Season 29 - CHAMPIONSHIP 69X  : ROUND 9 – SEBRING

The penultimate race finds us in the USA at Sebring.

The first 12 Hours of Sebring was held on March 15, 1952, and the event would grow to become a major international race. In 1959, the racetrack hosted the first Formula One Grand Prix in the United States. Due to the poor attendance and high costs, the next United States Grand Prix was held at Riverside.

For much of Sebring's history, the track followed a 5.2 miles (8.4 km) layout. In 1967, the Webster Turn between the hairpin and the top of the track was removed and replaced with the faster Green Park Chicane, which was closer to the hairpin and allowed a flat-out run through a very fast corner to the top of the track and the runway; this made the circuit 50 yards longer. The circuit was also widened. Many of these changes were prompted by the 1966 12 Hours where 5 people were killed during the race. Another dangerous section was the Warehouse straight; after a crash where a Porsche went into one of the warehouses and into a crowd, the organizers installed a chicane to move the Warehouse straight further away from the warehouses and buildings. We will use the 1967 layout.

After 8 races, Tim is leading the championship followed by Dean and Doni (but if we removed the 2 worst results, Tom is 2nd).
The race will be run under INT rules and you can do one Shift+R  (only one) followed by a stop and go in the pits (Stop and Go must be taken within two laps of the incident unless on the last lap when a time penalty will be added).

We will use the patch : 60fpsV1.

What wing choices is everybody running?  Don't worry, I am not a threat - best time so far is 2:42!  Roll Eyes  I'm running 6 on the front and 7 on the back - is that too much?

Ronnie seems a good choice, as there are some turns like the esses where you need some wings Wink

Thanks Cookie.  There are quite a few very nice high speed corners, too.  6/7 feels nice and stable through these.

Collision.  I don't think it was my fault, but apologies if it was.  Roll Eyes  No point in slogging around at the back - I'm 3 seconds slower than the next man, and about 13 seconds slower than the leaders.

Well, I think yes.

Can you tell me why you move into my line (my nose already at you rear wheel) to a car which is more than 10 seconds faster than you ?

racetime 10:40.. i dont understand....

Well from the beginning: first I got caught up in the chicane, last back on circuit....overtook Ronnie.....Engine exploded..stop n go..collided with Ronnie....screw up myself in the chicane....what a day....

Argh,
I forgot to lengthen my 5th gear after the quali, so the engine exploded on the straight after some laps...

UKGPL3 is not available atm so the replay will be delayed Roll Eyes

...Can you tell me why you move into my line...

Watched that incident several times, from all possible views, and I don't think either of you is without fault.

As that was a move for position, it's not your line. It's his, until you are past. He was in the M9A, which is an absolute pig out of corners (like all the 4WD cars). You should have waited until the straight, when passing would have been much easier, and less likely to go wrong.

You should have stayed in his mirrors for the last couple of corners before the straight. By pulling out, he loses sight of you, and has no idea where you are. I believe he thought you were making a move on the entry to the kink, as he seemed to slow a bit there. When you do not appear in front, he probably thought you had backed off, and it was safe to take the apex.

You could have made the move at the entry to the kink work by just blasting your way through (you might have been a bit crossed up and awkward going into the braking for the corner onto the straight, but I doubt Ronnie would have challenged you there), but you hesitated long enough that the chance was gone, and that put the two of you side-by-side in the corner, and we know how it ended.

Yes, everybody's always harping about being careful around other cars, but this situation shows that sometimes, being too careful can also be dangerous.

Congrats Bob and Clive! Excellent race by Bob!

Dastardly Bob nipped me for pole position by less than a tenth again. Smiley I even had time to go out for a 3rd stint but I needed a little luck to take back P1.

Bob quickly towed me away from the pack. After the first lap I tried to give him plenty of room so we could build a nice cushion. He got sideways in T3 which gave me the lead. I gave it everything I had on that lap hoping to break away. Bob seemed to have no trouble at all staying with me. I should have known I couldn't maintain that pace for long. I ran wide at the esses relinquishing the lead. It didn't take me long after that to spin twice trying to catch up. That got me worried I'd be caught from behind if I didn't quit screwing up. Luckily for me, Clive and Tommie were scrapping behind me. They may have had a chance to catch me otherwise. One more spin around the 2/3's mark assured I couldn't catch Bob even though he made some mistakes in the second half of the race.

That was fun. Sorry I couldn't keep you busy for longer Bob.

Thanks guys.

Apologies to anyone who suffered at the Esses on lap 1 as a result of my half spin. No pre race practice meant that my set up was constructed in Qually and was far from ideal...but it sort of worked.
I got a great start, stole a place or two going into T1 and found myself on the gearbox of a Lotus ( Marco??) out of T3. My car was set up to handle rather than top speed, but I should have been more cautious on Lap 1. The Lotus braked far earlier that I was intending to for the Esses and I had to throw my car right to avoid rear ending him.
The polos caught my car and left me half on and half off the circuit, I made a careful rejoin when I saw a gap as I figured I was better out of there, rather than blocking half the tarmac. I hope I did not cause anyone problems.
The next few laps were a case of chasing down Tommie and Axel who were following the Lotus that I had almost taken out of the race. I was a little more cautious in trying to pass these cars.  Wink

There were enough mistakes between the 4 cars to make position changes frequent, but eventually it was Tommie and me battling for 3rd spot. I was quicker in some areas and Tommie was definitely better on the brakes and appeared to have his car set up better for those 90 degree corners on th back straight. We both made mistakes and we both "almost" got away and clear, but neither of us was driving cleanly enough to make it count. as a result we were set to battle all the way to the flag.
On the penultimate lap I had the advantage at the end of the straight, but I knew Tommie was better on the brakes, so I played defensive and took the inside line.....I also knew that I was slightly quicker through T1,2,3 and I wanted that advantage for the final lap!!
Tommie shot up the outside and vanished, I tried to hold it tight to the inside of the final corner and although I felt no contact, I could not be sure. With no other car likely to challenge for the 3rd-4th placings on the last lap I cruised through the first corners and waited for Tommie ( yes! that was guilt on my part, in case I had flipped Tommie off at that final corner!!).
He caught me at the Esses, which was where I had been hoping to open a gap to prevent him getting the slipstream later. Now I had to nail those corners around the back straight and make sure that I defended the final corner again or Tommie would have been past...he's too fast to give him any chances!!

Great racing Tommie.
Grats to Bob and Greg who were flying up front and were a distant dust cloud before the end of lap 1!!!

You've summed it up pretty accurately, Dean.

Thrilled to take an unexpected and very rare for me, win.  For once I was driving steadily and my pace seemed adequate.

Congrats Bob and Clive! Excellent race by Bob!

Dastardly Bob nipped me for pole position by less than a tenth again.

Thanks, WD to all finishers.  A ha ha ha...wasn't expecting to challenge for pole, but I was literally using everything available on that lap, engine defo wouldn't handle that punishment for long, and I was surprised with the result.  Last time I raced here in 69s I was a bit slower...or there were faster people (Mr Bot has the FL on my install, 2:28), but I took the wing setup that I used then (on the BT26) and it seemed to be pretty stable

Bob quickly towed me away from the pack. After the first lap I tried to give him plenty of room so we could build a nice cushion. He got sideways in T3 which gave me the lead. You're definitely a quicker driver than me Greg, but watching the replay I think your low wing setup was more of a handful.  I'm not sure I was keeping up no problem, you had the advantage on the straights and I was occasionally quicker in the twisty stuff.  I don't think I' have passed you without your help!

That was fun. Sorry I couldn't keep you busy for longer Bob.

Heh, was rather a solitary experience after you handed me the lead, with the long lap there wasn't even any traffic to lap.  Had a spin or two towards the end for good measure!  Old habits!

Cheers,

Bob.
