Season 30 Amateurs Trophy – Round 9 – Charade

The Circuit de Charade (also known as Circuit Louis Rosier and Circuit Clermont-Ferrand) is a motorsport race track in the Auvergne mountains in France near Clermont-Ferrand, the home of Michelin and Patrick Depailler. Built in 1958 around the sides of an extinct volcano, the originally 8.055 km (5.005-mi) long Charade was described as an even twistier and faster version of the Nürburgring. Some drivers like Jochen Rindt in the 1969 French Grand Prix complained of motion sickness, and wore open face helmets, just in case. But 1970 was no better- Rindt was hit in the face by a rock, something that the circuit was usually littered with, and often caused punctures on the track.

In 1964, the VI Trophée d'Auvergne Formula 2 race podium was a sign of things to come: Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt showed their skill before the track hosted the 1965 French Grand Prix. In 1966, John Frankenheimer filmed a small part of his movie Grand Prix in front of 3000 locals, who posed as race spectators watching actors like Yves Montand and Françoise Hardy.

In total four Formula One French Grands Prix were held at Charade: 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as that of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971.

Chris Amon -who recently passed away- set the laprecord here in 1972 in his Matra, in an epic recovery effort to finish third after having suffered from a puncture.

Least amount of prep for a race but had done a 3:28 offline. Only got 1 qually lap in after joining late and was then on a decent lap but got Disco'd. Rejoined and got half a lap in on race fuel.

Started 5th I think and slipped up the inside of Philippe at the top of the hill but was polite enough to let him past again later Smiley

Got up to 4th I think then came round a bend and saw Philippe across the track and couldn't avoid him. Reset and did a SnG then was looking forward to resuming battle with Philippe until he disappeared from the server.

Was too busy reading the gaps on Prib and fancyied catching Dave C but forgot to actually drive at the same time and rolled over into the countryside. Race over.

Wasn't really looking forward to this one anyway and doesn't look like many points scorers but am looking forward to Albi because I like it. A good old fashioned airfield track.

Today was a little unusual for me. I was able to join the server early to qualify, but then I ran out of time just before the race started. It was fun while it lasted. I'll try to be ready for Albi (just in case). Maybe next season I'll try the Ferrari again.

Philippe, you did a great job with the Cooper at Silverstone.

For me, Cooper should be more adapted to a track like Charade than Silverstone !

About my race, I made 2 or 3 mistakes at the begin of the race and another mistake whan I was under Bastian's pressure !
Nice win for Bastian, and great race from Billy !

After a few practice laps on Monday I almost did not bother with this race. I managed to get down to about 3,30 & was rather surprised to quallify P2. Bastian was clearly much faster than anyone. Both Rainier & I got a better start tham Bastian. Thanks to Mictosoft I no longer have Pribluda & was starting to think of a win at half distance, after maintaining a small lead over David from the start. On lap 8 the pit board gave me the news that Bastian was behind me. There are no easy passing  places at Clermont & I managed to hold him off for a few laps but not long enough. P2 & some great racing isn't a bad result, not quite the same as a win.
Philippe - after your result at Silverstone I was expecting you to be competitive at Clermont. From memory the Cooper is not too bad at Albi, especially if you can use the draft. I exprct you to be at a good level with the Lotus in the Pros next season.

Great Race. had a bad start and two mistakes chasing Dave.
Later closing up to billy but overtaking is hard here and billy has balls of steel. I was lucky with an outside manouver suprising Billy.

Grats to all finishers.
