Moderator's Report

Hat-trick for Rob with pole, fastest lap & a win in the BT24. The only driver to get a 1,19 lap. Other podium places were taken by Trisatn & Iestyn.
A lot of early baths but no reported incidents.

Robert!! I crashed out of a safe 4th place trying to let you through - I came out of t1 with my arm in the air, I did not accelerate fast to let you through. You went for it and then seemed to slow, and I lost it making sure I didn't hit you......very frustrating.

Also Dean and Marco appeared to be going for the Al Pease award for slow driving - I know that they were trying to save points for later in the season, and had borkn cars but is this really legal? They get in everyone's way every 2/3 laps and in one person's case do not get out of the way anywhere quick enough when people are bearing down on them.

Sorry Colin, hated to see that m8  Sad

Wasn't sure if you would give room, so took extra care, and we ended up side by side at a difficult point. It was partly undecisiveness on my behalf, but IMO you could also have lifted a bit at the straight. Did take extra care so I wouldn't take you out, but prolly overdid it...my aim was to lap everyone safely without taking anyone out...

Should have taken a slower car anyway  Undecided

Now that was a fun race Smiley
Much better to have a great race on a track you and others know by heart, then drive on an unfamiliar track, waiting out others to crash, or crashing out yourself (veiled attempt to criticize historic div track choice  Grin).
Apparently there has been a change in igor server I wasn't aware. Almost didn't make the race cause of it, thanks Iestyn for the help in chat sorting it out.
Got on the server with about 10 minutes to go, and qualified 16th. Like Clive I took it easy on t1, but we actually managed to go through it without incident. All the way to t2 before the melle started  Grin. Managed to get around spinning cars in the first couple of laps or so and found my self in I think 9th place just behind Arf. It was going to be a long race betwwen Arf and me, as we slowly climbed through the ranks. I think Jethro was ahead of us for a bit, then between us, then he fell behind. Later we encountered Pelle. He was clearly faster but he made small mistakes which kept pushing him back. I spent a couple of really intense laps, with Pelle right on my engine the whole time. I made a slow exit out of leekuop and Pelle passed me on the straight with his Honda top speed. But after a few laps he made a mistake and it was back to Arf and me, alone 1 second apart, fighting over 4th. Until about 6 laps to go, when my engine started smoking. I followed Deans example, and tried to finish the race, but the engine gave out completely with three laps to go.
All these brabhams with enigine failures in one race, we'll have to have a word with those engine supliers  Grin

Well, I finished and was first BRM so shouldn't be too upset - but that was not exactly the return to glory I'd hoped for.

Qualified well enough considering I had the BRM and such a long break from the '67 carset, even got a decent start but was then fired off of the outside of T1 on Lap 2 by Arf.
It looks like a combination of him catching a slide and lag that caused it, but that dropped me back to about 11th I think.
Carried on motoring and thanks to attrition I found myself up to about 7th or so again after 10 laps.
Then my monitor turned off censored
Luckily it didn't sound like I hit anything/one too hard while trying to slow and smash every key I could reach, but when I regained my sight I was sat just in front of T1 pointing the wrong way and now back behind Marco and Andreas.

That destroyd my concentration and after Robert lapped me I lost it and managed about 5 spins over the remainder of the race - given that I could occasionally take time off from Andreas this is annoying as I essentially stopped myself from having any hope of re-catching him Sad

I got farther than BobW!

That was terrible for some. Sad I apologize Bob. I didn't know you were beside me. I don't know if I could have got the car further inside or not. I didn't know anything had happened until I watched the replay. Disgraceful.

Congrats Rob, Tristan, and Iestyn!

With poor thinking on my part, I quickly destroyed my engine. It may have been a battle with Iestyn had I shifted properly.

Thanks guys.

Very disappointing 'race'.
As the driver behind I accept responsibility for the T2 incident that ended Doni's (& my) race, sorry Doni. I should have been more patient/smarter.
But, if you have an engine problem, surely you should move off circuit to let the rest of the field pass, not sit in the middle of the track & then turn in for the apex of a corner?

Grats to podium & thanks to admins Smiley
I hope for a better race next time.

Nice to have a full grid, joined late after helping Syd and Michael with their racelist. One run good enough for 7th with a bit left on track (and a tyre pressure tweak needed for the tyre pressure bug fix, which does seem to lose you a bit of speed from my experiences so far).

Got a slow start with not enough revs in the Cooper, but after Bob was out, Pelle spun, Jethro spun, and Greg's engine blew, I just followed Rob and Tris best I could, going from an Alesi 10-4 'just hold on to it' steering style, back to a normal 9-3 by mid-race. Leaving some margin in T1 for the plastic brake pedal, managed a good final lap for 2nd fastest lap. Every lap in the 20s and 21s, except for a minor off (24).

I thought there must be something up, Tris, for me to follow you with the same pace in the Cooper! Smiley Rob probably could have won with the Cooper as well.

PS. Had to laugh at your race report, Clive laugh

In hindsight should have taken Cooper. But hadn't practised and the ego took over as well Roll Eyes Used my old Braby setup tweaked with a more aggressive diff and gearings (still only using 3-4-5). Had a few good laps in quali, but messing up sector 4 meant no sub19 (which I did this morning in training) for the BT24.

In race most laps in the 19s, already early on, but also took it easy with lapped cars meaning lesser laptimes. Also spun off once following Tim's too late braking point when I was about to lap him. So all in all quite inconsistent for my standard and my racetime could have been easily 10s faster Tongue

It was a shame Colin had to retire after a miscommunication, and me arguably being too cautious. But there was still a lot of room on the outside IMO. Didn't notice the raised arm in the race, but saw in in the replay. I felt bad about it since we also had a nice talk at Brands last summer and Colin deserved that P4...

Will miss Monaco and reconsider my car choices for other races. But since I've raced mostly the slow cars last couple of seasons, as well in 65s and 67s, I felt I could take the Brab, also hoping for some fast car/fast driver combo's on the grid...

Well done to Tris and respect to Iestyn having to race with inferior equipment...good job finishers and commiserations to the retirements. Thanks to Jethro for server and mods for org. Smiley

No problem Greg, I should have known better than to be in that position.  I was thinking precisely that when wallop.  My initial thought was that it was warp and on reviewing the replay a few times the warp is evident from certain cameras...not your fault.  Obviously I was disappointed, reckon I'd have been in the thick of things, but it can happen at the start.

I did a bit of praccy for the race, trying different setups but couldn't get near to my pb, so a bit disappointed in that.  My qual time was the best I've managed recently tho.

Kudos to Robert, v impressive pace, I watched you for a bit in qualifying, you didn't seem to be doing anything radically different to me, just doing everything more smoothly and better, so not surprised at the lap time difference.

See you next time,

Bob

Cheers, I'd say at Kyalami I'm gaining most time in sector 2. The trick is to keep momentum high through and out of Jukskei, also taking a tight line through Sunset (I brake/lift off quite early there, keeping it tight and accelerating as early as possible). And ofcourse sector 3 is very important through the chicane, keeping a nice line and being smooth. This track is one of my best originals I think, and I've done a zillion laps at it, and found a good line.

It's a shame many  had to retire early in the race, yet it's great to see a full grid! Wink

PS: for those interested here is the hotlap replay and the setups I used. In an optimal lap with my current skills and setup I think a 1m18.8s is on in the BT24, still 6 tenths off Phil Woodward's WR.
