Moderator's Report

A solid drive from Andy Livingston to claim his first win of the season, in the BRM no less. After a collision on the first lap, Fulvio put in an excellent recovery to 2nd place. Billy Nobrakes rounds the podium, despite managing some sight-seeing across the dunes.

There was one reported incident on the first lap. As it was the first lap incident it managed to involve the majority of the field! So here goes.....

Server replay time: 0h01m20s

John Hammonds and Fulvio Policardi have a coming-together on the straight after Hugenholtz, causing Fulvio\'s car to spin across the track. Bastian Grupp, unsighted over the crest of the hill, takes avoiding action over the grass. As a consequence, his trajectory with limited control takes him straight into the path of John a couple of corners later, flipping him over and causing Bastian to come to a standstill on the racing line. This causes a roadblock and the surrounding collisions were an unfortunate chain reaction.

All of this started with John and Fulvio\'s collision. John gets a better exit out of Hugenholtz and gets alongside Fulvio but squeezes him over the crest. GPL\'s collision box is extremely overzealous in comparison to GT Legends for example, so please be prepared to give very generous amounts of space when battling over cars.

Bastian\'s trip across the grass was unfortunate, given the trajectory he took. A light application of the brakes on the grass would have helped Bastian avoid John further down the circuit, but apply them too much and there\\\'s always the risk of swapping ends (ask me how I know?!).

The majority of drivers did a commendable job of slowing down given the chaos in-front of them. There were a few unfortunate collisions, such as Ronnie Nilson hitting Dave Ranier, but that was due to taking evasive action of a stationary Bastian up-ahead, who was unsighted until the last moment.

However, Fabio Locarno should have been far more careful as he had clear sight of the chaos in front of him, but didn\'t slow down nearly as much as he should have done resulting in an un-necessary collision.

Given the circumstances and how it came about, I would simply put this down to marginal side-by-side contact on John\'s part. As John is relatively new to GPL (and its generous collision boxes), I\'ve put this down as a caution. Always try to leave copious amounts of room when overtaking.

Fabio, please be prepared to stop if you see a complete mess up ahead.

Season 31 Privateers Trophy - Round 03 - Zandvoort

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the third round of the season we go to Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands. On 7 August 1948, the first race was held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. Up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

This Season we don't have a Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

What a difficult track. I enjoy practicing at Zandvoort, but I am still learning how to stay on track.

The US changed our clocks forward last night. From what I gather, the UK has not moved clocks forward. I think that will give me an extra hour to practice before the race.

Not sure why but can't seem to get anywhere near the form I had a few years back, and even that wasn't that good.  Over 2 seconds a lap down on my own PB and 4 seconds off the leaders laps; with 1 close call and at least 3 off's and a shift R / stop go I was already nearly a lap down by lap 3 (I think) and I wasn't about to become a mobile chicane for 30 odd laps, especially on this tight track.

Perhaps the fantasy of taking the Honda for the season is pushing my limit too far and I better consider reverting to the more friendly COoper BRAbham combination I created the team name for.

Sorry to Phil who I know I messed up with a spin directly ahead of and I believe a few others were caught up to.

When you find out what it is please tell me!  I'm just the same.  I've been putting it down to my H-Shifter and clutch but it might be something else  Shocked

No probs, I couldn't avoid you when you had the spin.  It was just at the point where I was getting the power down ready to try to slipstream you down the straight.  It is one of the few places at Zandvoort where it is safe to try to pass.

Race ruined by the accident of the 1st lap.

2 of the 3 leaders collided, I was cautious but I saw a car on the grass at right and another car (or several ?) rear ended me.
After that, I could continue but I was very slow 2 or 3 seconds less than usual.

Hopefully my engine exploded and after the shift-R and stop and go I had a pleasant race and could overtake 4 or 5 cars but finished far from the leaders.

I'm still learning this track. Is it just me, or do some of the corners at Zandvoort have negative camber on the inside groove and positive camber on the outside groove. If I missed the apex, I would have to back way off because the car did not want to turn. I had more difficulty staying on track in the second half of the race. I thought for sure that the tires were too hot.  I checked the setup after the race, and the tires were perfect. I have to accept the blame for losing concentration.

I really enjoyed the challenge, but the track definitely got the best of me today. I am able to leave with some sense of satisfaction, but it could have gone better.

Good race,
Walter

No easy way to say this but the lap 1 incident was all my fault and I have to take full responsibility.  hang

I can't even plead lap 1 red mist, I felt I could make the pass cleanly but did not take a wide enough line. It was driver error (Mine) pure and simple..

I thought I had left Fulvio plenty of room on the inside the replay shows it differently, and while he did slide ever so slightly I turned into him. In the ensuing aftermath I was hit by Bastian (But not his fault as the only reason he took to the grass in the 1st place was I guess to avoid the carnage) and ended up on my roof so had to wait for most of the field to pass before taking my Shift r and rejoining. Took the S&G at the end of the lap and left the pits in around 15th place.

The rest of the race was a great, I had to take to the grass at 1 point to avoid a recovering Bastian later in the race and lost 2 positions but recovered them a few laps later when Bastian and Francesco had a misunderstanding at T1.

Other than Lap 1 I had a great race but there can be no denying it wasn't my most memorable moment in the season so far.  nono

I have to be happy with the result, but there are reasons why this happened.
I found a hot lap at the end of qualy to put me on the front row and then I was very surprised to find a good start in the BRM. This meant that when everyone else had a mid-track party on lap1, I was away and clear with Axel. Billy and Gareth were guarding my back around 5-10 seconds away and when Axel went off I had an empty track. Apart from DaveC, I didn't reach anyone to lap until just a few laps before the end. All I had to do was keep going - only 8th fastest on the track.
Fulvio started his recovery drive from about 45 seconds behind me and would have caught me in another two laps. Bastian also was closing in quickly at one point.

The worst thing that happened to me in preparation for this race occurred about 20 minutes before qualifying began. I turned a 1:27.8 in practice. Although that's a modest number in this crowd, it's nonetheless only half a second off my PB from 17 years ago and a LOT better than I'd been doing in the two-week run-up to this race. Naturally I began to have delusions of grandeur, something that any reputable psychiatrist is sure to tell you to avoid on the eve of an automobile race. Somehow I calmed myself down, qualified in the back of the pack with a 1:28.something, and awaited the all-but-certain mayhem that seems to be part and parcel of the first lap of all too many GPL races.

Ronnie Nilsson, one of my confreres in oAo, was gridded just behind me. He too was in a Cooper. I dogged it a bit at the drop of the flag, half-expecting total carnage in the first turn, and Ronnie slid past me. I waved. The guy behind Ronnie next appeared and I let him by as well. Curtis showed up as we closed in on T1, and I waved him through. In my mirror I could see a couple of other drivers, Locarno and Turner, waiting for their free passes, so after we made the left hairpin at the hay bales and headed uphill, I let them through too. All in all I considered it a reasonably successful start, having lost five places in 500 yards and dropping from 12th to dead last, but at least I wouldn't be caught up in the disaster that I was certain was waiting up the road.

And, of course, disaster there was in abundance beginning just beyond the crest of the hill and continuing through the uphill right-hander as well. Through my unusually clever strategy I'd managed to regain all the places I'd lost in the first 500 yards within the second 500 yards and all would have been well but for two tiny problems: 1) the guys I'd smacked in qualifying were now in front of me and 2) the guys who'd kicked my butt in qualifying were now behind me and highly irritated. Oops.

Well, it's Zandvoort. If you can stay on the track more often than not, the fates are bound to smile upon you. And so they did. I smiled back, though I admit that I may have to reconsider my starting grid maneuvers. I'm not sure that what I've been doing is what Fangio, Clark, and Senna would have recommended.

Pepe,  I wondered to myself if I should have used a similar strategy. I could not resist pushing hard, and chasing faster lap times. Unfortunately, I lost at least ten seconds each time that I went off track. Maybe I'll remember this lesson next time.

It was a complete disaster. I'm not very good in doing decisions in a second or less. I was seeing the first carnage and decided to get on the green, trying to hold the car stable but than i hit you. it wasn't probably the best decisions but else i would have hit Rainier. the following more and mor cars crashed into us. I was recovering but than failing more and more. I overbreaked T1 and put a car in the grass. I will report that after viewing the replay (i thought it was billy) sorry. Many spins followed and when I tried to overtake francesce i got a wheel on the green under breaking and spun towards outside track. Sorry for that fear moment.
