CanAm 66 Funrace at the Nürburgring

To have some fun with the new cars GPL has, we will do a little Friday series with the CANM66 mod.

Call me crazy...

We move to Germany to race at the legendary Nürburgring - Nordschleife. Since its construction (1925 - 1927), the Nordschleife has enjoyed a reputation as a terrifying and merciless route through the Eifel forests. An English journalist who visited the Nordschleife during the opening race on 18 June 1927 even concluded “that it seemed as if a reeling, drunken giant had been sent out to determine the route”. The Formula 1 pilot Sir John Young Jackie Stewart – after all a three-time world champion in 1969, 1971 and 1973 – was so impressed by the circuit that he gave it the name which it will probably never lose: Green Hell (Grüne Hölle).
Racing and winning on the Nordschleife has always been very special for racing drivers, because the track is one of the most demanding in the world. Tricky corners, treacherous crests, steep inclines and gradients and constantly changing road surfaces demand great skill from the driver and put vehicles to a hard test.

Free car choice and no restrictions, but try to drive like gentlemen and let's all have fun!

Here's a Lola T70 Chevrolet 359 setup I made:

http://www.grandprixlegends.co.nf/files/TvO_nurburg_T70_Chevy_359.kd1

Place it in your player setup folder. In my case, it was C:\Sierra\GPL\players\van_Ostade__TommieCA66\setups\nurburg

During 1000 km of Nurburgring in 1967, the Chapparal 2F (which seems to be the closed version of the 2E) had, from far, the best time on the starting grid (8 seconds quicker than the Lola 2nd on the gris).
Unfortunately, it DNF due to gearbox troubles.

Tom, I really appreciate your Canm66 setups.
Did you also make some setups for F1's 1966 ? I am looking for these kind of setups !

In 1966 the Chapparal MK2D won the 1000km!
The sensation was for the europeans that it was a car with a semi automatic gearbox.

In 1967 the MK2F was even more sensational for us with his big wing.
I was doing 1:24 slot racing at that time and bought a very rare Chap 2F lexan body with a wing.
This car was such aerodynamic superior that I won the regional championship (30 of 32 heats!)

This is my Chap E setup for the Nürburgring  Wink

PS
in August 1967 Volkswagen brought their first semi automatic Beetle!

There was also a Chaparral 2F at the start of Targa Florio 1967.
The sicilian "track" is even more difficult than the N'Ring!

For 1966 I usually start out with a Greger Huttu ('GH' or 'GH2') 1967 setup. The 1966 cars have less grip and are more oversteery, so I increase the front roll bar by about 100 (metric) and increase the rear toe-in to about 0.600 (metric). Don't forget to pump up the tires to match the default setup's values!

I seem to have this setup for the Brabham BT19 for Kyalami that I've put online once, you could try it out Smiley .

Thank you for the setup!

Crazy that Chaparral went so well at the Nürburgring. In 1966 they had the nimble 2D with the small block Chevy like we have in the Can-Am 2E, and in 1967 they had the heavy big block Chevy, but that wing to give the grip despite the weight. I think the Targa was too slow for them, too heavy, no downforce and not enough gears.

I chose the small block Ford with a default set-up apart from having too much fuel and a quicker steering ratio. I started the race from pit lane. This car was a true joy to drive. I suspect the default gearing saved me from spinning the wheels too much. I drove very consistently in the first few laps, but then I made too many mistakes in the last half of the race. This car was good luck because it was always easy to recover from my mistakes. I really was marveling over the new physics. Nice work 66 CA team.

Good race,

That was an absolute white knuckle ride Shocked! So brutal.. I should try Nurburgring again in the faster mods, now that I can lap the place with some speed.

I should have ran the big block Lola, but wanted to try Tommie's setup. Lesson learned, that's the craziest combo I've driven in GPL wacko

The laps felt so fast - it was actually refreshing just to cruise a bit, on laps 3-5. I don't want to know how fast the 69 or CA71 laps feel right now cursing

This just in the sim.. IRL - total Gruene Hoelle! surrender

Well, that was pretty frustrating for me.  Tried to have a go with the M1B but it's just not drivable.  Reverted to the Genie which is a bit easier to drive, but many spins and mistakes made for a grim drive.  meh.
