S30 Specials Series Trophy - CanAm71 - Spa67

This is a fun series where we do the big events, so let's go on with the biggest motorsport events .

Spa67, the classic track with new layout for GPL. This is the long awaited update to the Papy original. Perhaps THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Please check the Season 30 details regarding rules and the Specials Series Trophy pages in particular.

A surprising result for me.  When I annoyingly crashed at Stavelot on the opening lap I kind of gave up.  I did my penalty stop and then the stop and go, turned up the music and committed to picking up points.  But then others started to have problems too.  I managed to get past Carlos and was very surprised to find myself in the lead.  So I kept the same relaxed attitude and drove carefully to the finish.  Finally a win!

A win is a win is a win, Mark!  Smiley

My goodness me!  What a horrible round pour moi.  I just could not make the M8C work that day.  I've previously cut a 3:01 with this very car so was very disappointed to see that I was not even remotely close to duplicating that performance in either qualifying or the race.  One of the big problems I find with the CA71's on this circuit is the steering which can only be described as scary.  The slightest movement of my G25 steering wheel has me darting off in all directions.  I've coped with this lamentable feature by slowing down the steering ration considerably(18:1 or 20:1)but last Friday evening, I was hopeless in coping with the situation.  My typical ratio is 12:1 with 10:1 for really tight circuits like Monaco.  Here, on Friday, I tried 30:1(the maximum)and it didn't help one little bit.  True, I did try some new suspension parameters but that should have helped, not hindered.  Theory be damned!  Next time, I'm going to go the other way!  LOL!  Comes the race, I took it fairly easy for the first two laps and I had some confidence that I'd make it home safe & sound.  Nope.  Carved the first apex in the Masta Kink too close on Lap03, clipped the grass and went for a rapid tour of the Belgian countryside to the everlasting detriment of my M8C.  Sigh...
