Moderator's Report

After the summer break from last season, picking up from where he left last season, John Hammonds emerged victorious across the Styrian mountains of Zeltweg. Phil Thornton picked up a fine 2nd place after a strong drive and Dave Ranier rounded up the podium with a well deserved 3rd place.

It was great to see some old faces returning for this series. Hope to see you throughout the season gentlemen,

There were two incidents reported this race; both very similar, on the same corner, one lap after another. Unfortunately one of these was on the first lap, and that meant most of the field was involved. Time to dust off the Moderator's cap.....

Server replay time: 0h00m58s

Fran Molteni makes a great start and attempts to pass Billy Nobrakes on the approach to Hella Licht. Fran brakes later than Bill, and is alongside on corner entry, on the outside. Rather than leave room, Fran squeezes Bill and though they almost get away with it, the ensuing contact pitches them both into a spin, causing a roadblock and chaos ensues behind.

Fran was perfectly entitled to challenge Bill by passing on the outside, but he should have left much more room than he did. When overtaking on the outside you are most exposed to warp or lag contact so for self preservation's sake it's always best to leave plenty of space. Fran didn't do that and Bill, and the rest of the field behind, unfortunately fell victim to this error. The drivers behind did a commendable job in trying to avoid the pair of stricken Brabhams, but first lap incidents are always tricky to avoid.

Billy Nobrakes did nothing wrong. He was a constant distance from the inside kerb throughout the incident.

The following link is a good reference for learning where a fellow racer's car is visible from your own. Note the large blindspot!
https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/overlap

A simple side by side contact on Fran's part will be applied, with an additional penalty for a first lap incident.

Server replay time: 0h03m20s

In an eerily similar manner to the first incident. After serving his stop and go penalty, Fran emerges from the pits, getting up to speed on the inside line on the approach to Hella Licht. Geoff is catching rapidly and tries to overtake on the outside, but misjudges the speed differential between the two and ends up squeezing Fran, as Fran did to Bill a lap earlier, and contact is made.

The same advice can be applied as the first incident, as well as the penalty.

Qualifying was the high point of the race, just .05 off pole. Could have been quite a race if not for the T1 incident. Will check the replay. After that I managed to recover to join the battle with Rainier & Curtis but overran & hit the barriers at Trioch twice & overcooked the engine late on.
Good to see some old faces back on the grid. I know Mike, Geoff & Jack will be much quicker once they get to grips with the 67s.
Mike T - sorry to heat you had connection issues. Sam had something similar on the Works grid, so worth posting on their race thread.

Yes this race could have been very closed between 5 or 6 racers without this T1 incident.
When I saw Francesco overtaking me before the 1st turn, I said to myself "slow down, I'm sure something bad will happen", unfortunately I couldn't avoid Billy's car.
But I was lucky as my car wasn't damaged.
After that, I was 4th and the 3 leaders were around 10-12 seconds ahead : John, Phil and Dave C.
I could close  the gap with Dave C and overtook it.
But there were still 12 - 14 seconds with Phil and John ...until I saw Phil's car.
During several laps I stayed 2-3 seconds behind Phil, when I made a big mistake trying to overtake at the wrong place Jack's BRM. I was too impatient trying to follow Phil's Brabham.
I lost lot of seconds   and Dave C. overtake me.
I could quickly take again the 3rd place.

This race was very fun from 1st to last lap. Maybe it could have been more without this T1 incident.
We'll see what the moderators will decide but once again we should repeat "Don't take too much risks in the 1st turn of the 1st lap ! We rarely could win a race in the first turn but we very often lost the race on it"

REED, MARQUE, LEARN: THE JACK O’FERRALL STORY

Zeltweg October 1st

The announcer at the new Zeltweg circuit was oddly portentous, as if bad Henry Fonda were to announce to a cheering crowd the end of democracy and the beginning of a new tyranny.  I realise that might not please everyone.  It might even have put me off, as I spent the time before the race alone, although this was also because there seemed no mention of a driver's room in the Formula One handbook.  I am not strictly a beginner despite my long and unsought separation from the track and perhaps I should have recalled the existence of one, however why miss an opportunity to place blame on a guide-writer?

The times were not good, I admit.  Perhaps not yet inspiring the commentator's get off the track before smoking kills me bad, but bad all the same.  Tom gloated afterwards. 'So, Fast O'Ferrall back among the Loot charmed circle again. At least you have just enough speed left to race, by about half a second I reckon.  If we had to pull out it would have been gay as gay Bond, if gay Bond were from Liverpool that is.'  Sometimes Tom needs his face punched.  'You're giving me that Mister Punch look again, you should blame Gerry he said he wanted some weight in the back for balance, I'd have imagined an engine would be more useful. The other missing weapon in our armoury.  However I only promote the team, I can't build and drive the car as well, if you catch my drift.  At least the American guy won, always goes down well with the crowd that counts.'

Yeah Tom, always easy to be quick with a quip. All the way with LBJ, that was marketing Vietnam, at least its contemporary.  Mister Punch would be so last century if last century happened to be the Restoration.  When you have to spend two-thirds of your race in an attempt to anticipate how to allow the pack past, there seems space for philosophy.  Just off the racing line, a more appropriate place for an engineer, you might imagine.  The only compliment paid to the H-16 was at least no-one would want to copy it, perhaps Jimmy should have stayed with it.  The will to power of the Superman is necessary to prevail over the eternal recurrence.  Faust that's German for fist, he made a pact with the devil.  Just don't be Kennedy, never eat the last part of the doughnut.  Or the strudel.  Don't eat a hotdog from trackside vendors either, even if it doesn't qualify as a philosophy.  Goodnight.

But if Billy is also the moderator how is possible a neutral judgment of the incident?

Nobody moderates their own incidents.

Dean is quite right.  Moderators do not moderate their own incidents.  There are several other moderators who can look at this incident.  Billy will not be involved.

Generally, we try & avoid a moderator having to moderate a series that he drives in. In the past we have not always had enough moderators to do this. For season 31 & 32 the 67 series mod team is me & Sam. I moderate the Works division & Sam does the Privateers. If a driver is unhappy with a moderators decision they can make an appeal.

Yes, believe it or not this is only my second attempt at 67s and I probably took the wrong car in the twitchy BT24.

I could never get heat in the front tyres and they stayed blue the whole time.
I think I'll take the more conservative Cooper for Rouen and see if I can keep it pointed the right way.
I was mainly dealing with where the car put me rather than putting it where I wanted to.

BT24 is not "the wrong car" in Zeltweg, look at the podium ...

Cooper is slow for Rouen.

Oh no, agreed. I should have said wrong car for me first time out. I hadn't had enough practise and didn't have a great set up. The BT24 is quite twitchy anyway being so short and I should have played a bit more safe.

Cooper is slow for Rouen.

It is but I need to keep pointing the right way until I get used to the cars which I'm hoping I can do in the Cooper.

I'm also missing at least 1 race so I can save some tokens for later in the season.

For me, I couldn't find very many set ups for Zeltweg. I found a good one for the Lotus and one for the Cooper. I also thought the Brabham was a little twitchy.

It should be much easier finding setups for Rouen. The Brabham will most likely be my top pick. If I have time, I'll try several cars to help me decide which one to take.

Mod report published.

To those that aren't aware please make reference to the link https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/overlap It's a great reference showing just how large the blindspots are when racing in GPL.
