Season 32 Historic Trophy – Round 1 - Zeltweg 1971

The first race of Season 32 race finds us in Zeltweg Austria. Zeltweg - the original Österreichring. Built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high.

Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the championship standings page

Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

If you want to remove the crowd noise on the start line look here.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the Historics will be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice, 2 litre or 3 litre, for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page. Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement.  See below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

Practice server (UKGPL4) is up on IGOR if anyone wants to try it.

These 66 cars feel very quick after driving the 55s for a couple of races!

Missed braking for Bosch lap 11, 3-wheeled car still two laps from points = retire. Dang.

And sorry to Phil (iirc), all sideways and crossed up coming over the rise out of Tiroch, not moving as fast as expected, while I was trying to line up to draft down the straight, missed a shift or something? No time to react.  Embarrassed

Yes you're right, I missed a gear but when we are driving so close to get a draft it is enough to cause an accident.  No problem, thankfully you could continue.

Sorry you hit me Fran.  I should have hit the esc key sooner.  Sorry it spoilt your race but I had no idea I was on the racing line, the screen is just noise when you are upside down.  Having looked at the replay it looks like you had time to react but it is always easier when looking at the replay.

I was distracted looking at pribluda.Since my eyes don't work very well at the screen distance,i take advantage when i'm on the streight to look the small number but few seconds are fatal with the speed. In the previous season happen to me to go out of the track looking at pribluda also on the straight. It would be better if i look only on the track Grin

Phil,
There was something strange with your car at the start.
I was behind you on the grid  but just a few seconds before the start your car disapeared,
I took a normal start and I hit your car who appeared atm but was completely immobile (is it an english word ? I mean "not moving at all")
Hopefully, it seems there was no damages for both cars.

Maybe on the replay, we can understand what happened.

Hi David
I know exactly what happened but I don't know why. I lost connection for a while and I was dropped from the server. Hence my position on Prib was wrong and I had blue flags waving at me whilst I was racing for position with Clive and Dean.  On the start line I lost connection enough to dissapear for a while but not long enough for a full disconnect.

I'll have to sort this out. It has happened 3 times now.

Sorry for getting in your way, hope it didn't spoil your race.

A great opening to the new season, with a good mix of cars on the grid.

I just could not find the sweet spot for my Eagle and was a couple of secs of my old PB here. I guess it is because the 3ltr Eagle is not over endowed with torque ( or outright speed!) but I have a real problem getting any heat, and grip, into the tyres. As a result I knew that it would be 3 laps before I could hope to push hard.
From 9th on the grid I bogged down and lost at least 2 places  Undecided, but a couple of errors ahead gifted me back my 9th place over the opening laps  Cheesy

I managed to stay in touch with the leading group and was tailing Andreas and using the slipstream to drag me closer. I think it was because I was getting such a huge speed boost that I overcooked T1 and ran wide. Despite a fairly solid "clunk" on the wooden fence and spin across the road I suffered no damage...but lost 3-4 places. Phil was first of the cars to get past and I think he may have allowed me through as his Ferrari should have had more power than my Eagle?? Then it was Dean, and I pulled a cheeky, banzai outbraking move at the end of the back straight, just managing to hold onto the car through the long right hander. Ahead were Doni and Tim ( both in Eagles ) so I was keen to make that a 3 way dice if I could catch them.
Slowly lap by lap I was gaining as the two of them exchanged places. Just when I thought I would begin to get the advantage of the tow... I had a weird braking incident when all wheels appeared to lock and I lost all directional stability  Shocked The heavy impact against the barrier and those concrete bumps caused some serious damage to the engine and I was down to about 50% power with 10 laps still to go!!
I had to abandon any hope of catching Tim and Doni as I could only get up to 4th at the ends of the straights. Billy was a good distance behind but I was losing 6-7 seconds a lap and there was a long way to go!!
I had to use a gear lower in most corners and just try and carry as much speed as I could through every bend. With 3 laps to go I was confident that Billy would not catch me and I was able to let Tris and Lalethor lap me without hindering them, although I had been hoping not to get lapped!!

GPL has the ability to spring surprises just when you think everything is under control. So it was on my final lap. As I exited the final turn with the flag in sight.....it all went very quiet as the engine finally failed completely Shocked. I was able to coast over the line and hold my 7th spot, but if I had not been lapped by the leaders,I would have been a dead duck.

Grats to Tris and the podium and to all who raced and finished.

I'm not a strategy man with token system through the champ, so my choice was random between first five cars   Cheesy
Difficult for first 2 laps for tyre cold, then when I can push Bot was 3/4 second ahead, I tried to decrease the gap but it was too dangerous and almost kill myself  Grin Grin so keep the 2° position was the way
Thanks all and compliments Tristan for Grand Chelem

I gambled on the Eagle as I remember Clive doing alright in it many years back with the help of some tow.
My plan was simply to draft my way to a 'high' finishing spot.
It almost worked but I got swamped at the start due to the less than healthy V12 of the T1G with 2 of the 2l cars passing me by T1  Shocked

I managed to get past them over the next 2 or 3 laps and slowly reeled in Fulvio, who I then had a great chase with.
His car was faster, but I felt that if I could pass him I still had a tiny chance of drafting up to the 2nd place driver so pressed on harder and harder trying to convince him to have a momentary lapse Wink

In the end I blinked first and span at T1 - somehow I clobbered the Right rear wheel and bent my suspension.
As a result I was seriously down on rear end grip and was really struggling with the fast right handers and anything involving the throttle.
1st Andreas and then Doni passed me during my initial recovery/learning phase - I treid to fight but ended up having to slow down as the inside edge of my right rear was topping 250 degrees! (180 on the outside wacko )

Annoyed at myself but that's racing.
Well done to Tris and the podium, and also to all finishers  Smiley

A nice race :-)
I got third on the grid thanks to a almost perfect lap, for my standard, in qualy. Start was good and I was still third at T1 very close to Alessandro so I tried to press him a bit in the first laps, but when he warmed up his tires he managed to increase the gap while I had to defense myself from Axel's BRM first and then from Tim's Eagle that were bigger and bigger in my mirrors in T5. They had both some misfortune so I had a nice gap on fourth to manage and focused to take care of engine and tires and to not overbrake myself at T1. Almost managed to fail towards the end but lucky was on my side and got podium.
Grats to Tristan and Alessandro for the great pace.
