Well......by some good fortune on my part and a couple of errors by others, I had quite a profitable points haul last night  Wink

The Mini 970s which I had to use for the first race had proved a real headache for me. As I posted about a week ago I had managed a PB of around 55secs on my first offline trials. Normally, if I find some time to practice a car/track combo I would expect to make some improvement. But despite trying all sorts of setup changes, braking points, apex points etc I was just not improving.
The only thing that I knew for sure was that I could gain or lose 0.5 secs at the hairpin, and the only thing that I could identify was that avoiding excessive wheelspin in the Mini was crucial on corner exit?? With no option in the garage for this race I had to drive the Mini and knew that I would be up against a few experts....so I was not sure that I would be competitive.
The start went well and I found myself chasing a bunch of Escorts and Ziu in his lightening little Imp. Between me and the Escorts was another 970 Mini and hot on my tail was Tony in his 1275 version. Although Tony was in a different class I was not going to simply roll over and allow him a free pass, as I felt our speeds were not so different over a whole lap. Tony was quicker on the straights with his extra power, but was definitely quicker through the Esses before the hairpin and he made a run on the inside under braking for hairpin. Regrettably he was a little too bold and slithered into Oldgeezers (?) Mini ahead taking both of them onto the grass. I exited the hairpin 2 places better off and with a class lead !!!
A lap later my excitement got the better of me and I slithered wide at T1 allowing Rog to sweep past. I was able to recover before Tony and Bill caught me but it took a long tome to catch Rog who was driving a very steady ( and quick ) Mini. Our cars were so evenly matched on pace that I just could not find a space to make a pass....and Tony + Jeep had found an extra gear and were closing too quickly from behind!!
They tangled I think and gave me some breathing space just before Rog ran wide with about 2 laps to go and I stole his class lead. Tony was on a mission behind and I had to drive a defensive line for the last lap to hold my place.
Yes!! Ziu's phantom Imp was a shock just before the finish line and I just managed to dodge past Shocked

For the first time this season I actually thought about the second race... I had 2 Escorts left. The obvious choice would be to save the faster car for Brands Hatch. But a look at the available car table changed my mind. The majority of drivers only had an FVA left to drive so would have to use that option for Mallory, which would mean that they would not be competing in that class at Brands..... shifty
So, I could take the faster 1600RS at Mallory and give myself a good shot at the class win in a faster car, leaving me with an FVA for Brands where there would not be so many cars in that class. Sneaky huh???  Cheesy
John ( Jeep ) did his best to spoil my cunning plan by matching my quali pace and snatching pole!! As per usual I had qualified on race fuel so knew that I could be on his pace for the race. Then he spluttered at the start and I was lucky enough to get the power down to lead into T1.
Pre race practice had taught me that my setup was very skittish on cold tyres and that I needed 2 laps to find any proper grip, especially on the rear end, so I had to tread very carefully and defend for the first part of the race.
Gradually the grip improved and I was able to squeeze away from John. Once I had a few seconds as a buffer it was simply a case of making no mistakes, which I almost failed to do by running wide at T1, throwing away 2 precious seconds. But a lap later, John lost time and I was 5 secs ahead again with a cruise to the flag.

Exactly the same happened to Ziu in race 1 I narrowly  missed him on my run up to the flag.

But in both cases if you watch the replay you will see that both Ziu and myself did cross the line and at exactly the same distance past the flag we were punted back. So I believe  it's a bug in the track rather than a server or connection issue.

John

Yep, I see what you say. In my race you suddenly appeared as a stationary flashing car on my line. I checked my replay ( It usually doesn't save) of race two and this is the case. In the race replay you were visible as I rounded the corner, stationary but solid. I would have assumed you had run out of petrol and taken avoiding action.

A pity but I have seen this on other tracks also at times so they may also have a bug. I can remember passing right though a flashing stationary car without a scratch when having no chance to avoid it in the past and also taking to the grass to avoid one that others passed through.

Real life racers are lucky they don't have these problems.  Smiley

First race was a bit of a non-event. Could not get near my pb in the Imp in qually, then near the end I noticed there was no one else on track, glanced at my router & saw tinternet had lost connection. Fortunately it came back with time to rejoin but I had to start from the back.
Got a rubbish start, car in front was slow away & I had to lift off causing the engine to bog down as everyone sped off into the distance. Caught & passed Bill on lap 2 but got distracted by a melee at the hairpin, missed my braking point & went off. Eager to rejoin I spun the car around but mounted the bank on the inside & got stuck so quit.  Roll Eyes

Race 2 went better, again car ahead was slow away & again I bogged down a little allowing a couple of cars past. Retook Ziu (that doesn't happen often!) on the first lap & Misnoimis on lap 2 to regain my starting position. Clive & John in their RS Escorts were already gone & continued to pull away so was happy with 3rd in the first of the TC-FVA cars.

Congrats to the podiums.  clap clap clap

Uneventful race 1 for me, except for the last few seconds.  No room for error though in the early laps, as John was a close and constant presence in my mirrors.  Gradually built a gap, like Ziu built a gap in front.  When he crossed the finish line, a ghost of his car suddenly appeared in front of me, like others have described.  Managed a wild swerve around it, but almost finished the race sideways through the pits - that would no doubt have earned me a DQ, but got it under control in time to finish on track.

Not really in the mood to comment on race 2. Suffice to say I got rammed off on L2, and spent the remainder of the race trying to make up lost time.

Incidentally think Misnoimis should be reinstated in the position he held before hitting the ghost car - without it, he would surely have finished there, and this was no fault of his.

Fun race for me, had some action at first and then some alone time just driving the track.  Then towards the end (last 5 laps or so) I noticed I had someone really charging up behind me.  He was gaining about a second a lap so tried to speed up but he still was coming strong.  If the race had been 1 lap longer he would have gotten me I'm sure.
It was Erling in another FVA!!!!  I also agree that misnoimis should be moved up ahead of me, the ghost car was in the track flickering on and off when I got by it.  Weird happening!

Regarding Misnoimis and my Ghost car I completely agree with Erling and Bob.

Like race 1 the 2nd half became a bit lonely. I was stunned to take pole ahead of Clive, so much so I made a complete mess of the start and Clive was in front from the flag. Initially after following him for a lap or so I thought I just might take the place back as his car seemed a lot more nervous in the corners than mine but once the tyres had warmed up he found a bit more pace and a few less than elegant attempts on my part at the hairpin meant he began to pull away in the 2nd half of the race.

But well chuffed with 2nd.

I will amend the results to take into account the issue with the ghost car. If not today then tomorrow.

Thank you guys, I was peeved because of the GTL bug that caused my non-finish. I was not worried about the points as I class myself as an enthusiastic occasional interloper rather than a regular. Unfortunately I have other commitments on a Monday that usually sees me arrive home late and tired so I don’t get to race too often. When I do race I try to finish as high as possible and get some satisfaction out of bringing a car home, more or less, in one piece. sweatdrop

I totally agree it would be unfair if a competitive racer contesting a championship was thwarted by this program bug. I guess there are issues with dodgy connections and bugs in programs that appear to be the same issue but aren’t just to complicate things. Probably the worst is a disco or a CTD but I think these are unfortunately not rectifiable.

I think this is a great Series and hope to race again online in a couple of weeks. thumbup1 thumbup1 thumbup1
