CanAm 66 Funrace at Spa67

To have some fun with the new cars GPL has, we will do a little Friday series with the CANM66 mod.

Spa67, the classic track with new layout for GPL. This is the long awaited update to the Papy original. Perhaps THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Free car choice and no restrictions, but try to drive like gentlemen and let's all have fun!

A black screen just as I entered Stavelot.  Sad  Had another one a few days back.  Stupid W10 update changed my settings.  I've since reverted to what I want instead of what Microsoft thinks I should have.  Grrr...

Was fun while it lasted, at least.

Well that was a very tense race for me.  At the end of qualifying Greg punched in a 3.18 so I expected him to be super-fast.  Sure enough he took off on the first lap, but then spun into La Source.  I had Axel breathing down my neck for a while, then suddenly Greg again charged past!  But he went onto the grass, so for a time I was comfortable in the lead, but then Greg started coming back at me again, and the last 7 laps were a tough fight to lose as little time as possible per lap.  Managed to make it across the line, very good race.

I had to disable the replay setting to load the track, so I couldn't save a reply - is anyone else having trouble with the replay link button above?

I'm sorry Fran for blocking part of the track on the first lap. I probably could have pressed the escape button a second earlier if I had been a little more alert.

...I had to disable the replay setting to load the track...

I checked on that after you mentioned the issue in chat pre-race, and SRMZ's recommendation is to put "replayMemoryOverride = 128000" (some say 180000) in your core.ini (or change the value that's already there to that). It's only Spa67 that makes this necessary, due to its hugeness or something.

There's a problem with the ukgpl ftp server, but I was told there are top men working on it. Top men.

No problem Walter the contact was without big consequence,my problem was a strange roll of my steering wheel in some situation.Impossible to do sudden maneuvers but also not so sudden. At second lap and end of the Masta i was on the hay bales. With this condition i have prefered the withdrawal from the race.

Yes UKGPL3 is down again, so get the Replay here  Wink

The ChapE is just too much slowed down, I could not follow the M1B's in short distance slipstream.
In real the Chap could flatten his wing...

Top men.

Ha!

I actually had changed the setting to 128000 the night before as I couldn't load a CA66 AI race on the track.  But I still got that message when I tried to attach to the server.  So I tried 10000, and that worked.

Thanks for replay file!

But not enough to actually save the replay, obv. From what I read, any multiple of 2000 is acceptable to the game, so maybe try 80000 or whatever? Should be enough to save replays (unless near full grid on a 60fps server, as that's when you'll exceed 80MB replay size, then prolly have to rely on others to provide .rpy).

The server uses 180000 - the biggest rpy saved was full grid 69X at Rouen with 178MB

Congrats Mark and Tommie!

What a crazy race! But every race in these cars is crazy to me. What a tough car! I beat on it a lot. I narrowly missed a catastrophic wreck at the end of lap 1. To keep from spinning and hitting a wall on the left before La Source, I had to wait too long to brake. Once I did, I immediately got sideways and ran the nose into the guard rail on the right. Luckily I didn't suffer much damage. Thanks for leaving me room to reenter the track Tommie even though I stopped once I realized you were right behind Axel.

I'm still struggling with my handling in the tow. I had to keep some distance when following Axel and often lost a lot of momentum. I lost too much grip on the front, twice in Axel's tow. One time was exiting Malmedy. The car slid wide and I ramped off the banking on the left. I rolled 23 times. I had to check to my replay. That's probably a record for me. Smiley The rolling got me so confused, I had no idea where I was. I almost did a complete circle looking for the track. Luckily Doni came by as I was heading back towards the track, otherwise I wouldn't have known which way to go. I was worried I would be DQed for going the wrong way. It's amazing I finally landed on my wheels and the car would still run.

Prior to that, I ran wide exiting La Carriere. I wanted to come back on the track but I didn't want to risk wrecking Mark. I waited as long as I could, passed where I thought Mark would already be turning in for the next turn. My plan worked well for not wrecking Mark but I couldn't stay off the guard rail and trying to stay far left brought me off the track again. After all the things I ran over while fighting like crazy to maintain control. I reentered the track much wilder than previously. I was very relieved Tommie and Axel were able to avoid me. After that incident, I had lost all confidence in the car. It felt terrible. Luckily within two more laps, the car seemed to be working well again. At that point I thought, maybe it's the fuel load giving me trouble and not damage.

By the time I got back into 2nd place, I didn't think there was any chance to catch Mark. But when I saw the 27 second gap drop to 23 in one lap, I thought I might be able to do it. 8 of my last 9 laps were very good. I faltered a bit on the penultimate lap just as I thought the tow was about to start getting strong. I ran wide at Stavelot and had to slow drastically to avoid hitting the abutment on the left.

That was fun. I'm getting better with these cars, but I still need more practice. I struggle to keep just below my limit without passing it and I'm not yet driving well in the tow.

I'm glad I didn't wreck anybody but myself. I was trying hard not to wreck anybody, but it was sheer luck I didn't take Tommie out after screwing up exiting La Carriere.

Thanks for the practice and racing guys.
