CanAm 66 Trophy 2nd race rerun at Spa67

Celebrating the new 1966 CanAm mod and its 50th year anniversary at the new Spa67 track.

Spa67, the classic track with new layout for GPL. This is the long awaited update to the Papy original. Perhaps THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Please make shure you use the lightest version of the track!

Check the Season 30 details regarding rules and the Can Am (66) Trophy pages in particular.

Yeah, I got confused entering Masta at 350kph, but should have resigned earlier and wait a little...

With 2 laps to go I messed it and got caught by a pole.

Grats Greg for this superior win,
I took the Lola 427 and was quite happy with it  Wink

Congrats Tom and Carlos! Congrats to Axel too. 4th isn't bad for the big block.

I wasn't happy that my lucky win was nullified so I took a car I thought would give me a good chance to repeat. With Rob and Tim's absence, I could have used a slower car. With their absence and the high attrition, it might have been wise to take the 427 again. But it's was still fun to learn to drive another car. The T70 305 seems a little bit easier to drive than the M1B.

I set up the car soon after the announcement of a rerun. It didn't take long to get it going well. After the previous race, I decided I wanted a car that might keep me out of trouble at the start of the race. To try to keep from causing Mark any trouble I practiced 4 or 5 opening laps plus several more starts while quitting after Les Combes. Once I started practicing on race fuel, I realized the Lola 305 liked to bog down on the start too. I shortened 1st gear until I started getting decent launches. It bogged down a little on the start and Mark got a run on me. Luckily Mark didn't force the issue and gave me the first turn. I went into Eau Rouge a little faster than I wanted but I wanted to make sure Mark was going to have to wreck to beat me into T1. Smiley I hit the bump rubbers which made the car a little twitchy but wisely I did enough practice to keep the start clean.

I also paid particular attention to Holowell, La Carriere, and Blanchimont. All places I've had recent trouble with.

I drove well yesterday. Some days are better than others and yesterday was a good day for me. The first 9 laps went well. The only real mistake I made was running a little wide at Holowell on lap 1 thus bumping the wall. Lap 2 was a very good lap. Things were going great until lap 10. Then I repeated a problem that plagued me at first with these cars. I was started braking for Les Combes while still turning right. Suddenly the rear twitched a little and sent the car to the left. I was able to get the car slowed a lot but not enough to keep from slowly going over the guard rail at Les Combes. Luckily I had a large lead so the 14 seconds I lost didn't cause me any trouble. The car felt a little strange after that. I was worried going into Burnenville but by the time I was in Malmedy everything seemed fine again.

It appears discos weren't a problem this time. That's nice. I thought about it a few times during the race.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the racing. See you next time.

So I was happy to forfeit my P2 placing from the initial running thanks to the multiple disco's for a chance at a win.  In the re-run, comprehensively destroyed my works M1B early on for a net result of zero.  Swell.  C'est la guerre.

Grats to Greg on fine win!  Blistering speed in the AAR Lola for a walkaway victory.  Well done.

Good job by Tommie to score P2 and a podium for Carlos.  Tip of the hat, gys.

I can only blame myself for a poor qualifying result as I bungled the braking for La Source on my 2nd and final attempt lap.  Almost certainly gave up a front row start with that error.  That would prove a killer as on Lap01, Cookie flew off in the Masta Kink complex trying to avoid Tommie's slowing Lola.  Not sure why TvO chose that moment to get out of the throttle but the upshot was that Axel was caught off guard and had little choice as to his reactions.  I collected his Lola and went for 10 barrel rolls(yup!  I counted them!)but landed on my wheels.  I continued with little effect despite the mechanical report noting assorted damages.  The shunt put me down fully 30 seconds.  Sigh...  Carried on cutting some good laps til a mistake in the Kink did me in for good.
