Season 30 Professionals Trophy – Round 8 – Silverstone

For Round 8 of the Season we go the the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone. Silverstone Circuit is a motor racing circuit in England next to the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury. It is built on the site of a World War II Royal Air Force bomber station, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track.

Silverstone was first used for motorsport by an ad hoc group of friends who set up an impromptu race in September 1947. One of their members, Maurice Geoghegan, lived in nearby Silverstone village and was aware that the airfield was deserted. He and eleven other drivers raced over a two-mile circuit, during the course of which Geoghegan himself ran over a sheep that had wandered onto the airfield. The sheep was killed and the car written off, and in the aftermath of this event the informal race became known as the Mutton Grand Prix.

The next year the Royal Automobile Club took a lease on the airfield and set out a more formal racing circuit. Their first two races were held on the runways themselves, with long straights separated by tight hairpin corners, the track demarcated by hay bales. However, for the 1949 International Trophy meeting, it was decided to switch to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the straight linking Woodcote and Copse corners, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 38 years. For the 1975 meeting a chicane was introduced to try to tame speeds through the mighty Woodcote Corner (although MotoGP would still use the circuit without the chicane up until 1986), and Bridge Corner was subtly rerouted in 1987.

The late Ronnie Peterson holds the laprecord for the old lay-out.

Quali was so-so, kept on spinning out burning my LR tire...

Adjusted the tirepressures for the race (but now I burnt the LF tire when pushing real hard...) Roll Eyes Axel sadly spun in Woodcote early on, touching the apron I think...that was a shame...because Tris kept on making small mistakes was able to hold on or even threaten him, but his car advantage plus skills were too much...also he had more pace later in the race, and I couldn't push as hard as I would (like to), burning my LF tire on occasion...still happy with my drive, and a nice fast lap in the BT7! The LF tire was purple tho crossing the checkers Grin

Grats Tris, well done Andy, and finishers Wink

Pardon the delay in delivering my report...

Bit of a short field as we missed some regulars.  Hope things pick up for the next round.

Grats to Tris on the win and special grats to Robert for doing such a bully job in the BT7.  Remarkable!  Splendid run for Andrew to score a podium, too!

Nice recovery by Axel to claim P4 and Dean who aced me in the dying laps for P5.

I really dislike this venue chiefly for its curbs which can upset the car so badly and cause a wicked off.  Years ago at RSC, someone posted a thread about their nightmare corner on any GPL track of the time.  I posted with just one word.  Abbey.  That still holds true today as, once again, I was bitten by turning in just a fraction early and striking the curb at Abbey.  Typical result in that I spun wildly.  Axel was by and away cleanly and Dean was well within striking distance which he converted to a pass with but a handful of laps remaining.  Try as I might, I could not counter.

I will say that it quite fun chasing Andrew for many a lap as the gap varied between 2-4s.  He'd gain a bit, lose a bit.  I'd throw in a stonker(for me)to gain only to slide somewhere on another lap to give it back.  Impressive that Andrew held it together throughout.  Bloody good show!  Smiley

Once we're through the first couple of laps, these races are all about the gaps for me. I'm checking the gaps on every straight and doing the sums, hoping to remember to brake for the next corner. It was all I could do to keep you, Doni, out of my slipstream range. Then, when Axel came through, I think I had about 7 seconds on him with 15 laps to go. What was his qualy time compared to mine? If we keep the same differential for these laps, will he catch me? What's going on with Tris and Robert? Remember to brake!
I was taking Copse and Stowe in third in quite low revs to avoid a wobble or a spin and that helped consistency.
Grats to all. It was a very good race for gap watchers.
