Tonight's race will be a difficult change of driving styles for me. Last night UKGPL ran a race for the 1955 GP cars on this circuit. The difference between last night's race and tonight's competition are poles apart.

The GPL55 cars mimic the fragile brakes of that era and as they heat up, effectiveness drops to almost zero. This is not a gradual reduction during the race, just braking too heavily into T1 will overcook the brakes and they will be useless when you reach T2. If you can negotiate T2 and T3 without using the brakes they might have recovered by T4!!!
There is a small light on the dashboard that shows green if the brakes are OK, yellow if they already warm and red when they are useless. As a result a great deal of the corners have to be taken without using any brakes, on narrow tyres with minimal grip. Ironically the fastest lap times were in the 9:20's which is not that far off the pace of tonight's cars!!
The big difference tonight will be approaching corners with brakes that actually work!! and with tyres that might offer more stability than a supermarket shopping trolley!!
It might take me a while to adapt, so apologies in advance if I brake too early  Undecided

Well, that was a weird one, I went through a hedge but it wouldn't let me back through it onto the track.  Huh

Oh well more wasted practice.  Angry

Ziu sent me a PM saying the server was not up. It was, but I guess it was not reporting to the lobby
so I restarted it, but forgot that the tyre and fuel settings are swapped over in the sever screen
so another restart, and it was sorted, sorry if it was "absurd" but I haven't done GTL admin for years.

Results and replay now posted.

Very sorry about your arm Ziu.  Hope you can recover enough to make a comeback in future races. Thanks regarding the championship, but nothing's set in stone yet.

Nürburgring has been an obsession of mine, ever since I first set (virtual) foot there. Winning a race here has been a long time ambition, I finally fulfilled yesterday. Bittersweet though, with Ziu's untimely exit, especially given it looked like it could have been a close race.  He got ahead at T1 on L1. I was impressed by his speed in the Porker through some of the curves, not least the two carousels. I got the first one wrong on L1 and lost time.  The Alpine on the other hand, seemed to have a distinct advantage in the upper end, once we got into 5th.  Thus had no problem zipping past and reclaim the lead down the long straight.  Ziu reduced the gap through the twisty sections on the following lap, but then left on L3.  That pretty much deflated the balloon; with around 50 secs to the next car, all excitement was gone.

Grats to Matt & Clive for completing the podium, and commiserations to John and of course Ziu.

Cheers,
Erling

Sorry to hear about Ziu's arm. It does sound like he has some serious problems there. I think we all hope that your arm recovers Ziu, so that you can compete in future UKGTL races.

Second item is that Bob should be given 3rd place, as he waited for me to pass only 100mtrs from the finish. For some reason he thought that I was Matt and that he owed Matt the place? Hope the results can be adjusted.?

After the first 2 minutes my race descended into a lonely battle between me and the Nurburgring. The Ferrari GTO is a very easy car to drive but lacks the outright grunt to compete with the Porsche and the Alpine in my hands. So I was cruising along just watching the gap back to Matt and Bob very comfortable in my 3rd place. Then Ziu quit with his bad arm and I was gifted 2nd place, all I had to do was keep it steady. There was no chance of catching Erling unless he totalled his car against a random tree and I was able to compensate for a quicker lap by the cars behind and regain a couple of secs if I needed to.
Last lap and I had around 9-10 sec lead, so no pressure.....................until I double downshifted and locked the rear wheels, sending the car flying into the undergrowth and stalling the engine in the process!!
Matt went past and I rejoined about 5 secs behind himm with Bob only 2 secs behind me. I gave the Fezza a good thrashing on the last lap, hoping to catch Matt before the main straight, but although I closed up around 4 secs on that straight I could not actually catch him. Then in the final chicane I tried to brake just a little too late on worn tyres and poked the nose into the Armco...and stalled the engine yet again!! I had to wait as Bob went past and thought I had gone from 2nd -4th, almost hero to almost zero!!
As I powered the car up onto the finish straight Bob slowed and pulled over allowing me to sweep past, as I said above. 3rd place was Bob's and I deserved what I got for making dumb mistakes!!
Grats to Erling and Matt, but commiserations to Ziu and his arm.  Sad

No please leave me in the 4th spot, with a full attendance field I would have never even been close to 4th.  Very frustrating race for me on a track I like very much.  Sometimes if I need to "wind down" I will just go on it in the Mini or Abarth, start at the back and see how I do against TC & GTC cars.  I had little or no time to practice or work on the Alpines setup during the week because of visitors and things that had to get done around the house according to the lady of the house right now!  I was very inconsistant and never solved the problem of the Alpine, seems like if I just brushed the curb it would try to throw the car across the track so had to just be very careful and I am normaly  a curb pounder anyway. And the only other choice was the Cobra and I would never make a lap with that beast.  Oh well it's behind me now and will turn the page and get ready for Silverstone.  Now what to drive?
