing with me. Most of my prerace practice was done on race fuel.

I hate that I missed it. I was curious as to whether I could temper my enthusiasm. I was a little worried it might get the better of me and I'd destroy another engine. Other than that I felt very good about my chances for a good race.

These discos are getting frustrating. I'm likely to give up if they continue with such frequency.

Thanks guys.

Struggled in quali to get in a sub27 lap, but managed to get in a good lap and it was also a PR! After that only tested my racesetup for a few laps. Also a great sub27 for Attilio, who sadly blew up after the start...not the luck you deserve mate, hope you will race again next season with better luck on your side Wink

Lol, thanks Rob, wasn't certainly the luckiest of the seasons, but these are the joys that GPL likes to dispense at times, and ultimately I drove poorly pretty much everywhere, so shouldn't really complain too much.

Many congratulations for the long overdue win in Works, with a hat trick in a very quick race and on a very special occasion, they don't come better than this! You really improved massively since I last raced you, in speed, consistency and racecraft, hats off  Shocked Shocked. Will try to be a better challenge next season  Grin Grin

@ Bob: I use metric measurements, I don't understand this English waffling  Grin Grin Psi were  145 with 148 on the RF, springs 137/170 F/R, roll bars 275/247 F/R, toe -254/178. Really nothing special at all, a stable easy to drive setup, that gives you confidence under breaking. In my experience Monza looks easy but it is not really, after your times plateau, every tenth you want to shave is like pulling a tooth and requires a lot of laps of practice.

Grats to podium and finishers as well, a very hard driven race Iestyn, after my early demise I stayed on and enjoyed watching your battle with Rob, seriously quick and consistent laptimes  Grin Roll Eyes!

See you at the next one guys

Monza Full Report

RF: What program do you use to open your setup with?
I found this: GPL Setup Manager  Wink

...& there is one now who can tell me, why I'm too slow. Yes I know one of the things was that I had 6 laps too much fuel.  Roll Eyes

@ Pelle:

First, I use GPLSM 2.2.0. It supports most mods. Also I notice your gearings do not show right in the graph, for some reason (even though your parameters are right).

I don't think a setup makes the difference. It's just having a setup optimizing for one's driving style. You seem to use stiffer setups with stable diff settings. That's OK. I drive more over the rear wheels, and you probably drive more over the front wheels. You probably are able to enter faster, I might be able to carry more speed out of a corner, in general...I like to run as soft as possible, and looking for 24psi hot pressures for the front, and  about 26psi for the rears.

Also I'd say practise makes perfect. Even when I have quite some experience now, there is no substitute for practise, as some stated in this thread. My improvement at Monza came mostly by improving the Lesmo section, and arguably my Para exit. Then again, I had the Lotus. Only natural talents like Iestyn can get away with a lack of practise  Tongue

Best thing to learn from others is to compare laps for example in GPLRA merging laps, and/or comparing data. That's how I try to learn from faster guys...hope this helps somewhat Wink Then again, you have a better ranking than me Cheesy

@ Attilio: thanks for your nice words, finally someone noticed I did improve! Tongue When I started again back in S26, you were the benchmark for me. It's great to still be improving and learning, and having quite some guys around who do the same Smiley

It's basically your driving and lines that makes the difference, optimizing a setup helps to get the final tenths...

PS: Bernie, to get the final gearing ratio's you need to multiply with the gear differential (3,1 - 10/31). GPLSM does only export the gearing ratio's in itself, not the final effective ratio's (multplied by gear differential, as seen in game). Exporting setup file in game might be better. I might assemble a setup pack again, but sadly lost most of my setups from last half year when my HDD failed.

Got down to a respectable 2:28:75 using the same gearing but a different suspension settings !

Probably useless as a race set up though because the engine temps are in the red most of the time  Roll Eyes

1m28.75s I guess, nice one Bernie Wink

For race I used final gear ratio 3.97 for 4th, and 3.35 for 5th (10/31), to prevent engine temps getting too high...also shifting slightly earlier will help Wink

Congratulations on the race victory and the Works Champion Title!  WOOHOO!  I'm not surprised in the least.  I knew talent when I hired you on at the oAo.  Wink

Not my finest hour at Monza.  Trying to side-step Bob's slow-starting Eagle, I veered wildly over to my right and took up some of Dean's road.  He half spun and fell to the tail of the field.  Geeezzz...  Sorry, Dean.  May I commend you on your brilliant recovery to run P6 in the late going til that side-swipe of the Armco exiting the Parabolica put paid to your efforts.  Hardly justice.

I had two spins...the first involving Peter's Ferrari; he tried to cut low just as I moved to get off the line; BANG!  Sorry, mate...that set me back and I just couldn't get the Lotus to handle as I wished.  GPLRA sites some damage but I think that the understeer through the Curva Grande was deeper set than just some minor prang.  Gotta work on that.  Chased Evil in the final stages...he had adventures of his own!...but couldn't hang on.  All in all, lucky to finish P7.

Mod report published. Again an impressive display of the Works drivers. Very impressive start, especially taking in account Attilio blew up. Dean was unlucky.

PS: thanks to all for congratulations!
