Season 29 Joe Shaw Memorial – Round 6 – Zeltweg

Please note the change of track & handicap rules

This will be the  sixth race of the Joe Shaw Memorial series 2016,  but the third ‘championship’ event.

The series will be run over a 10 race format with a warm up event in 65 cars on Tuesday, followed by a Championship race in original 67 cars on Sunday evening.

This Sunday we visit the 1971 version of the Osterreichring at Zeltweg. We were originally scheduled the race at Borovaya. There was a multiple disco at Boravaya for the 65 race on Tuesday. I’m not suggesting we blacklist Borovaya but a change of venue seems the safer option. I’m also led to understand that T1 at Borovaya is something of a crash magnet.
This race is for championship points, with period scoring; 9 points for a win, 6 for second, 4 for third, then 3, 2 & 1. A points table will be published after the third race.

We will be running Pro damage settings with the 67 car set. In a slight change of rules there is no handicap but a gentleman’s agreement that the fastest drivers should take a slower car. I think we are all grown up enough to know who the fast guys are.

Race List = iGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP = see iGOR
Race date = Sunday 17-04-16
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Zeltweg 71
Race length = 25 laps
Variant = 1967
60fps patch used   = 60fpsV2newmod
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qualifying time = 30 minutes

Gentlemen’s rules apply, although reported incidents will be moderated.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

...There was a multiple disco at Boravaya for the 65 race on Tuesday...

Which has happened at most if not all the tracks we run regularly. We'd have a very limited selection if we banned tracks at the first sign of trouble. I'm having difficulty coming up with ONE track where I haven't seen a multiple disco (Papy originals included) in some league or other.

Why not use this opportunity for a further test, with a good number of runners yet outside of a regular season? If Tuesday's misfortune for a few is going to be our guide to the stability of this track, how is Boro ever going to make it into a season schedule? Aren't you in effect blacklisting it right now?

As for the "light" version (thanks Rob for making it available), did it improve matters for anyone? I didn't use it, and had no problems (aside from T1  Wink).

edit: just checked, and we've run this track three times previously with NO disconnect issues mentioned. a bit knee-jerk to change at this time IMO.

Technically this was a mass screenfreeze.

Made a lighter version, which helped to gain a few FPS offline with 19 AI cars, however online I kept having screenfreezes/FPS drops just like with the original, lower resolution or less graphical detail settings didn't matter

It will not fix the screenfreezes I'm afraid, and I stand by Billy's decision. Better play safe with more reliable tracks. In the 65s race I used the normal Borovaya though since being on a higher end system right now. I have heard more reports about screenfreezes, Iestyn also mentioned it I think in chat.

Technically this was a mass screenfreeze...

One such event in four runnings of this track should not be a death-knell for such a fun track. Yes, I like this place, even tho I have yet to make it to T1 in a race here without being airborne, backwards, and upside down. Put it in the "questionable" category, and use this opportunity for further testing (with a near-full grid, probably), without compromising anyone's championship season.

Can you name any GPL track that has never had a mass disco/screenfreeze? I'm coming up empty. As a GPL racer, I accept that such things happen, they happen to all eventually, and deserve to put into the "that sux" folder, where they are left while we move on to the next event.

Dean, you may be right. The 67 races score points for the Joe Shaw memorial. There are 5 scoring races & no dropped scores. Under the circumstances I think it best to use Zeltweg.
Personally I quite like Borovaya. I expect we will have a couple of pre-season warm ups for the 1966 50th anniversary season where we can givr Borovaya another chance.

As I said, there have been reports of screenfreezes at Borovaya before (even by myself which I forgot). Most tracks will not have mass screenfreezes. Original tracks will not have mass screenfreezes, maybe mass disco's, but that would be a connection/server/router problem which is unrelated to screenfreezes and tracks AFAIK. Also most add on tracks will be fine.

Also we should take advantage of different league tracklists that report problems for specific tracks.

1966 Can-Am's at Borovaya, sign me up!

Borovaya has extreme draw distance values. You could edit them using the 'FB Adjust' program by Strava. That would get rid of the low frame rates (which could be the source of the freezes) but you would loose the ability to see the other side of the track at start/finish and vice versa.

I've never had a screen freeze before at Borovaya. I HAVE had two at Zeltweg 71 Grin . My two cents, I think that with a low draw distance 3do to solve fps problems, Borovaya might be more stable than Zeltweg. Heck, Zeltweg 71 was made because of screen freezes with earlier Zeltweg versions. I do like the track though.

I've never distinguished, due to the same result, and have probably been guilty of mixing the two up, due to ignorance of the difference.

Sorry Bastian, I was always going to drift to the right on the run down the straight and hoped faster cars would pass me on the left.

Monumental vision problems from the get go.  Like driving thru fog.  I decided to park it before the inevitable.  Sad

Just in time for the start of Long Beach, at least!  Smiley

I had a brilliant race, until a few laps to go when I made an absolute pig's ear of the Bosch Kurve, hit the wall and found myself facing backwards. An innocent Clive not far behind had no where to go and the resulting collision ended his race  Embarrassed. Deeply sorry about that Clive, was really enjoying that battle with you all race long.

Somehow I still had four wheels attached and landed right side up but my car was very much down on power. That made me a sitting duck to Carlos, who look 3rd spot from me with a lap to go.

Many congrats to Iestyn, Rob and Carlos for rounding the podium  Smiley.

Were the 3 previous races at Borovaya run at 36 fps? 60 fps seems to increase the likelihood of discoes/screen freezes? I've raced there multiple times and never saw much if any problem, but all those races may have been at 36 fps.

Congrats Iestyn, Rob, and Carlos! Nice job guys.

That was fun. A little better setup and it would have been better.

What a crowd in T1! I think Tim lost it? Unsure if I had a car to the right, I stayed left. I'm so glad Tim didn't come back on the track. It would have been ugly.

I'm glad everybody could avoid me when I spun at Tiroch. Smiley I think I overheated my tires in T1 and lost it in the next turn. Dean had me overheating them again but I got lucky he faltered before I did.

I was closing on Sam late in the race. That got me dreaming of the podium. I got too zealous and pushed the Honda engine to the point of no return.

Nice job by Carlos to outlast all the Hondas he had to deal with throughout the race.

Thanks guys.

I don't very often drive pro settings & it shows. The engine packed up on lap 10 even though I don't remember pushing it. So far I have bent a Ferrari & blown an engine on a Brab & an Eagle in this series. Still have two more chances to wreck something. I see the BRM hasn't really slowed Rob down. Impressive podium by Carlos in a strong field.
