Season 29 Joe Shaw Memorial – Round 8 – Dragons Nest

This will be the  eighth race of the Joe Shaw Memorial series 2016, but the  fourth ‘championship’ event.

The series will be run over a 10 race format with a warm up event in 65 cars on Tuesday, followed by a Championship race in original 67 cars on Sunday evening.

This Sunday it’s the 67 cars at Dragons Nest.

This race is for championship points, with period scoring; 9 points for a win, 6 for second, 4 for third, then 3, 2 & 1.

We will be running Pro damage settings with the 67 car set. In a slight change of rules there is no handicap but a gentleman’s agreement that the fastest drivers should take a slower car.

Note that the late Joe Shaw has the 5th fastest time here at GPL Rank, with the first 4 drivers in a Lotus! And Joe (Beefpie) drove both UKGPL laprecords in Season 22 completing a hat trick at this track; en route to the Season 22 Works Championship!

Yes Robert, I seem to recall that race,  where I held onto Joe for the first lap by wringing the neck of the Honda and burning my rear tyres in series of power slides!!  I was thinking that maybe I had a chance if I could keep  all of the bits of the Honda attached in the right places and just hoped that the tyres did not melt.
Then Joe decided that he had warmed his tyres sufficiently, and used the other 4 gears in his car. He simply drove away like I was  using a tractor against his GP car  Undecided  A race which ended in the wall for me I think.

When Joe was on form he was just about untouchable, so I am not surprised that all those ahead on the GPL rank used the Lotus!!

Nice recap Clive. To be fair, the Brab should be a great car here being light and nimble Wink The Honda and BRM would always be the most difficult cars here, due to track characteristic...

That was a brilliant race. Absolutely brilliant with hard, fast action.

I spent most of it battling with Rob and Trist for the lead this round (very rare I know  Roll Eyes), and it was relentless. Somehow I worked my way up to first place but it didn't last. A spin from me gave the lead to Trist and another silly spin on the last corner gave 2nd place to Rob. A bit gutting, but it was an absolute pleasure battling with you guys this round. Another fine race to add to this brilliant memorial series for Joe  Smiley.

Drive of the day nevertheless Sam. Couldn't hold off Sam nor Tris, my tires were shot after 10-15 laps trying to push more (never a good idea, it's better to hit the lines smooth and silky)...started making mistakes...my LR was 155C or so and went sideways all the time...after dropping to third managed the tires and pulled of a superlap in the BRM, but then the tires were melting again...one of the toughest races I have ever done...

Here's the replay of the lap. One of my best hotlaps ever...I beat Joe's UKGPL race laprecord, but I do not think it will register due to the LM2 format of the JSMT. Doesn't matter, it's perfectly fine Joe keeps his records! Smiley

Grats Tris, great drive Sam, despite the mistakes...also Dean drove very well... Smiley

Ha, I was lucky to finish with four wheels still attached:

Quote
...8m12.340s
Dean Logan - spotters reporting:
minor problems with left front tire.
...
33m32.340s
Dean Logan - spotters reporting:
medium problems with left front suspension.
...
42m04.340s
Dean Logan - spotters reporting:
severe problems with left front suspension...

I guess the two or three other times I smucked the wall didn't register.  Grin

Took a stable setup from Albi and was just aiming at finishing without spinning. So did that (spent last half expecting engine to rain on the parade, like usual). Tire temps went wild early (right front was worst for me), but managed to keep it all together (and out of Clive's clutches). Might well have been a different story if Iestyn had bothered to qualify and not had to work his way through the field.

Congrats Tris, Rob, and Sam!

It appears I needed more practice with the Cooper. One small mistake with my line led to two more mistakes in rapid succession. Following Dean into the wall at what looks like the 8m12s mark, trashed my alignment so bad, I couldn't continue.

There's room for improvement. I had hoped to improve noticeably during the race.

Thanks guys. It was fun while it lasted.

What a great race it was, just watched the replay...a worthy tribute to Joe once again! Smiley

Tris making a great recovery, even when he drove the BT24, Sam who was on fire making nice moves...Greg who was pushing me hard early on...Dean being super consistent (hitting the wall Cheesy), me pulling of that great lap...fights throughout the field and some great driving in general....

Enjoyed that a lot even when struggling with especially the left rear tire...the balance was so sensitive, but you can see me burning the left rear in the replay notably in the last part of the backstraight banking when it tightens... Wink

This is a really great trac, especially  the corner sequences & the Dragon Wing curve. I can see this featuring somewhere in Season 30.
Pleased to finish a race in the Joe Shaw trophy - on the same lap as everyone else.
Good battle with Andreas for half the race - the Lotus had just enough to keep me ahead.
