A great opening to the new season, with a good mix of cars on the grid.
I just could not find the sweet spot for my Eagle and was a couple of secs of my old PB here. I guess it is because the 3ltr Eagle is not over endowed with torque ( or outright speed!) but I have a real problem getting any heat, and grip, into the tyres. As a result I knew that it would be 3 laps before I could hope to push hard.
From 9th on the grid I bogged down and lost at least 2 places
, but a couple of errors ahead gifted me back my 9th place over the opening laps
I managed to stay in touch with the leading group and was tailing Andreas and using the slipstream to drag me closer. I think it was because I was getting such a huge speed boost that I overcooked T1 and ran wide. Despite a fairly solid "clunk" on the wooden fence and spin across the road I suffered no damage...but lost 3-4 places. Phil was first of the cars to get past and I think he may have allowed me through as his Ferrari should have had more power than my Eagle?? Then it was Dean, and I pulled a cheeky, banzai outbraking move at the end of the back straight, just managing to hold onto the car through the long right hander. Ahead were Doni and Tim ( both in Eagles ) so I was keen to make that a 3 way dice if I could catch them.
Slowly lap by lap I was gaining as the two of them exchanged places. Just when I thought I would begin to get the advantage of the tow... I had a weird braking incident when all wheels appeared to lock and I lost all directional stability
The heavy impact against the barrier and those concrete bumps caused some serious damage to the engine and I was down to about 50% power with 10 laps still to go!!
I had to abandon any hope of catching Tim and Doni as I could only get up to 4th at the ends of the straights. Billy was a good distance behind but I was losing 6-7 seconds a lap and there was a long way to go!!
I had to use a gear lower in most corners and just try and carry as much speed as I could through every bend. With 3 laps to go I was confident that Billy would not catch me and I was able to let Tris and Lalethor lap me without hindering them, although I had been hoping not to get lapped!!
GPL has the ability to spring surprises just when you think everything is under control. So it was on my final lap. As I exited the final turn with the flag in sight.....it all went very quiet as the engine finally failed completely
. I was able to coast over the line and hold my 7th spot, but if I had not been lapped by the leaders,I would have been a dead duck.
Grats to Tris and the podium and to all who raced and finished.
