Found this little gem of an old BBC documentary over at SRMZ.  http://srmz.net/index.php?app=ccs&module=pages&section=pages&id=1&record=12

Some terrific footage of old circuits like Pau, Spa, Donnington, Reims and Nurby etc with cars and power that are staggering for the 1930's. When you hear comments like
" the 1937 Auto Union was capable of 195mph" and "performance was only limited by the tyres"  "fuel economy was 3 mpg".

But the most interesting comment I thought, was the rain soaked Monaco race where there was never any thought of abandoning the event. They raced through a deluge with overpowered cars on skinny tyres...

Excellent video Clive. John Roberts turned me on to this one recently. There is some nice color footage from the 1930s. It's rare to see something like that.

One of my favorite parts is when the driver, I forgot the name now, at the German GP is drenched in gasoline. I couldn't believe he drove away after that. I'd have jumped out of the car and tore my clothes off and then started screaming, "Spray me off! Spray me off!" I'd have been immortalized as the driver who tore all his clothes off in the middle of the German GP. I think I'd have rather driven naked than soaked in gasoline.
