Moderator's Report

Summary
With the championship leaders limited to the slower cars, the race was wide open with at least half a dozen drivers in with the chance of a win. Despite being underpowered, the long straights gave the Eagles a chance to stay in touch with the leaders. Eventually the two Hondas prevailed with Evil grabbing the top step of the podium with Doni less than a second behind. Sam brought the underpowered Eagle home in a very creditable third place. A special mention must go to Alessandro who for the second race in a row was denied a podium finish by an unlucky mistake. It is surely only a matter of time before he scores his maiden UKGPL win.

Lap 1 – Turn 5 – Francesco Molteni and Iestyn Davies

Iestyn gets into a rear wheel slide on the apex of the corner. He manages to correct the slide but looses a lot of momentum. Francesco has a much better exit speed and accelerates into the wide open gap that has appeared on Iestyn\'s outside. Iestyn regains control and starts to accelerate but he is pointing slightly left and he clips Francesco\'s rear wheel causing both cars to spin. Unfortunately both cars make contact again but this time the excessive collision boxes propels Francesco\'s Ferrari into the trees. Fortunately both drivers can continue but Francesco looses a lot of time extricating himself from the undergrowth.

Francesco did nothing wrong, there was a clear opportunity to overtake and he made a clean attempt to pass.

Iestyn clearly made a minor error which lost him momentum. His half spin resulted in him pointing in the right direction to regain the racing line but he was unsighted and didn\'t see Francesco\'s Ferrari until contact had been made. Iestyn didn\'t turn the steering wheel in order to point in the direction he ended up in, so it would be harsh penalise him for a side-by-side contact. Nevertheless a driver of his experience should have been able to anticipate an attack from behind and driven in a straight line until he was sure there was no car alongside.

  • Iestyn Daviesadvice — Maintain a straight course if you are under attack and unsighted.

Server replay time: 0h14m48s

Lap 8 – Turn 2 – Bastian Grupp and Andreas Gebhardt

Bastian spins onto the grass on the outside of the track and allows his car to roll backwards onto the racing line. Andreas is approaching and cannot avoid Bastian\'s Ferrari. Contact is made, Bastian is out of the race but Andreas can continue after loosing some time and possibly incurring some suspension damage.

Andreas did nothing wrong.

Having made an unforced error it is Bastian\'s responsibility to rejoin carefully without interfering with the other drivers. His first thought should have been to keep his car off the racing line, so he should have applied the brakes instead of allowing his car to roll backwards onto the circuit. Only when he was sure there were no cars approaching should he have attempted to rejoin the race.

Season 31 Historic Trophy – Round 2 - Panchine

Welcome to the second round of the Historic Trophy at Panchine. A very convincing fantasy track imagined to be in North Italy. Fast, sweeping circuit with traps for the unwary. There are a couple of jumps, a tricky turn or two and very sticky hedges, so be careful. It is a relatively long circuit so space should open up, but slipstreaming might be crucial whether you are in front or behind.

This race is for cars with 3 Litre engines.

I'll setup a practice server tonight.  I need to check it out, my server seems to be temperamental with Panchine.

That race was tremendous fun. Spent most of it battling away with the field, and only a silly-half hearted move which resulted in spin, ruined my race-long dice.

I haven't really driven the 66 Eagle all that much, and while it sounded magnificent, I really didn't appreciate just how underpowered it is. However, with a generous tow and a nice balance through the bends I was able to keep in contention with Clive, Doni and Tris. Tris fell by the wayside a half distance and not long after, I made my fateful move on Doni.

I say move; it was more of a plonk-your-car-in-no-man's-land and hope for the best  Roll Eyes. I'm not sure Doni even knew I was sort of alongside and turned in as normal. I had to take avoiding action to avoid a collision but my recovery from my spin put me well out of contention, out of the tow and no way of catching Clive & Doni  Embarrassed.

Not at all your fault Doni, I should have backed out much sooner. Silly of me to even contemplate overtaking in the esses.

Congrats to all finishers, track sure is fun  Smiley.

So much error.  Angry

Mine ended (hopefully in the points edit: NOT EVEN  Angry Angry Angry) when Andreas got sideways out the hairpin into Alessandro. So of course I'm the one on the rollhoop.  Tongue

Fun tonight.. Learned the combo in qualifying, fixed a terrible setup from a previous race, start went OK.

After the straight on Lap 1, I had a H16 wobble behind Axel and didn't expect Fran to be on my outside when I gathered it up; when I saw him ahead alongside I couldn't turn away fast enough and we collided, twice. Thankfully Fran was able to continue, I thought he was out on the spot.

Managed to catch up with some help from those in front and there was a fun double pass with Andy and Axel. After lap 3, every lap was a 54, with 53s once I started to catch the slipstream of the lead pack (unless it doesn't stretch 5 seconds back? angel).

Noticed at this point that I had used 10.4 gallons at half distance (12.5 laps), with 9.6 left, possibly starting a click too low. Starting to think about saving fuel and still catching up with slipstream, Tris had his engine blow, then I caught myself bogging down a gear too high, clutch/downshifting with power on and promptly blowing up the engine.  Roll Eyes

A shame, as it felt very Clark-like to catch up to the lead pack in the #5, and it could have been even faster had Alessandro not spun off after following me for a few corners (I thought I could try and follow him once he passed me).

Not sure if I could have done anything in the lead battle, but another 3rd place would have been a nice prize at least. If I couldn't save enough fuel in the Clive/Doni slipstream, the outcome would have been the same as Clark at Monza in '67 Tongue

PS. Doni, my question from last week was: you saw both F1 and Can-Am at Mosport in 1967, yes? I had a discussion on Reddit which highlighted how the '67 Can-Ams were faster than the F1 cars! Interesting to think that F1 only regained being the fastest cars once it gained wings and Can-Am ended after the amazing Porsche.

Short race for me  Sad
Approaching the fast turn 3 on lap 1 and had a choice to either try to go around the outside of Philippe or sit in behind him.  Decided on the former but unfortunately I went slightly wide just where Billy was stuck in the hedge.  I clipped Billy and lost my nearside rear wheel.  Sorry Billy but I'm pretty sure you were stuck solid in there so I didn't ruin your race. I nearly ruined David's though, pleased to see you missed the carnage Dave.

Pleased the server was OK.  No connection problems or bad warp from what I could see.  If there were any issues I'm not aware of please let me know.

No warp seen in the whole race with a full grid.

Just had to keep on the tarmac with this slow eagle...

Phil, I had a screen freeze in qualification. Otherwise server connection seemed fine. Can't actually say it was a proper test under race conditions because I stuck the car in the hedge at T3 on the first lap. The damage was done before you clipped me. No need to file a report. Might revert to the Brabham for next race, having problems controlling the prancing horse.

I had a very bad start which kept me out of some trouble ahead. I went from about 16th to 6th without out doing much.
I let some hard chargers through for a better chance of survival and then crashed myself.
I think I overtook Axel's low powered Eagle and couldn't make the next corner twice. I was lucky that the grabbing hedges didn't quite hold me.
It was fun with lots going on.

In qualyfication I'm freezed and the only way was to reboot PC, esc/ctrl-alt-canc, don't works, but maybe was problem only mine because when I have come back in the server all the other drivers they were inside

After a few turns I forgot ( Grin) that tires was cold I made a mistake and going out on grass, I touched very softly a net but this enough for to break a suspension, from here all my race was a torture because my steering whell was turned by few degrees and because at every turn my car can go in untersteer or oversteer casually and without notice, the many spin was the naturally conseguences, the last when I have reached Blood for podium
Great race all and compliments for victory and podium, and thanks Admin and moderators to permit all this

That was a real fun race and not just because I finished first.

I think I might owe an apology to Gareth? Maybe we touched on the tight right hander at the end of the straight when I went for the pass and we both ended up on the grass? If you think that I was at fault put in a report Gareth and let the mods take a look.
Before that moment it was an intense battle at the front with the more powerful Hondas and Ferraris jostling for position with the better handling Eagles that were being sucked along in the slipstream.

The trip onto the grass dropped me back to about 6th or 7th and I had to put in some seriously risky laps to get myself back in touch with the leading group.
The rest of the race was intense. Doni was hustling his Honda along and was definitely better on the brakes than I was and with any slipstream he threatened to ( and a couple of times, did achieve!!) a pass at the end of each fast section. When Tris blew his engine it left a 3 way battle for the podium places. Sam would tuck into the slipstream on the straights and regain lost ground under braking and better handling, only to lose out again when the Wazas used their horsepower on the straights.

When Sam made his unfortunate error and dropped back it became a straight dogfight between two Hondas and I felt that Doni had the better handling setup under braking and cornering, but I maybe had a small edge on acceleration. Probably we were running different ratios and diffs?
TBH Doni had me worried with his speed in my slipstream and superior braking, so with about 10 laps to go I decided that I had to get beyond slipstream range if I wanted to be sure of stealing the champagne. I gradually squeezed out a lead and eventually got beyond the magic 100metres which starved Doni of that tow. With the gap at 160 mtrs and only a few laps left I was beginning to feel secure.............................never a good idea in GPL!!
Then I caught a backmarker at the wrong part of the circuit and in seconds all of my hard work was undone with just 4 laps to go. That relentless Doni was all over my gearbox again, before making the move to take the lead with 3 laps left.

I sat behind him and planned how I might make this work. I had noticed that I appeared to gain an advantage through the Esses, but only if I was in front and could take my ideal line . So I had to pass him before that point and then run for the flag, what a brilliant strategy! Grin
I reversed the slipstream advantage and followed Doni until the last lap before making my move at the end of the straight. Hope my attack was fair Doni, but it had to be there or nowhere.  I did indeed pull a small gap through the Esses which was enough to keep me safe to the flag.
I felt a little guilty about denying Doni his win, you were a tough nut to crack Doni. Maybe next time you will be too strong?
